This Weekend

Erin Hart

June 25th & 26th 2005 on 710 KIRO

Pride and Prejudice (Gay Pride and Karl Rove's Prejudice) on the Erin Hart show, from 9 p. to 1 a. Saturday and Sunday night on 710 KIRO.

Special Saturday guests include: Michael Macafoose of Action NW and Jon Wartes of Parents of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). Don't MISS this counter "demonstration" to Dr. James Dobson's shameless piggy-backing. (Okay, I COULD make a joke, but I won't)

Then we will dive into the rank and utterly disgusting speech Karl Rove gave in NEW YORK CITY to deafening silence about the "difference" between the reaction of conservatives and liberals to 9.11.05. If you haven't heard it (and NOOOOO, of course it wasn't beat to death as Dick Durbin's comments were) prepare to be enraged.

Lots of fun events coming up. And do check in with erinhartshow.com and 710kiro.com for more late breaking information.

Early heads up: Erin Hart is filling in again for Jay Marvin on Air America in Boulder, CO on July 5th from 4am to 9 am (pdt).

Open E-mail to Republicans Politicians

from Bruce

I just sent this e-mail to my two Ohio Senators: Mike Dewine and George Voinovich. Perhaps BCE readers will want to copy and send it to their Republican politicians.

Does Karl Rove speak for you?

The New York Times reports Rove as saying: "Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 in the attacks and prepared for war; liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers ... Has there ever been a more revealing moment this year? Let me just put this in fairly simple terms: Al Jazeera now broadcasts the words of Senator Durbin to the Mideast, certainly putting our troops in greater danger. No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals."

As Atrios says, "For the record, my motives aren't to get more troops killed. If those were my motives I'd ship them off to a war on false pretenses without sufficient equipment to keep them safe."

To me, shipping "them off to a war on false pretenses without sufficient equipment to keep them safe" is a good way to get more than 1700 brave American troops killed.

Bruce

MasterCard admitted last week that stolen personal data may put 40 million credit card holders at financial risk...

Mary's Simple Credit Plan
Mary had a simple plan
Her credit score to grow;
She wouldn't run up excess debt
And never too much owe.

She'd learned 'bout plastic's dangers
From a course she took in school;
When it came to prudent spending
Mary was nobody's fool.

Then a hacker stole her ID,
For his sins she must atone;
Mary's credit is in limbo
'Cause she's got a shopping clone.

Once upon a time, Washington really seemed to care about environmental protection. Now, environmental issues are finessed rather than addressed. How very foolish...

Bush Environmentalism

We have this great new way to meet the challenge of pollution,
It's a market-friendly, business-loving, faith-based full solution;
When environmental moaners say "Protect it or restore it,"
We just answer "Can't afford it," then proceed to just ignore it.

'Bout greenhouse gas we reckon there's not really much to fear,
If folks would stop obsessing it would surely disappear;
Melting icecaps that cause problems for a present shoreline native,
Will create new inland beach fronts when swelled oceans get creative.

Ozone holes and fished out oceans, mercury in food and air?
Kindly spare us the details, for in truth we do not care;
Drill the Arctic, log old forests, let our western parks get seedy?
It's utilities and drillers and tree loggers we find needy.

We dodge most green concerns today, at this we're most proficient,
And we're skilled in ways that render useful programs less efficient;
Trim some budgets, stall enforcement, from hard choices deftly scurry,
Plant a cherry tree on Earth Day, do some p.r., what's to worry?

Purple Gene Reviews

'Batman Begins'

Purple Gene's review of the movie "Batman Begins" (2005) Directed by Christopher Nolan ("Memento" - "Insomnia"):

I normally don't like comic book movies (Although I loved "Sin City") and I'm not normally enamored by big blockbuster summer releases. But it was Friday and I wanted to see a movie with my Son for late Fathers day so we decided to drive down to the good old Grand Lake (Grand Lake Theater Marquee said "What about Downing St. Memos Mr. Bush"!) to see the brand new version of Mister "Mormoops" (Bat Genus) or "Batman Begins"!!!

