Releasing Reggae Album

Willie Nelson

Country music icon Willie Nelson is trying something a little different. Nelson, 72, will release a long-awaited reggae album, "Countryman" in July.

He shot video in Jamaica this month for a cover of Jimmy Cliff's reggae classic "The Harder They Come" and Johnny and June Carter Cash's country music classic "I'm a Worried Man."

Nelson, 72, began production on "Countryman" in 1995. The project was shelved when the country star switched labels, and revived in 2004 after he signed on with Nashville-Tenn.-based Lost Highway Records.

Sony Ordered To Pay For Slight

Meat Loaf

Sony Music was ordered to pay $5 million for not putting a Cleveland record company's logo on Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell" album.

"Today, David beat Goliath," said Cleveland record executive Steve Popovich, who hugged jurors after Friday's decision.

A former talent scout who helped Epic Records land such superstars as Michael Jackson, Boston and The Charlie Daniels Band, Popovich created Cleveland International Records in 1977 and signed singer Marvin Lee Aday - stage name Meat Loaf.

He got Epic, a CBS Records subsidiary, to release "Bat Out of Hell," which sold more than 30 million copies and was among the most popular records of all time.

Sony, which bought out CBS, paid $6.7 million to Popovich and others at the now-defunct Cleveland company in 1998 to settle a lawsuit over album royalties.

The settlement required Sony to place the Cleveland International Records logo on future Meat Loaf albums, but Sony delayed for more than a year. Sony claimed the omission was a mistake that it was later corrected.

Members Exit

The Cure

Two veteran members of the Cure have exited the U.K. rock act, which has long featured a revolving door of musicians backing leader Robert Smith.

Keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and guitarist Perry Bamonte are out, leaving singer/guitarist Smith, bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper in the fold, according to the Cure's Web site.

The Cure Web site coyly said others could be part of the lineup, promising more news soon. The new lineup will be unveiled on Aug. 5 when the Cure play a festival in Castellon, Spain. The band is also confirmed for festival dates in France, Switzerland and Turkey.

Rumors are also circulating that Siouxie and the Banshees principal Steve Severin will fill in at the Cure's upcoming shows in some capacity. Severin and Smith are longtime friends who recorded a 1983 side-project album, "Blue Sunshine," under the moniker the Glove.

Gets High Now by Working Out

Ozzy Osbourne

April 20 marked the one-year anniversary of sobriety for rock's seemingly indestructible icon, Ozzy Osbourne. Now he's found a new passion to feed his addictive personality: working out.

To get himself in shape for Ozzfest, now in its tenth year, the "Mad Man of Rock" is hitting the elliptical machine, the track and the weights instead of the bottle.

"I absolutely ... love it," Osbourne told The Associated Press, with his trademark profanity of course. "I get a normal endorphin, it's as good as any drug. I'm addicted to (that), and being yelled at by my wife."

$200K in Damages

BoDeans

The BoDeans are more than $200,000 richer. A jury awarded the rock 'n' roll group damages Thursday from a longtime former manager, Mark McCraw, for allegations including breach of contract.

McCraw's relationship with the group became strained during contract negotiations in 1996 when the band's song "Closer to Free" gained popularity as the theme for the television show "Party of Five."

Band members testified during the trial that McCraw did not fulfill his duties as manager and threatened to tie up the band in court if they did not sign the contract.

Silence Baffles Engineers

Big Ben

Big Ben, the landmark London clock renowned for its accuracy and chimes, stopped ticking for 90 minutes, an engineer said Saturday.

Officials do not know why the 147-year-old clock on the banks of the River Thames stopped at 10:07 p.m. Friday. It resumed keeping time, but stalled again at 10:20 p.m. and remained still for about 90 minutes before starting up again, a spokeswoman for the House of Commons said on condition of anonymity, citing government policy.

There has been speculation a recent spell of hot weather may have been to blame. Temperatures in London reached 90 Saturday, and forecasters called it England's hottest day in May since 1953.

In 1962, snow caused the clock to ring in the New Year 10 minutes late. In 1976, the clock stopped when a piece of its machinery broke. Big Ben also stopped on April 30, 1997, and once more three weeks later.

Rejects Mother Of Slain Soldier

Gold Star Organization

Everyone agrees that Ligaya Lagman is a Gold Star mother, part of the long line of mournful women whose sons or daughters gave their lives for their country.

Her 27-year-old son, Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lagman, was killed last year in Afghanistan when his unit came under fire during a mission to drive out remnants of Taliban and al-Qaida forces.

But the largest organization of these women, the American Gold Star Mothers Inc., has rejected Lagman, a Filipino, for membership because - though a permanent resident and a taxpayer - she is not a U.S. citizen.

"There's nothing we can do because that's what our organization says: You have to be an American citizen," national President Ann Herd said Thursday. "We can't go changing the rules every time the wind blows."

That explanation isn't satisfying the war veterans who sponsored Lagman's application, some other members of the mothers' group or several members of Congress.

For the rest, Gold Star Organization
