RENÉE DOWNING: You think conservatives don't trust the media? Ask a liberal how she feels (tucsonweekly.com)
(And why do most journalists lean left? Is it a vast conspiracy? No. It's for the same reason that most college professors do. Most journalists, like most professors, are a) smart, b) reasonably well-educated and c) not rich. You don't have to be ignorant and stupid to be poor or middle-class and Republican these days, but it helps.)
RENÉE DOWNING: Getting my cultural bearings at the bookstore... (tucsonweekly.com)
From the looks of it, kids are reading. Right there on the premises, two little girls were curled up in one corner, so intent on their books that you could feel their concentration. (I found myself whispering to the clerk.) Barnes & Noble may be a big, heartless corporate chain, but they let kids use their stores as libraries. That's nice.

Just a couple of weeks before turning 90, actress Olivia de Havilland has returned to bask in Hollywood glory.
And her latest close-up -- at a tribute to her work by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday night -- was a roaring success. She had an audience of film industry movers and shakers leaping to their feet to applaud the screen legend and her tales of a long-lost Hollywood.
De Havilland, a luminous beauty who won hearts as Melanie in "Gone with the Wind" and two Oscars for tragic turns in "To Each His Own" and "The Heiress," made her entrance walking briskly down the aisle of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Monty Python star John Cleese has been ordered to abandon his infamous 'silly walk' over fears it will jeopardise his recent hip replacement. The British funnyman, who used the skit on a number of Python shows, blames his outrageous pedestrian routine for forcing him into the operating theatre in the first place.
The 66-year-old says, "I can't do it because I've had a hip replacement - probably because I did so much of it. "I don't know how I even managed in the first place."

Croatia has an unorthodox way of motivating its players for their crucial World Cup match against Japan.
Rock band Deep Purple will be holding a concert under the windows of the team's hotel on Friday and officials say players are welcome to attend. Anything to lift them after an unlucky opening 1-0 defeat to champion Brazil.
A special zone has been set up for Croatian players who want to attend the band's "Rapture of the Deep" tour, which will be held outdoors, about 100 yards from the team's hotel.
Billie Piper is quitting Doctor Who, it has been announced.
The actress will bow out as the Timelord's feisty sidekick Rose Tyler at the end of the current series.
The 23-year-old has starred alongside Doctors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant in the hit BBC1 show written by Russell T Davies.
The writer promised a "stunning exit" for Piper in the final episode, which is called Doomsday and will see Rose and the Doctor battling against a huge invasion set to destroy the Earth.
Greg Kinnear is a new father. His wife, Helen, gave birth to their second daughter this week in Los Angeles, the actor's publicist said Friday.
Audrey Mae Kinnear was born Tuesday, Kinnear's representative, Matt Lubov, told The Associated Press. Their first child, Lily Kathryn, was born in 2003.

A grand jury declined Friday to indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney in connection with a confrontation in which she admitted hitting a police officer who tried to stop her from entering a House office building.
The grand jury had been considering the case since shortly after the March 29 incident, which has led to much discussion on Capitol Hill about race and the conduct of lawmakers and the officers who protect them.
"We respect the decision of the grand jury in this difficult matter," said U.S. Attorney Kenneth Wainstein.
A clearly annoyed Manhattan judge issued an arrest warrant Friday for Boy George after the former Culture Club singer failed to appear in court to explain why he wants to change his sentence for falsely reporting a burglary.
Judge Anthony Ferrara also ridiculed the singer's suggestions for serving community service, which included a proposal to hold a fashion-and-makeup workshop. But he said he would not order an arrest until a June 26 hearing on whether Boy George violated the terms of his sentence.
Under his plea deal, O'Dowd was to enter a drug-treatment program in England and do five days of community service in Manhattan. He was also fined $1,000.
But the judge angrily complained that O'Dowd had not paid the fine and had never reported to the office that assigns community service work.

David Gest, the former husband of Liza Minnelli, has been sued by a former employee who claims he was sexually harassed.
Charles R. Beyer of Lakeland claims in a federal court lawsuit that he was harassed and humiliated by Gest while working as his personal assistant last July.
"David A. Gest made sexual comments, touched plaintiff in a sexual nature, wrote sexual comments in plaintiff's calendar, paid another employee to touch plaintiff," Beyer, 35, wrote in a complaint he filed himself.
Gest's attorney, Edward Bearman, said his client tried to do Beyer a favor by giving him a temporary job that lasted only nine weeks.

Italy unveiled on Friday a new archaeological site that some experts say houses the oldest paintings in the history of Western civilization.
Italy's culture minister took reporters to an unremarkable field outside Rome under which they were shown a room carved into the hillside, decorated with colorful frescoes which archaeologists said were 2,700 years old.
Authorities were led to the spot -- in an area known for its remains from the Etruscan civilization that thrived in Italy before the Roman Empire -- by an 82-year-old Austrian tour guide who police were questioning for looting ancient artifacts.
Archaeologists were amazed at what they found once the earth was removed -- a large, square room, with niches that would once have stored cremated remains, remnants of a bright red painted ceiling and colored frescoes of birds and roaring lions.
Singer Rufus Wainwright's idea to perfectly re-create Judy Garland's legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concert was audacious, brilliant and so utterly simple that it's a wonder no one thought of it until now.
Garland's iconic show, immortalized on a classic recording, is a touchstone of gay culture, leading to fears that this attempt to celebrate it would turn into an exercise in camp.
Performing all 26 numbers plus a two-song encore, Wainwright delivered an impassioned and moving performance that was more homage than stunt.
