Nazi hunter Simon
Wiesenthal died on September 20, 2005CE after a life dedicated to
remembering and bringing to justice some of the most evil villains in
human history. After a life fleeing the Bolsheviks and living under
the Soviets and surviving 11 different Nazi Concentration Camps,
Wiesenthal hunted down amoral murderers with a remarkable track
record of bringing 1,100
war criminals to trial. To honor his life -- in a very small way
-- right before the High Holy Days, let me talk a little about
non-traditional Jewish and Polish music from here in the States.
None of these artists are directly connected to Wiesenthal, to my
knowledge, but all of us owe him a debt. And if the Nazis had won
WWII, or if people forgot their atrocities, none of these artists
would be alive. I think it's fitting to heil, heil right in der
fuehrer's face.
I've talked about klezmer and Klingon Klezmer, both
of which keep traditional Easter European Jewish music alive.
Pearls
In The Snow features many country performers, from Willie Nelson
(doing a nice job on the Country Holocaust Song Ride 'Em
Jewboy) to Dwight Yoakam to Lyle Lovett to an out-take of Kinky
and Little Jewford. If you like Friedman's songs, you'll appreciate
the tribute: Kinky himself is kinda rough around the edges, which is
part of his charm. Only Willie Nelson really rises above the Kinky
versions (can I say that?), but you'll have fun hearing your favorite
country stars singing some offbeat tunes. Definitely iPod worthy.
I'm not entirely sure how to tell you about Steve Lieberman,
The Gangsta Rabbi. I have two of his recent CDs, seventy-three
minutes for Jewish
Lightning (scroll down a bit for descriptions of all the songs)
and sixty-nine minutes for In The
Underground , and I haven't listened to either of them all the
way through. Lieberman writes his own material (with a few
exceptions), and plays all the instruments on every cut. He brings
his wife and daughter into the project as photographers and such. I
would describe his musical genre as thrash, though that leaves
out his heavy Jethro Tull
influence. The recordings are fuzzy and the instrumentation
non-standard, with plenty of flute. The subject/titles of his songs
range from Diaspora Blaster to Punk-Rock Jethro Tull
Song to Nazis Shoveling Snow (based loosely on a scene in
Schindler's List) to Jew in the Underground to a cover
of Green Day's American idiot to No Holocaust Under My
Watch to I Lost My Girl On the Tile-A-Whirl.
I can't, in good conscience, give an unabashed recommendation for
Steve Lieberman, but I must say his energy and attitude are
infectious. He has something to say and by damn he's going to say
it. If you'll pardon a very stretched analogy, I think he's as
fearless as Simon Wiesenthal and just as smolderingly angry. The
basement tape quality of the CDs brings us back to the roots of punk,
if not the roots of rock and roll... if not the roots of our
oppressed people. He reminded me of American Pop,
a classic American journey of Jewish musicians. His CDs are cheap
via his site or even cdbaby.com's
sale. iPod worthy for fans of the
punk/thrash/post-punk/pre-grunge/hassidic/celtic tradition.
Chaston & Groditski
again mine their musical vaults for the presciently named Insane
Doo-Wop From Chaston & Groditski. The entire liner notes read as
follows: Idiotic songs in the doo-wop genre, recorded by Pete
Chaston & Walt Groditski over the years in pure silliness for your
enjoyment and cultural enrichment! The CD is so obscure that
it's not listed on CDDB, or even on their web site. They're
not going to make you forget The Tokens or even Sha Na
Na, but several of the cuts are nicely done and could have been
played at a Senior Prom in the late 50s. With a Polish twist, of
course, as befitting the Rugged Hoarhadees: Walking With My
Baba and Tell Me, Jelly Donut or even Um-Bop Waa
Waa. Less successful are the covers and the more basement tape
quality recordings. They venture into other forms with the semi-punk
Shower Rock Blues and the downright strange The Ants Are
Here to help justify the "insane" monicker.
As with their other CDs, whether you like Insane Doo-Wop
depends a lot on your mood and tolerance for enthusiasm over
technique. Still, if you liked the others, you'll probably like
something on this CD.
So thumb your nose at a Nazi or neo-Nazi today! Appreciate the
music that proves we are a free people! Exercise your G_d given,
American right to listen to what you want, and not what Big
Brother or Clear Channel tells you to. (Hey, I said it was a
stretched analogy...)
September 25 - Frodo and the gang take a shortcut across country and end up in Farmer Maggot's fields, arriving at the Maggot farmhouse only moments after a Black Rider, thus avoiding an early and disappointing end to the book. They enjoy a hearty hobbit meal and accept a ride to Buckleberry Ferry. On the way, they run into Merry who is out looking for them in the dark. As they cross the Brandywine, they look back to see a Black Rider sniffing around the landing, thus narrowly escaping yet another early and disappointing end to the book. They arrive at Crickhollow and the conspiracy is revealed. Merry and Pippin declare their intention to go with Frodo on his journey.
Reading the events of this day, especially the dinner with the Maggots, always makes me hungry for mushrooms.
Also, this day being a Sunday, we see that hobbits are not good Baptists, as there is no mention of them missing church.
Thanks for posting my question Marty and thanks to all who replied with a
suggestion. The picture above is a Cooper's Hawk which is my guess at
identification. I based my opinion on the pattern on the breast. The
Sharp-Shinned has a more reticulated pattern on the breast. That's my
story and I'm stickin' to it.

