Purple Gene Reviews

'Born Into Brothels'

Purple Genes' review of the movie "Born Into Brothels" (2004) Directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman:

"Be thou as little children and yours is the kingdom of Heaven"! That's what Jesus said…and I've always loved this quote. But how about being a little child living in Hell? If I were a Christian, I would think long and hard about this. Being Buddhist, I don't have to think too long and hard because I think heaven and hell exist right here on earth….and for some, Hell is all there is. Take for instance the children of prostitutes living in the deplorable red-light districts of Calcutta……drugs, violence, incredible poverty and the sexual servitude of women….generation after generation with absolutely no way out……these are the children "Born Into Brothels" and condemned to live and die there!

Knowing the subject matter of this movie, I had a river of tears ready for release as I sat down in the Piedmont Cinema on Saturday afternoon. What a surprise I got…..As the movie begins, we are introduced to the eight amazing kids that helped make this film. As each childs' situation was described I fell sway to their sheer and boundless innocence and beauty….and as Zana Briski, the director, talks about why she decided to give each of these children a camera, you realize that she was not allowed into the brothels and the only way she could see IN would be through the eyes of these children and the cameras they now possessed.

This is a truly heart rending look, without judgement, into the lives of the most outcast souls in all of India….Imagine a father selling his 5 year old daughter to maintain his hashish habit……Imagine a mother forcing her daughter at 11 years old to join the "Line" which means sexually servicing men for money…….Then look at the faces of these children……still innocent and excited about the world….with their eyes in the lens of a camera shooting the scenery of their lives…..

It would be inevitable for Zana to get involved more deeply into these childrens situation. After seeing their homes and families and the utter destitution they are condemned to….she tries desperately to get them out….get them into boarding schools…and not being a well funded social worker, she raises money by having an Art showing in New York and raising interest in grant money. There is a series of scenes showing Zana going from agency to agency trying to get forms filled out for boarding school…being rejected because the kids parents are prostitutes and needing HIV testing…and then some of the parents themselves not wanting to let their kids go because they earn money by doing menial work for food….all of this frustrating and real….But when you see the photographs that come form them it is simply amazing…truly inspiring!

The end of the movie tracks the latest status of the kids ….and the little girl that I adored the most, Kuchi, was doing quite well at the boarding school…..one child ….saved maybe two…..it's a start…..

Purple Gene gives "Born Into Brothels" 10 totally happy tears out of 10 for this precious look into the lives of these precocious kids.

Hosts AIDS Awareness Concert

Nelson Mandela

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, playing host to his second AIDS awareness concert on Saturday, told a crowd of 20,000 that women bear the brunt of the AIDS pandemic that has infected some 25 million people in Africa.

The disease "carries the face of women," whether through infection or caring for those who are ill with the deadly virus, said the 86-year-old Mandela.

Mandela, who lost his eldest son to the disease earlier this year, compared the plight of women coping with AIDS to the isolation he felt when imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Islands for fighting against white racist rule.

The American actor and singer Will Smith said he agreed to a personal request from Mandela to be an ambassador for the 46664 campaign.

Reunite for Charity Show

Fugees

Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, former members of the Fugees, reunited onstage in an adrenaline-charged charity concert for tsunami victims.

An enthusiastic crowd of 15,000 people attended Friday's seven-hour "Force of Nature" show at Stadium Putra, which raised more than $2.6 million to rebuild tsunami-devastated communities in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.

Hong Kong action film star Jackie Chan sang a tender Mandarin-language love ballad. Other performers included the Backstreet Boys, Black Eyed Peas and Boyz II Men.

University of Michigan to Build

Arthur Miller Theater

The University of Michigan regents have approved the design for the 250-seat Arthur Miller Theatre, honoring the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and 1938 graduate who died last month.

The theater plan that won approval Thursday will be part of a new $42.8-million Walgreen Drama Center at the Ann Arbor school.

The center also will house the departments of theater, drama and musical theater on Michigan's north campus. It was proposed in 1997 and will open in 2007.

Miller attended Michigan during the height of the Depression and said he did so because it cost only $65 a year.

Classical Pianist Interprets

Radiohead

Fans of Radiohead take their love of the band very seriously. Classical pianist Christopher O'Riley, however, has taken his admiration further.

O'Riley has recorded two full albums of Radiohead transcriptions for solo piano. His latest CD, "Hold Me to This," will be released by Harmonia Mundi's World Village imprint April 12. The new album, which follows 2003's "True Love Waits" (released on Sony Classical Odyssey), features many of the band's B-sides and rarities.

"I'm not arranging these songs just to have arranged them," says O'Riley, who also hosts the Public Radio International syndicated show "From the Top," which showcases young classical musicians from across the United States. "I'm doing the best I can to approximate the energy of a full rock band. And that's really always been part of the conceit and the seduction of piano reductions or arrangements of any kind of music. That possible range of color, and vitality, is the same thing that drives, say, Liszt's transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies."

"Hold Me to This" isn't O'Riley's only new Radiohead project; the pianist is also publishing all the arrangements he has recorded on both of his transcription albums in a striking LP-size book (available through his Web site, christopheroriley.com).

