But Untrue
Strangely Believable
As he crossed the Iraq-Kuwait border with the 7th Cavalry during the first hours of the invasion, General Tommy Franks declared enthusiastically, "We've caught them napping, boys!"

Harold Meyerson: More seniors soon may face the Other America
Once upon a time, in a land that stretched from one great sea to another, half the elderly were poor. When their work life was done, they retreated into their rented room, or their children's home, or even the county poorhouse. Their rulers looked at their plight and concluded that "at least one-half of the aged -- approximately 8 million people -- cannot afford today decent housing, proper nutrition, adequate medical care ... or necessary recreation." And the name of this nation, and the unimaginably distant time when half the elderly lived this way? The United States of America in the year 1960.
Paul Krugman: Worse Than Fiction
(Click on "Columns", then on "Worse Than Fiction")
I've been thinking of writing a political novel. It will be a bad novel because there won't be any nuance: the villains won't just espouse an ideology I disagree with - they'll be hypocrites, cranks and scoundrels. In my bad novel, a famous moralist who demanded national outrage over an affair and writes best-selling books about virtue will turn out to be hiding an expensive gambling habit. A talk radio host who advocates harsh penalties for drug violators will turn out to be hiding his own drug addiction.

Barbara Boxer: Why I Must Object
The senator explains why she felt compelled to object to the certification of Ohio's electoral votes.
In the Clearing Stands a Boxer... a letter from Michael Moore
Dear Friends, Something historic happened [recently]. For the first time since 1877 a member of the House and a member of the Senate stood up together to object to a state's electoral college votes.

Uninjured in Daytona Car Fire
Paul Newman
Academy Award-winning actor Paul Newman escaped injury Saturday when the race car he was testing caught fire following a spin at Daytona International Speedway.
Newman was driving a Daytona Prototype sports car for next month's Rolex 24 when he spun on the road course, said Adam Saal, Grand American Series spokesman. The car didn't hit anything, but when Newman tried to restart the engine it caught fire.
The fire was contained to the engine compartment, and Newman escaped without harm. He was taken to the track's infield medical center and released after a brief exam.

Turns Sight to Battling AIDS
Nadine Gordimer
South African writer Nadine Gordimer, 81, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991, is noted for her novels and short stories about the inhumanity of apartheid. Several were once banned in her own country. Gordimer was in New York recently to talk about her latest project, Telling Tales. It is a compilation of 21 short stories "that capture the range of emotions and situations of our human universe," she writes in the book's introduction. The stories are by world-renowned authors - five Nobel prize winners including Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Gunter Grass, and writers who will likely be on the shortlist for future Nobel literature prizes.
The story collection, published by Picador Press, was put together to raise money to battle AIDS.
Only a year ago, Gordimer wrote to writer friends and others whom she didn't know but whose stories she admired with the idea of putting together an anthology of short fiction.
"I thought if they (musicians) could get up and sing," to raise money to battle AIDS, "we (writers) could sit down and write."

Soupy Sales
Comedian Soupy Sales has been honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
Sales, seated in a wheelchair, said "I appreciate this from the bottom of my heart and I appreciate you all coming here in the rain."
The rain forced the ceremony to be held inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, with Hollywood's honorary mayor, Johnny Grant, setting up the 79-year-old comic's classic schtick.
The star was number 2274 on the famous walkway. Celebrities attending included actor Peter Marshall and actress Nancy Allen.

Settlement in Mandolin Fight
Bill Monroe
The son of bluegrass music pioneer Bill Monroe and a Kentucky foundation - fighting over ownership of the legend's prized mandolin - reached a settlement Friday, just days before a trial was to have opened in the dispute.
Terms of the settlement were not immediately available. Monroe's 1923 Gibson F5 mandolin - bought from a Miami barbershop for $150 in 1943 and considered a key to his stylistic development - has remained in a locked vault during the dispute.
Monroe played his prized mandolin for more than 50 years, the last time on March 15, 1996, at the Grand Ole Opry. He suffered a stroke the next day and died later that year.

Judge Tosses Suit Vs. Fox News
Ramseys
A federal judge has tossed out a lawsuit filed by the parents of JonBenet Ramsey against Fox News Channel, saying a network report unfavorable to the couple was not defamatory.
Judge Phillip Figa suggested that John and Patsy Ramsey seek vindication "in the court of public opinion."
In a ruling made public Friday, Figa said litigation in defamation cases could chill constitutionally protected free speech rights and because of that, the facts in such cases must be established with "convincing clarity."
He said the Ramseys failed to meet that standard. He said the case cannot be refiled.

Dropped By Syndicator
Armstrong Williams
Armstrong Williams, one of the nation's leading black conservative voices, has acknowledged that a company he runs was paid $240,000 by the Education Department, and he called criticism of his relationship with the department "legitimate."
Tribune Media Services said it told Williams on Friday that it was halting distribution of his weekly newspaper column.
The National Association of Black Journalists expressed disappointment in Williams, who is not a member of the group.
"I thought we in the media were supposed to be watchdogs, not lapdogs," said NABJ Vice President-Print Bryan Monroe, assistant vice president-news at Knight Ridder. "I thought we had an administration headed by a president who took an oath to uphold the First Amendment, not try to rent it."

Swift Rise of Society
Hawaii
The transformation of ancient Hawaii from a loose collection of chiefdoms into the beginnings of a formal society may have happened in as little as 30 years, according to new evidence from 400-year-old temples.
Researchers employed an unusual technique to test the age of eight temples on the islands of Maui and Molokai and found that all were apparently built from about 1565 to 1638.
Anthropologists had previously believed the temples - which served as religious and economic centers - were built over a period of 250 years.

Extra-Terrestrial and UFO Contacts
India
New Delhi is in the middle of a big secret internal debate. On one side the largest democracy of the world is eager to explain to its citizens and to the world about the ongoing contacts with the UFOs and extra-terrestrials. On the other hand there are invisible untold international protocols that prohibit doing anything that may cause worldwide fear and panic.
It is well accepted between the UFO and extra-terrestrial experts that all the five nuclear powers are in contact with the beings from other stars for quite some time. Recently India has seen enormous news on UFO contacts and secret UFO bases in Himalayas near the Chinese bases. In Ladak, for example the locals clearly point out the everyday phenomenon of large triangular spacecrafts coming out below the ground and Indian security forces protecting them.
According to sources close to the Government, the UFO contacts is known by quite a few politicians in the opposition and of course by those who are in power.
