The Pentagon is paying for propaganda in local Iraqi media, wow! What a
surprise, Donald Rumsfeld's boys and girls are planting stories. Because
it's all going so well in Iraq.
The second biggest attack ever. More dead, more dissent. Whose side
are you on in terms of withdrawal? Do Democrats need to agree?
And the death penalty, more and more heartily disliked in the United States.
Shall we abolish it altogether? What alternatives will work?
Immigration, the 900 pound political issue - what is fair and right and safe -

Re: Cream On PBS
Marty,
My sister called me from Oklahoma to tell me about the Cream reunion show and to make sure I watched it....except, here in ewe-gene oregon, OPB showed the Grateful Dead movie instead. No surprise, that. (Eugene was and still is a major Deadhead enclave) Still, it's a reminder that what shows on one person's PBS station isn't always the same as another's.
When checking the OPB website to see when they will be showing the Cream concert, I found it has something it calls "DTV" (digital television) which is different than just plain TV, with a different showing schedule. If you have "DTV", you can see replays of the Cream concert all week, but if you only have plain TV, you're SOL until 10 pm Sat. or 3am Mon.
I don't know why and haven't a clue what the difference is, but it's annoying to say the least.

Thanks, ducks!
KOCE, PBS for behind the Orange Curtain, has aired the Grateful Dead movie the last 2 Saturday nights, but have yet to air the 'Cream' special. Go figure.

Earns Letterman Big Audience
Oprah Winfrey
David Letterman has learned the Power of Oprah: her "Late Show" appearance Thursday earned him his biggest audience in more than a decade.
An estimated 13.5 million people stayed up late to watch Winfrey's first visit to Letterman in 16 years, Nielsen Media Research said on Friday. Only three times has Letterman had a bigger audience on CBS - for his network premiere in 1993 and twice in 1994 in the midst of the Nancy Kerrigan- Tonya Harding ice skating melodrama.
Winfrey's appearance more than tripled Letterman's typical audience of 4.3 million viewers, Nielsen said.
"Late Late Show" host Craig Ferguson basked in Letterman's glow. His show, which directly follows Letterman, had its biggest audience ever early Friday, Nielsen said.

'Al in the Family'
Al Sharpton
He has led civil rights marches, scolded the nation's leaders and even run for president, but the Rev. Al Sharpton now wants to do something completely different -- star in his own television sitcom.
Sharpton, in an interview with Reuters on Friday, confirmed a report in Daily Variety that he would soon be filming a pilot for a family show called "Al in the Family" that would revolve around his larger-than-life personality.
"I don't know if I am a good actor or not but I will be playing myself and I have been practicing that for 51 years," the New York Democrat and civil rights leader said.
A pilot episode for a series would be produced early next year by Paramount Network Television for CBS. Both are units of Viacom Inc.

Hospital News
Wendy Wasserstein
Renowned playwright Wendy Wasserstein, whose new play Third is currently playing Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, is battling leukemia in a Manhattan hospital.
The New York Daily News reports that Wasserstein's condition is especially grave because of an infection that is preventing doctors from administering chemotherapy. A source close to the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright told the New York daily, "There's a percentage chance of survival, and our hope is that she can fight this off. But it's very serious. . . . Wendy had been sick for a long time, but she's a private person and kept it quiet. But during rehearsals [for Third] she needed a cane some days."
Wasserstein, 55, is mother to a six-year-old daughter. She also helped create an outreach program for Theatre Development Fund to foster a new generation of theatregoers from the city's public schools.

Swiss Bank Buys Legendary Violin
'Guarneri del Gesu'
A Swiss bank said it had bought one of the world's most renowned and prized 18th century violins, which will be played by the young French virtuoso Renaud Capucon.
The "Guarneri del Gesu" violin made in 1737 was played by the legendary Isaac Stern for half a century until the 1990s, the bank, BSI, said.
The bank said the violin was in flawless condition, characterised by its distinctive "strength of tone". It did not reveal the value of the instrument.