Kravitz Gives Guitar to Brazil's Poor

Lenny Kravitz

U.S. rock star Lenny Kravitz gave a $5,000 electric guitar to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday to help him raise funds for his struggling campaign to wipe out hunger in the South American country by 2006.

The Epiphone Flying V guitar used by Kravitz on his Latin American tour will be auctioned on the Internet at www.fomezero.gov.br and proceeds will go to building water cisterns in poor regions of Brazil's northeast, state news agency Radiobras reported.

Lula has gained an international profile for his proposals to fight global hunger and his "Zero Hunger" program in Brazil.

American Idol

Elvis Presley may have left the building, but his estate is now under the same roof as "American Idol" and its "Pop Idol" siblings around the world.

Show business mogul Robert F.X. Sillerman, who gained control of Elvis Presley Enterprises in December, said Friday he has now struck a $167 million deal to buy 19 Entertainment Ltd., the British-based firm behind the "Pop Idol" television talent show craze and its hit U.S. spinoff "American Idol."

As part of the deal, 19 Entertainment founder Simon Fuller and his creative team will remain as partners in the venture with Sillerman's company, Sports Entertainment Enterprises, which does business as CKX Inc.

The purchase price includes $124.4 million in cash plus 1.87 million shares in CKX, valued at about $43 million at the midday share price of $23.05.

Goodfella Faces Drug Charge

Henry Hill

Former mobster-turned-chef Henry Hill, whose gangland experiences inspired the movie "Goodfellas," has been charged with felony drug possession.

Police said Hill's luggage was searched on Aug. 15 at the North Platte Regional Airport and methamphetamine and cocaine was found. On Friday, Lincoln County Judge Kent Florum sent him to district court on a felony charge of drug possession.

Hill, portrayed by Ray Liotta in "Goodfellas," had sought refuge in the witness protection program after agreeing to testify against his former mob bosses from New York.

However, he left the witness protection program and now lives in North Platte with his wife, who is from the area. He has been working as a chef and helping establish an Italian restaurant. Hill also wrote "The Wiseguy Cookbook," released in 2002.

Releases Tsunami Aid Record

Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)

Yusuf Islam, the pop musician known as Cat Stevens until he converted to Islam 30 years ago, was set to release a new record in aid of tsunami-orphaned children in the Indonesian province of Aceh.

The new song in response to the disaster, "Indian Ocean", features Magne Furuholmen of Norwegian group A-Ha and Neil Primrose of Britpop band Travis.

The British singer's own charity, Small Kindness, set up a regional office in Indonesia and will work on projects "to keep families together" by helping orphans in the predominantly-Muslim Aceh.

Asks Court to Dismiss Kelley Suit

Glynn Wilson

A freelance writer has asked a court to dismiss his $5 million lawsuit accusing author Kitty Kelley of plagiarism in her best-selling book about resident Bush and his family.

Glynn Wilson said Friday that he decided to drop the suit, filed in November, because he feared that U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon was about to rule that copyright law didn't cover his story on the Internet about Bush's days in Alabama when he was in the National Guard in the early 1970s.

Wilson claimed that Kelley's book, "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," lifted large parts of a story he first posted on his Web site, Southerner Daily News, in February 2003, specifically passages about Bush's drinking and drug use. Doubleday, a subsidiary of Random House, Inc., published Kelley's book last fall.

In court documents, the publisher denied plagiarizing Wilson's work and said that Wilson failed to obtain a proper copyright before putting his story on the Internet.

Heavily Redacts Clinton Papers

White House

The Bush administration blacked out almost all the information in hundreds of documents before releasing them to a conservative organization looking into President Clinton's controversial pardons four years ago on his last day in office.

The only items not deleted from the material are the names of the person who wrote the document and the person it was sent to.

The government accountability group Judicial Watch said Friday that it received the Justice Department documents following a court battle that featured a Republican administration fighting to keep secret documents generated by its Democratic predecessor.

The Bush White House has argued that releasing pardon-related documents would have a chilling effect on internal discussions leading up to presidential action on such requests.

In Memory

Philip Lamantia

Philip Lamantia, who befriended Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac as a young man and was one of the founding Beat generation poets, died of heart failure at his home March 7, his publisher announced. He was 77.

Lamantia and four other poets gave a legendary reading at the Sixth Gallery in San Francisco that is widely considered the launch of the Beat generation. But he later largely avoided the celebrated literary movement.

Lamantia was just 16 when his first work appeared in a respected literary magazine.

Despite his early start, Lamantia never gained wide recognition. From the mid-1950s, he suffered from drug dependence and periodic depression.

He also shied away from public attention and traveled extensively, at one point living with the Cora Indian tribe in Nayarit, where he experimented with peyote.

Lamantia was fascinated by linguistics, mysticism and obscure religious texts. He wrote a number of books of poetry, beginning with "Erotic" (1949), which he referred to as one of his "adventures in pure psychic automatism."

Lamantia married Nancy Peters, co-publisher of City Lights Books, in 1978. He lectured on poetry at San Francisco State University and San Francisco Art Institute through the 1970s.