I had heard that Ebert & Roeper gave "Batman Begins" 2 thumbs "way up"…and the Chronicles Mick LaSalle echoed E&Rs sentiments verbatim. When my son and I sat down in the 3rd row armed with popcorn and fruit punch, the steroid enhanced soundtrack proceeded to pin us to our seats…….Little Bruce Wayne (Gus Lewis) falls down a well hole on his wealthy family estate. His friend Rachel Dawes (Emma Lockhart) runs off to get help….while laying at the dank and dark bottom, Bruce becomes traumatized when a horde of bats come flying out of a deep crevice…..Bruce's parents take him to the opera (Die Flëdermaus - The Bat) and poor Bruce gets scared and wants to leave early…..so his parents take him out the side door where a thug ends up robbing and killing Mr. and Mrs. Wayne…..poor Bruce is devastated………

14 years later we find an adult and very vengeful Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale - "American Psycho" - "Laurel Canyon" - "The Machinist") in an Eastern prison kicking bad guys asses for fun and education. Along comes Earle (Rutger Hauer - "Blade Runner" - "Omega Doom" - "Salem's Lot") who delivers Bruce into the highest mountains to a secret Ninja Cult headed by the mysterious Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe - "Tampopo" - "Kizuna" - "The Last Samurai") they teach him the martial arts and how to become a mystical mercenary…..after learning how to kick ass, he finds that he has other motives like truth and honor…so he burns down the monastery and escapes back to his home town - Gotham City…….

Gotham City has been taken over by Crime bosses and thugs and so Bruce Wayne returns to the family mansion where Alfred the old family butler (Michael Caine - "Alfie" - "Blame it on Rio" - "Jaws 4 the Revenge" - "Bewitched") aids him in finding an underground hide-out and a good front (like the "Scarlet Pimpernel) as a handsome rich playboy……little does Gotham City know that Brucy has a secret side….so he employs the aid of the company scientist Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman - "Pawnbroker" - "Driving Miss Daisy" - "Million Dollar Baby") to outfit with a new car (the coolest batmobile ever), a new costume (black bat suit - with ears) a new "Come-along" (a devise for him to jump across tall buildings) and a cool new cave (full of bats)…

Remember Bruce's childhood friend who watched him fall down the bat infested hole??? Well she's grown up too…..she's now Rachel Dawes the crime fighting assistant D.A. (Katie Holmes - "Dawson's Creek" - "Phone Booth" - "Pieces of April" - Soon to be Mrs. "I'll join your CULT" Tom Cruise) who is, of course being threatened by the bad guys.

Well there's no Joker, no Riddler, no Cat Woman nor is there a Robin…but we have Dr. Jonathon "the Scare Crow" Crane (Cillian Murphy) who is trying to poison the water supply of Gotham City with "Bad Acid" ……when he doses Rachel, she start seeing Dr "J"s face become a maggot infested gunney sack….yuck….So…..Batman to the rescue……….

He's gonna save the girl and the whole damn city…………James Bond meets Superman and it takes almost 2 and ½ hours…….

Purple Gene gives "Batman Begins" 8 highly explosive car crashes out of 10 and Christian Bale is the best Batman so far….But what in the hell does Tom Cruise see in Katie Holmes????? (or Her in Him)!

Gets Star on Hollywood Walk O'Fame

Roger Ebert

Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert isn't a movie star but he critiques them on TV - so memorably that on Thursday he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

A crowd of family, friends and fans cheered as Ebert's star was unveiled in front of Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre. Attendees included director Werner Herzog, actress Virginia Madsen and actor Tony Danza.

Ebert, who began his journalism career as a 15-year-old sports writer for The (Champaign, Ill.) News-Gazette, was named the Chicago Sun-Times film critic six months after joining the paper in 1966. In 1975, he became the first film critic to receive a Pulitzer for arts criticism.

Lends Support to Mentoring Group

Alicia Keys

By the time Alicia Keys was 17, she was already an accomplished pianist and singer with a recording contract. But even with all of her talents, Keys says she could have benefited from some mentoring - "to have a place that you can go to, for people to reach out to you and say, `Here's how I did it, or here's what I think.'"

Keys, 24, is providing some of the items for an online auction to benefit the Florida-based mentoring group Frum Tha Ground Up, including VIP passes to her performance at the upcoming Essence Music Festival in New Orleans and a chance to be her guest while she tapes her "Unplugged" album next month. Bidding ends June 30.

Other items up for bid at the online auction, featured on www.charityfolks.com, include lunch with Halle Berry on the set of "X-Men 3" and a private tennis lesson with Andre Agassi.

Some Voters Called Wrong Number

Dancing With the Stars

An apparent phone number mix-up has voters for an ABC reality show calling a central Michigan answering service instead. Fans of "Dancing with the Stars" were mistakenly calling a toll-free 888 number to vote for the dance team lead by actor John O'Hurley, known for his role as J. Peterman on the sitcom "Seinfeld."

The phone number to vote for his team was an 866 number, according to ABC's Web site.

Kathy Klein, owner of Mt. Pleasant Answering Service, said she was getting 200 to 300 mistaken calls on Wednesdays, when the show airs.

"You can tell when the show ends at every time zone because the phones ring off the hook at the top of every hour," she said.