"I am interested in the fleeting moment, the gesture, that action that can
be found in the everyday. Moments that are often missed, that are nothing
and at the same time part of a greater rhythm of our life on earth. In
these there is something specific to the time and place, yet universal.
These are the spaces in-between. These are the moment of action and
reaction, of new beginnings, a complete story. Or they are just as they
appear - a simple glance, a wave, a walk."
-Morgan Showalter-
"A tragic tale of romance, passion and murder most foul" These are the words of Mr. Bone Jangles (voice of Danny Elfman)! Well it turns out that Tim Burton's lastest amazing work is more like "Cinderella" meets "Tales from the Crypt" and the "Triplets of Belleville" with a great twisted ending! "Corpse Bride" is also an original musical with delightful songs by Danny Elfman - who wrote the Soundtracks for "Weird Science", "Beverly Hills Cops", "PeeWee's Playhouse", "Beetle Juice" , "Mars Attack" ….and the theme music for "The Simpsons" and "Desperate Housewives" (He had a band in the 70's called Oingo Boingo).
Here's the story line: In a 19th century European village, a young man, Victor, is about to be wedded "off" to Victoria (They've already done "Victor - Victoria" ) but the bride's and groom's parents have evil ulterior motives…….all involving money and social status! Well Victor accidently puts the wedding ring on dead finger sticking out of the ground and recites his wedding vows, unknowingly, to a CORPSE !!!!! This particular corpse ain't gonna take no…so she comes up out of the ground to get her man.
The plot thickens when, thinking Victor had died, Victoria get pawned off to marry the sinister Barkis Bittern! Oh the cruel twists of fate….will Victor and Victoria ever find true love??????
You're gonna have to go see this "Crypt Opera" to find out !!!
Purple Gene gives "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" 9 bony ring fingers out of 10 for being another almost perfectly entertaining Tim Burton Fantasy !!!!

The town that playwright Eugene O'Neill called home during the twilight of his life will dedicate a $100,000 memorial honoring him near a public library.
The memorial's centerpiece is a large plaque that features bronze letters spelling out a passage from "Long Days Journey Into Night," one of his most famous works.
O'Neill lived and wrote at Tao House from 1937 to 1944, completing six of his better known plays, including "Long Days Journey" and "The Iceman Cometh." He died in 1953.

Scientists from Mexico's tequila producing region say juice extracted from the blue agave plant, best known when distilled into the fiery spirit, may help dieters shed pounds and cut cholesterol.
Sadly for the world's growing band of tequila lovers, agave's possible health benefits are lost when the plant is distilled into alcohol.
Now however, researchers from the University of Guadalajara, close to the town of Tequila, the cradle of Mexico's famous alcoholic export, say the plant's powers go beyond inducing euphoric highs followed by crushing hangovers.

Three new books released ahead of Tony Blair's Labour Party conference next week take aim at everything from the prime minister's struggles over the Iraq war to his choice of glasses, and they paint a frank and sometimes unflattering picture of the British leader.
Blair, whose election in 1997 ended 18 years of Conservative Party rule, is one of Britain's longest-serving prime ministers. He dragged the Labour Party from the left to the centre and gained power with ambitious promises to transform Britain's creaking public services and bring the country closer to its European Union neighbours.

Africa's last absolute monarch, Swaziland's King Mswati III, has picked his 13th wife, a palace spokesman said.
The 17-year-old Phindile Nkambule, who finished her final exams in June to allow her to join the royal house, was unveiled as his next wife-to-be at a traditional reed dance ceremony at the weekend.
According to custom, the king, who rules by decree, will marry Nkambule once she falls pregnant.
In June, Mswati married the 16-year-old Nothando Dube and currently has 12 wives but two of them have absconded.

Thomas Ross Bond, who played Butch the bully in the "Our Gang" and "The Little Rascals" serials of the 1930s, has died. He was 79.
Bond played a member of the Gang named Tommy. After his first year he was dropped from the cast but returned later in the role of Butch, the archenemy of Alfalfa.
Born Sept. 16, 1926 in Dallas, Bond got his start at the age of 5 when a talent scout for Hal Roach studios approached him as he was leaving a movie theater with his mother.
In the 1940s, Bond played Jimmy Olsen in two Superman movies and appeared as Joey Pepper in several installments of the "Five Little Peppers" serial.
In 1951, Bond quit acting and went into television directing and production work before retiring in 1991.
Bond is survived by his wife, Pauline, son Thomas Ross Bond III and a grandson.
