Picks Faulkner For Summer Book Club
Oprah Winfrey
Talkshow host Oprah Winfrey propelled Nobel-prize winning author William Faulkner up the bestseller list on Saturday, proving again why her television book club is one of the biggest sales drivers in publishing.
Within 24 hours of being picked as the summer reading pick for Oprah's Book Club, a boxed set of the three novels "As I Lay Dying," "The Sound and the Fury" and "Light in August" was the number two seller on Amazon.com, second only to J.K. Rowling's next Harry Potter book, which hits the shelves in July.
After Winfrey picked "East of Eden" in summer 2003, the book sold more than 1.2 million copies, and last year's summer pick, "Anna Karenina," sold more than 900,000, according to Publishers Weekly figures.

A state appellate court has upheld the conviction of an ex-boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith who was found guilty of making criminal threats against the former Playboy Playmate of the Year.
A three-judge panel rejected Mark Hatten's claims that there was insufficient evidence to support his 2003 conviction.

Jurors acquitted Hatten of two other counts involving stalking and threats against Smith.

Family Fighting Over Will
Zsa Zsa Gabor
A multimillion-dollar family feud over who controls the ailing socialite Zsa Zsa Gabor's will has spilled into the courtroom.
Gabor and her ninth husband are suing her only daughter, accusing Francesca Hilton of stealing $2 million by forging her mother's signature to take out a loan on Gabor's $14 million Bel Air home.
Gabor's husband Frederic Prinz von Anhalt said Friday that Hilton took the money in March because she's worried she won't get enough when her mother dies. Hilton said he actually manipulated the 88-year-old Gabor to get into her will, and she refinanced the home with her mother's permission to protect the money.
Without holding a hearing, a judge on Friday rejected a request for immediate action on the suit and scheduled motions to be heard on June 28.

Unsigned Painting Found in Madrid
Georges de La Tour
An unsigned painting by 17th-century French master Georges de La Tour has been discovered in a Madrid mansion after hanging in offices unnoticed for decades, the director of the Prado museum said Friday.
The painting, "Saint Jerome Reading a Letter," is only the second work by La Tour known to exist in Spain, and only one of about dozen of his paintings to have been identified throughout the world.
The work, unsigned like most of La Tour's works, shows an elderly, bearded Saint Jerome with a red cloak using reading glasses to examine a letter. It contains La Tour's trademark use of a ray of light in the background to create sharp contrast.

May Be Shrinking Arctic Lakes
Permafrost
Arctic lakes are shrinking, and melting permafrost brought on by higher temperatures may be the reason, according to a research paper.
California, Alaska and New York researchers compared satellite images spanning 30 years of more than 10,000 large lakes over 200,000 square miles in Siberia. They concluded that lakes where permafrost remains frozen are growing.
But where permafrost has thinned or completely melted, lakes are shrinking or disappearing, a change that could affect habitat for migratory birds.
The research is outlined in a paper, "Disappearing Arctic Lakes," published in the journal "Science" on Friday.

In Memory
Domenic Troiano
Canadian guitarist Domenic "Donnie" Troiano died May 25 at his home in Toronto after a long fight with cancer. He was 59.
Born in Modugno, Italy, and a naturalized Canadian since 1955, Troiano was a force in Canadian music for 40 years. He came to prominence with Toronto-based Robbie Lane & the Disciples, which backed up Arkansas rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins in the early '60s.
He later performed as a guitarist with the Five Rogues, the Mandala, Bush, the James Gang (replacing Joe Walsh) and the Guess Who, as well as his own Domenic Troiano Band. He also handled music supervision for films and TV, including the CBS TV shows "Night Heat," "Diamonds" and "Hot Shots."
In demand for session work in the 1980s, Troiano appeared on recordings by Steely Dan, Diana Ross, Joe Cocker and David Clayton-Thomas. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1996.
Troiano is survived by his mother and two siblings.