Estate Wins 'Cybersquatting' Case

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The literary estate of French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery on Friday won a cybersquatting case to evict a Virgin Islands operator whose Web Site sells memorabilia linked to the creator of "The Little Prince."

Arbitrators ruled La Societe Civile pour l'Oeuvre et la Memoire d'Antoine de Saint Exupery-Succession Saint Exupery, set up by relatives to manage his literary estate, had proved The Holding Company had no right to three disputed domain names.

The Holding Company, which registered the domain names, had used a "valid, registered trademark in a commercial context, i.e. with the intent to generate commissions on sales of books and other memorabilia concerning Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This does not constitute bona fide use," the ruling said.

Saint-Exupery, a pilot whose fable "The Little Prince" is considered a classic of flight, love and loneliness, disappeared in July 1944 during a wartime aerial reconnaissance mission.

Museum Acquires Stamp Album

John Lennon

Beatles star John Lennon collected stamps as a schoolboy - and the public will soon have a chance to see them. The Smithsonian's National Postal Museum announced Friday it has acquired Lennon's stamp album and plans to display it in October.

The museum said the album contains more than 550 stamps from around the world, including many from former British colonies such as India and New Zealand.

The collection did not focus on stamps featuring music, but it may have indicated some artistic interest on Lennon's part. The album's title page had images of British monarchs, to which beards and mustaches had been added in blue ink.

Lost Love Poem Published

Sappho

A love poem written 2,600 years ago by Sappho, the greatest female poet of ancient Greece, was published on Friday for the first time since it was rediscovered last year.

Her works once filled nine volumes and the ancients called her the "tenth muse," but little has survived to modern times.

The 12-line poem, only the fourth to have been recovered, was found on papyrus wrapped around an Egyptian mummy. It was published with an English translation in the Times Literary Supplement.

Justice Statues Disrobe

Spirit of Justice

With barely a word about it, workers at the Justice Department Friday removed the blue drapes that have famously covered two scantily clad statues for the past 3 1/2 years.

Spirit of Justice, with her one breast exposed and her arms raised, and the bare-chested male Majesty of Law basked in the late afternoon light of Justice's ceremonial Great Hall.

The drapes, installed in 2002 at a cost of $8,000, allowed then-Attorney General John Ashcroft (R - Religiously Insane) to speak in the Great Hall without fear of a breast showing up behind him in television or newspaper pictures. They also provoked jokes about and criticism of the deeply religious Ashcroft.

White House Spins Spinmeister's Lies

KKKarl Rove

Responding to criticism of remarks made by Karl 'Turdblossom' Rove (R - Goebbel's Atwater's Protege), the White House on Friday said the president's political strategist was attacking a liberal organization and filmmaker Michael Moore when he said liberals responded weakly to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Ken Mehlman (R - Manly Man), chairman of the Republican National Committee, said on Thursday, "It's outrageous that the same Democrats who stood by Dick Durbin's libeling of our military are now expressing faux outrage over Karl Rove's statement of historical fact."

White House counselor Dan Bartlett told Fox "News" on Friday that Rove's criticism was specifically directed at Moveon.org and Moore, and that "he wasn't pointing out Democrat Clinton or Democrat Schumer or the other folks who came out with the outrage."

Cruise Clashes With Lauer

'Today' Show

High school drop-out Tom Cruise criticized NBC "Today" show host Matt Lauer on Friday when Lauer mentioned Cruise's earlier criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants. Cruise told Lauer he didn't know what he was talking about. "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do," Cruise said.

The interview became more heated when Lauer, who said he knew people who had been helped by the attention-deficit disorder drug Ritalin, asked Cruise about the effects of the drug.

"Matt, Matt, you don't even - you're glib," Cruise responded. "You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done."

When asked if he could be with someone at this stage in his life who doesn't have an interest in the Church of Scientology - girlfriend Katie Holmes has said she's embracing the religion - Cruise told Lauer: "Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist."

In Memory

Shana Alexander

Trailblazing journalist Shana Alexander, whose verbal skirmishes with conservative James J. Kilpatrick on CBS' "60 Minutes" were spoofed in a "Saturday Night Live" skit, has died of cancer. She was 79.

Alexander wrote for magazines including Newsweek and National Geographic and was the first female staff writer employed by Life magazine. She was also the first female editor at McCall's magazine.

But Alexander was best known for her "Point-Counterpoint" segments with Kilpatrick at the end of each "60 Minutes" broadcast in the late 1970s.

Alexander reported on some of the biggest news stories of her time, including the early days of the women's rights movement, President Nixon's handling of the Vietnam War and the slaying of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany.
