Baron Dave Romm
Wally Pleasant
By Baron Dave Romm
Wally Pleasant
Louden Wainwright III collides with Weird
Al Yankovic
I confess I'm a couple of Wally Pleasant CDs behind.
They're hard to find in stores; you mainly get them from his Miranda
Records. I first encoutered Songs About Stuff in the used
bins, and liked it so much I got on his mailing list, and get alerted
to tours but seem to have missed some new releases. Sorry Wally.
"Wally will be touring EVERYWHERE! HE'S TAKING OVER THE WORLD!" and
he will be happy to write and record a song for any occasion, claims
his web site. Mostly, he hangs around the E. Lansing MI area, but
does go on the occasional tour.
Songs
About Stuff is his first album, from 1992. It feels like a first
album; just Wally and his guitar. It's a staggering amount of fun,
especially for those of us who weren't too stoned to remember college
but sometimes regret we weren't. Wally laments your (not necessarily
his) lack of success with women in She's In Love With A Geek,
That's Evolution, First Love and Bad Haircut.
If I Were is a flight of speculative fancy on the order of
Simon and Garfunkel's El Condor Pasa or Cat Steven's
Moonshadow. Musical legends get deconstructed in Dead Rock
n Roll Stars, though still (I Wanna Be A) Pop Star. His
Hippies Lament is more effective than your average Cartman
insult, though he also regrets his Lost Weekend In Las Vegas.
A lot of his songs are more spoken (or at least blurted out) than
sung, sort of reminiscent of the patter songs of Jimmy Durante. Sort
of. Frankly, this is my favorite of the three albums reviewed here.
It's utterly without pretense or guile, never hitting a false note;
full of clever lyrics and nice tunes. He must be a blast live. More
sophomorically folksy than Louden Wainwright III (another of my
favorites) or as commercial as Weird Al Yankovic's original songs
(alas for him), these remain unrepentent and listenable.
Welcome to
Pleasantville has a lot of fun songs on it, and is an attempt to
go commercial that doesn't quite take off. I Was A Teenage
Republican, both the solo and the George Bush Megamix Version,
deconstruct the Reagan/Bush years. With another Bush in office, the
same jokes work. Hmm.... Anyway, his anti Smoking song also
works and he goes back to talking about his profession in Rock
Song and does the 50s in the Rock-N-Roll Yard Sale. His
sense of humor, college-level searching for Truth-with-a-Capital-T
and self-deprecating patter really shine in How I Got Lost On The
Road Less Travelled But Then Got Instand Karma ON I-96. Sort of
Weird Al's Albuquerque from someone who has taken too many
Senior philosophy courses. Sort of.
By Houses of
the Holy Moly, Wally has graduated (or at least left) college and
wails his Post Graduate Overeducated Out of Work Blues before
falling into his Stupid Day Job. Wally claims I'm
Nice, a change from his selfish past. Didn't help him get a job
at Enron. Just as well. Topics range from Alternateen to
Toxic Waste Party and Wonderful Sex. The Cat Came
Back has as many versions as there are returning felines, and he
puts his stamp on this rock ballad variant. Still, what makes this
album worthwhile, all by itself, is Song for Bob Dylan. Done
Dylan style, he skewers folk singers and commercial expectations with
a precise ear. This is the song that replaced I'm In Love With A
Geek as the most frequently played on Shockwave. "Bob Dylan was
the first Bob Dylan, who was billed as the next Woody Guthrie...."
His latest CD is His latest CD is Music for
Nerds & Perverts, which I'll review soon.
Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual
artist and a noble
of Ladonia with a radio
show, a very
weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews
things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music
recommendations from Bartcop-E here, you can
order Shockwave Radio
Theater CDs, and you can hear the last two Shockwave broadcasts
in Real Audio here (scroll down to
Shockwave). Thanks to everyone who has sent me music to play
on the air, and I'm continuing to collect extra-weird stuff.

An Excerpt:
A common way to swindle recruits out of promised jobs is the "Moment of Truth" exercise in boot camp. New recruits are taken to a room where their DI (drill instructor) tells them to "really think about it" and see if they've lied while enlisting or filling out their application.
"They'll ask the recruits if they lied about things like ever having smoked grass, or maybe how many times they've smoked, and ask them to raise their hand if they've lied any time in the recruiting process," Massey said. When the hands go up, the DI looks at them and says, "Listen. This is what's gonna happen now. You lied to us. You can either quit in disgrace now, or since you signed a contract to be a Marine, you can stay in, but we're not going to let you have the job you asked for."
An Excerpt:
A few years ago, I heard Archbishop Desmond Tutu speak at a Los Angeles benefit for a South African project. He'd been fighting prostate cancer, was tired that evening, and had taken a nap before his talk. But when Tutu addressed the audience he became animated, expressing amazement that his long-oppressed country had provided the world with an unforgettable lesson in reconciliation and hope. Afterward, a few other people spoke, and then a band from East L.A. took the stage and launched into an irresistibly rhythmic tune. People started dancing. Suddenly I noticed Tutu, boogying away in the middle of the crowd. I'd never seen a Nobel Peace Prize winner, still less one with a potentially fatal illness, move with such joy and abandonment. Tutu, I realized, knows how to have a good time. Indeed, it dawned on me that his ability to recognize and embrace life's pleasures helps him face its cruelties and disappointments, be they personal or political.