A rap mogul known for his gangster persona and for producing chart-topping acts under the Murder Inc. label was acquitted Friday of federal charges alleging he laundered drug money for a notorious crack kingpin.
Irving Lorenzo and his brother Christopher were found not guilty of money laundering at a trial closely followed by some of the music industry's biggest stars.
In the courtroom, supporters of Lorenzo, who goes by the name Irv Gotti, included Jay-Z, Fat Joe and Russell Simmons, along with Ja Rule and Ashanti, platinum-selling artists signed by Murder Inc. Ja Rule had labeled the case "a war against hip hop."

May Have Probation Revoked
Tom Sizemore
Prosecutors said Tom Sizemore violated his probation after traces of amphetamines were found in his urine, but a judge on Friday opted not to send the actor back to jail.
On Friday, prosecutors asked that Sizemore's probation again be revoked because of the positive drug test. His lawyers countered that test results were tainted because of medication being prescribed by Sizemore's doctor.
Superior Court Judge T.K. Herman set a Jan. 13 hearing to determine if Sizemore's probation should be revoked again and asked his lawyers to provide more information about the prescription drug and whether an alternative can be used.

Raising Rates
Cable Companies
Industry leader Comcast Corp. is raising the rate on its most popular cable package by an average of 6 percent next year in all markets, while No. 2 Time Warner Cable customers are being asked to pay an average 3.1 percent more for its expanded basic package and 1.9 percent more for its limited basic plan.
The cost for Philadelphia-based Comcast's expanded basic package will rise to an average of about $47.70 as early as Jan. 1, the company said Thursday. Nearly all the company's 21.4 million cable subscribers nationwide will see an increase, since the expanded basic plan is the building block upon which digital services are added.
Major cable operators, however, aren't increasing prices for their high-speed Internet and phone services - in part due to competition from phone companies and the desire to build those businesses.

Defends Atavistic Decision
Vatican
The Vatican on Friday defended its decision to exclude Brazilian singer Daniela Mercury from its Christmas concert, saying she had threatened to promote the use of condoms to fight AIDS during the show.
Mercury, who is an ambassador for UNICEF and the U.N. anti-AIDS program, had been invited to sing several songs as part of an international cast that includes South African singer Miriam Makeba and Ireland's Dolores O'Riordan.
Mercury said in a statement last week that she regretted the decision but had the right to disagree with the Catholic Church's opposition to using contraceptives as a way of stopping the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Admits Liability In Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Disney
The Walt Disney Co. has admitted liability in the death of a 22-year-old man who was crushed on a roller coaster at Disneyland in 2003, the company and the victim's family said on Friday.
Disney agreed to admit that the death of Marcelo Torres was caused by maintenance and mechanical failures on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as a condition of the settlement of the wrongful death lawsuit brought by his family.
The public admission of liability was unusual for Disney, which is known for aggressively defending itself against lawsuits over theme park accidents.
Terms of the settlement were confidential but Torres' parents announced the establishment of an arts scholarship at Brooks College, from which Torres graduated.

Brazil Opens Exhibition
Carmen Miranda
Carmen Miranda is back and fighting to get her slice of the icon pie in her native Brazil, where memories have faded of the late bombshell known for her trademark fruit headdress.
In marking the 50th anniversary of Miranda's death this week, the Modern Art Museum is hosting "Carmen Miranda Forever," an exhibition honoring the Hollywood star that introduced Brazil and outrageous turbans to moviegoers everywhere.
While Miranda was adored here - more than 500,000 packed Rio streets during her funeral procession in 1955 - exhibit curator Fabiano Canosa said the South American country's devotion pales in relation to her success in the United States, where she starred in films such as "Copacabana" and "That Night in Rio."

CBS Tries To Lure
Katie Couric
CBS is trying to change the face of network news by luring Katie Couric, co-host of NBC's top-rated morning show "Today," to the evening news anchor seat vacated by Dan Rather, the Los Angeles Times said on Friday.
Citing senior editorial staffers at both networks, the Times said newly installed CBS News President Sean McManus had determinedly wooed Couric in recent weeks to take over as permanent anchor of the CBS Evening News and that Couric was seriously considering such a move.
Couric, who turns 49 next month, has been co-anchor of "Today" since 1991, including the show's decade-long reign at No. 1 that has made the program one of the most important assets at NBC, a unit of General Electric Co .
