William Rivers Pitt: 'No One Could Have Anticipated ...' (truthout.org)
The video is gut-wrenching. There they sit, a whole room full of hurricane experts and disaster managers, shouting down a telephone line at George W. Bush, warning him a full day ahead of time that Hurricane Katrina is a catastrophe waiting to happen. There stands Max Mayfield, Director of the National Hurricane Center, emphatically explaining that Katrina is far larger and more dangerous than Hurricane Andrew, that the levees in New Orleans are in grave danger of being overtopped, and that the loss of life could be extreme.

"'This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb' is the name of a band out of Pensacola, Fla.," said Hogan. "The sticker was actually a promotional item for that entity."

Pete Seeger will have an extra gift when he celebrates his birthday this spring: a new album by Bruce Springsteen that was inspired by the folk music legend.
"We Shall Overcome/The Seeger Sessions" is scheduled for release April 25, Columbia Records announced Thursday. Seeger, the dean of American folk singers, turns 87 on May 3.
The rocker said it shouldn't come as a surprise that he chose folk music for his first album of cover songs. Much of his own writing, he said, "comes straight out of the folk tradition."
Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal and Frances McDormand are among those expected to step out of green vehicles and onto the red carpet at the Academy Award ceremony Sunday.
In all, 25 VIPs are participating in the fourth annual "Red Carpet, Green Cars" event sponsored by Toyota Motor Corp. and the environmental organization Global Green USA. McDormand, Phoenix, Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Aniston and George Clooney are all expected to arrive at the Oscars in Toyota or Lexus hybrids, including the Toyota Prius, Lexus RX crossover and a hybrid version of the Toyota Camry, which goes on sale in May.
Other automakers are also getting into the act. Ford Motor Co. said Cathy Schulman, the producer of best-picture nominee "Crash," plans to arrive in a hybrid Mercury Mariner, while best-supporting-actor nominee Gyllenhaal's entourage is scheduled to show up in a Ford Excursion powered by clean-burning biodiesel.

The spell is broken. The witches on "Charmed" won't be making the move when the WB network combines forces with UPN to become the CW network in the fall.
A WB spokesman confirmed a TV Guide report on Friday that said the supernatural series, which stars Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs, will end after eight seasons in May.
The final episode of "Charmed" will air on May 21, TV Guide said.
A New York theatre's decision to postpone a play about an American activist killed by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza has prompted trans-Atlantic charges of censorship from its British creators.
"This is censorship born out of fear," said the British actor Alan Rickman, who directed the original, award-winning run of "My Name is Rachel Corrie" at the Royal Court in London.
The New York Theater Workshop, which had tentatively scheduled to stage the play later this month, has vehemently denied the censorship charge.
"My Name is Rachel Corrie" is a solo show based on her diary entries and e-mails home, edited by Rickman and Katharine Viner, a features editor with the British newspaper, The Guardian.
Madonna, Snoop Dogg and David Bowie are among the voices featured in "Arthur and the Minimoys," a live-action/computer-animated fantasy feature based on a popular French children's book by filmmaker Luc Besson, who is directing the project.
The story centers on 10-year-old Arthur (Freddie Highmore of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"), who tries to save the home of his grandmother (Mia Farrow) by seeking out his grandfather's treasure in the land of the tiny Minimoys. There he encounters Princess Selenia (Madonna) and Max (Snoop Dogg), who travel with him to a city ruled by the nefarious Malthazar (Bowie).
Besson, noted for directing such films as "The Messenger: Joan of Arc" and "The Professional," has spent more than three years working on the "Arthur" film.
Director Robert Towne arrives for the premiere of 'Ask The Dust' at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, March 3, 2006. The movie is set to be released on March 10.

Officials are investigating how "American Idol" celebrity judge Paula Abdul breached security at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport when she boarded a plane without passing through a screening checkpoint.
Aviation officials said Abdul and a companion bypassed the mandatory screening process before boarding a 12:20 p.m. Thursday flight headed for Burbank, Calif.
Federal Transportation Safety Administration officials were alerted to the breach while the Southwest Airlines plane was in the air. When it landed, all passengers and baggage were screened again before entering the terminal at Bob Hope Airport, TSA spokeswoman Jessica Altschul said.
A woman who claims to be involved in a video showing former Creed lead singer Scott Stapp and rap-rocker Kid Rock with several strippers has sued Stapp for invasion of privacy.
The woman, identified as Jane Doe in a lawsuit filed in Miami on Thursday, claims she was under the belief that the video was to remain in Stapp's private possession.
The lawsuit seeks to prevent the sale of the video and asks for unspecified damages. The suit alleges the woman suffered emotional distress and the video used her name or likeness without her permission.

Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan, who is helping to bankroll the birth of a Florida town and university, backtracked Friday from comments that he'd like the community to be governed by strict Roman Catholic principles.
His ideas about barring pornography and birth control, he said, apply only to the Catholic university.
Both the town of Ave Maria and its Ave Maria University, the first Catholic university to be built in the United States in four decades, are set to open next year about 25 miles east of Naples in southwest Florida.
Monaghan's comments Friday contrasted with statements he made last year to a Catholic men's group in Boston that pornographic magazines won't be sold in town, pharmacies won't carry condoms or birth control pills, and cable television will carry no X-rated channels.

A pair of stolen slippers once worn by Indian royalty have been found. The lavishly jewelled shoes were taken from the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto in January.
The slippers valued at $160,000, were stolen along with two other 18th century artifacts: a gold toe ring, valued at $11,000 and a gold anklet valued at $45,000.
The slippers were worn by the Nizam Sikandar Jah of Hyderabad during his rule from 1803 to 1829.

Nazi code that eluded the best cryptographers the Allied forces had to offer during World War II has been solved by an amateur codebreaker with the assistance of a network of computers.
The three uncracked ciphers -- a cipher is a method of transforming text in order to conceal its meaning -- were encrypted in 1942 with a new version of the infamous German Enigma machine, which was used to direct attacks against Allied shipping in the Atlantic.
The M4 Project, the brainchild of Stefan Krah, a violinist and amateur cryptographer of German birth, is credited with cracking one of the three remaining ciphers. The project was named in honor of the M4 Enigma machine that originally encoded the messages.