Visits Neruda's House
Laura 'Pickles' Bush
US First Lady Laura Bush visited Pablo Neruda's house-turned-museum to honor the late Chilean poet, a museum official said, angering some activists who took it as a sleight to his Communist past.
Laura Bush's spokesman Gordon Johndroe earlier denied any political significance to the private visit, saying: "He did win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. That's why Mrs Bush is going to his house: Because of his work as a writer."
Asked whether the first lady was a fan of Neruda, Johndroe replied: "Mrs Bush is a fan of literature in general, and as long as she's in Santiago she wanted to see the house."

Movie Musical
Righteous Brothers
Blue-eyed soul duo the Righteous Brothers will be the subject of the next musical foray for Arthur Friedman, producer of upcoming Bobby Darin biopic "Beyond the Sea."
Friedman optioned feature rights from remaining Righteous Brother Bill Medley and the duo's longtime manager, David B. Cohen. Bobby Hatfield, the other half of the singing team, died last November at the age of 63 after a gig in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Friedman told Daily Variety the film also would be a character study of the low-key Medley and wild man Hatfield, who suffered from a lifelong case of stage fright. Their differences led to multiple breakups over the group's 42 years.

In this undated photo released by the Bonhams and Butterfield auction house, a rare and large example of a Ming underglaze copper red dish recently discovered within a San Francisco estate is shown. The hand-me-down dish used for crab dinners fetched a record $5.7 million in an auction this week, after art experts determined it was extremely rare Ming dynasty porcelain. The flowery, copper-red plate _ which set a record for Ming art sold in a U.S. auction _ once belonged to Elinor Majors Carlisle, a Berkeley businesswoman who became a public education crusader and suffragette in the 1890s.

A Mother First
Diana Ross
Diana Ross looked every inch the diva as she pulled up to Musictech College in a black stretch limo and got out wrapped in a thick fur coat and wearing dark sunglasses. Striding across a specially rented red carpet leading to the school door, Ross beamed as she accepted a bouquet of white roses and signed record albums held out for her autograph.
But inside the small music conservatory, where a new full scholarship was named in her honor Saturday, Ross told an audience of more than 100 students that it's not divadom that defines her - it's motherhood.
"I'm more a mom than I am a celebrity, even though I know you know me as a celebrity. I'm a mother first," she said.

Continue in Richmond
Mysterious 'Booms'
Those mysterious booms on Richmond's Northside continue to be-fuddle city officials. They've been happening for three weeks now and residents say no one can tell them why.
The latest "boom" was just last night. Based on a map of 911 calls received since the booming noises began, the majority came from the area near Palmyra and Gloucester.
For three weeks, city officials have explored a multitude of scenarios. They've come up empty and still the booms and shakes continue. Officials have looked into every logical explanation: a buildup of sewer or natural gas -- both of which have been ruled out for now.

Often Gets Personal
Disney Trial
The lawsuit shareholders have brought against Disney has come to resemble a Hollywood potboiler of betrayed friendships, secret meetings and wounded egos. During five days of testimony, Disney chief executive Michael Eisner delivered a forceful and often bittersweet account of the 14-month tenure of agent-to-the-stars Michael Ovitz as Disney's president.
The lawsuit contends that Disney's board was negligent in hiring Ovitz to a lucrative deal - and negligent again because it agreed to fork over a cash and stock package valued at $140 million to get him out in December 1995.
Eisner, whose testimony ended Friday, acknowledged being less than candid during a joint appearance with Ovitz on CNN's "Larry King Live" in September 1996. On the show, Eisner dismissed reports of tension between the two men and said he would hire Ovitz again, if given the chance.
In reality, Eisner already had decided to fire Ovitz. Eisner, who denied a lawyer's contention that he lied, said he wasn't completely candid during the interview because Sony was considering hiring Ovitz.

Reunited With Pets
Vanilla Ice
Bucky Buckaroo the wallaroo and Pancho the goat may soon be back in the custody of their rapper owner Vanilla Ice.
Bucky and Pancho escaped more than a week ago and spent several days frolicking in the streets and wooded areas of St. Lucie County in southeast Florida. They made a run for it after Pancho nudged open an unlocked door with his head and the two broke out of a relative's backyard.
The animals were captured Nov. 13 after the 60-pound wallaroo - a cross between a wallaby and a kangaroo - scratched a woman's car. But Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert van Winkle, was out of town and could not immediately claim them.

At Loss for Words
Arctic Peoples
Many indigenous languages have no words for legions of new animals, insects and plants advancing north as global warming thaws the polar ice and lets forests creep over tundra.
"We can't even describe what we're seeing," said Sheila Watt-Cloutier, chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference which says it represents 155,000 people in Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Russia.
In the Inuit language Inuktitut, robins are known just as the "bird with the red breast," she said. Inuit hunters in north Canada recently saw some ducks but have not figured out what species they were, in Inuktitut or any other language.
An eight-nation report this month says the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet and that the North Pole could be ice-free in northern hemisphere summer by 2100, threatening indigenous cultures and perhaps wiping out creatures like polar bears.
