Baron Dave Romm
Surf, Poetry and Rock from Seattle
By Baron Dave Romm
Surf, Poetry and Rock from
Seattle
Independently produced CDs
Seattle, well-known for the grunge scene, is also home to some
other energetic music. Vagrant
Records is an independent label that has been around for several
years, and has a large catalog
of punk, surf and other music.
I'm not familiar with their studio work, but Invasion
of the "Live" Boss Martians is pretty good. They do surfin'
music, and do it well. Music to get sand between your toes by. I'm
tired of bands that apologize for bad musicianship by claiming
"energy" or somesuch. Fine and dandy, but it gets old. The Boss
Martians play well; crisp and clean and layered. The problem with a
lot of punk/grunge is that it's too fast to dance to. This is dance
music that harkens back to the early 60s, recorded in 1997. Most of
the songs are instrumentals, but sometimes they do a song with lyrics
like Good Golly Miss Molly and sometimes get the audience
involved as with Surfin' Bird, though that's less successful.
Their best sound is when they're playing pure surf, as with AA
Growler or Straight-8, and they do a credible version of
Mancini's Banzai Pipeline.
The Boss Martians are a good addition to any collection full of The
Ventures and The Beach
Boys.
Going back a little further to the late 50's/early 60's beat
movement comes Doug Savercool and Weird
Poetry. Poetry, whether produced or live in "slams" is not the
same thing as standup comedy, though they are related. The spoken
word, often with a music bed, has been around since at least Ken
Nordine's Word Jazz, with
stops along the way for Tom Smith and a
growing spoken
word movement. Savercool's punk and often bawdy tales might
have played in Las Vegas in the 50s of Lord Buckley but would never
have made it to tv or records until recently. His subject matter is
punk: Anger at girls, right-wing politicians, co-workers and so on.
His style is almost rap: Internal rhymes with an angry cadence.
Some of the cuts are live and some are produced with music beds. I'm
not going to give a blanket recommendation, but if you like your
spoken word with an attitude, you will like Savercool.
Here in 2004, Henry Boy's
sop to grunge is a fuzz guitar, which distracts. But he's wise enough
not to use it a lot. The Big Parade is driving rock that never
went away no matter what was "in" at the time. The album seems a
progression of craftmanship, as the earlier songs are more grunge and
the later songs more pure rock. Still, the clarity of vision is
evident. The cleaner sound of Aeroplanes works as well as the
tuneful Summertown. Henry Boy infuses repetitious pop music
lyrics with odd pop culture references. The album ends with the
title cut, the longest cut, The Big Parade, which will leave
you wanting more. While none of the songs grabbed me on first
listening, I'd rather hear real rock than most of the junk on top-40
stations. So I guess Henry Boy falls into a brand new category of
music: iPod Worthy. (Which is abbreviated iPW.)
Baron Dave Romm is a
conceptual artist and a noble of Ladonia with
a radio show, a very weird CD
collection and an ever growing list of political links. Dave Romm reviews things at random for
obscure web sites. You can read all his music
recommendations from Bartcop-E , and you can hear the last two Shockwave
broadcasts in Real Audio (scroll down to Shockwave). Thanks
to everyone who has sent me music to play on the air.

Purple Gene Reviews
'Monster-in-Law'
Purple Genes' review of the movie "Monster-in-Law" (2005) directed by Robert Luketic:
"Barbarella's" back starring with that "Gigli" girl in a movie directed by the man who gave us "TITSiana BOOBerini"….I'm not kidding! What in the hell are these people thinking?????? "Hanoi Jane and J-Lo in a comedy?????? WOW what a stretch !
Somebody should be shot for letting this one get out on the screen…..Not even a piece of FLUFF….as my wife says "a piece of old LINT"…….
OK so lets revive Jane Fonda's (Born again Christian - Mrs. Ted Turner doing the CHOP at a Braves Game - bouncy ass aerobic tape maker) career by putting her in a silly little movie with a catchy title, "Monster in Law", with Jennifer Lopez (almost mrs. Ben/Jen Affleck now Mrs. Mark Anthony semi-singer - dancer and kinda movie star) Oh …and let's get a director that's really GOOD….how about Robert Luketic???? He directed a little flick called "Titsiana Booberini" ….. I swear, everything I'm saying is true….and what do you get with this great combination of talent?????? CRAP !!
I'm not going to dignify the dreck with a description of the PLOT..because you've all seen the trailer on TV and the trailer is ten times better than the whole movie…..I mean this thing really SUCKS……don't see this movie. It's a waste of money and time !!!!!!!
Purple Gene gives the Movie "Monster-in-Law" 1 really ridiculous giggle out of 10 for being way short on FUNNY and way long on FLOP!!!!!!!

Jab At Bush's Empire
'Star Wars'
The last episode of the seminal sci-fi saga "Star Wars" screened at the Cannes film festival, completing a six-part series that remains a major part of popular culture -- and delivering a galactic jab to US resident George W. Bush.
Reaction at advance screenings was effusive, with festival-goers, critics and journalists at Cannes applauding at the moment the infamous Darth Vader came into being.
But there were also murmurs at the parallels being drawn between Bush's administration and the birth of the space opera's evil Empire.
Baddies' dialogue about bloodshed and despicable acts being needed to bring "peace and stability" to the movie's universe, mainly through a fabricated war, set the scene.
And then came the zinger, with the protagonist, Anakin Skywalker, saying just before becoming Darth Vader: "You are either with me -- or you are my enemy."
To the Cannes audience, often sympathetic to anti-Bush messages in cinema as last year's triumph here of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" attested, that immediately recalled Bush's 2001 ultimatum, "You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror."

Says He's Not Crazy
Dave Chappelle
Comedian Dave Chappelle wants to set things straight: "I'm not crazy, I'm not smoking crack," he tells Time magazine in an interview more than a week after his hit Comedy Central show was suspended and the rumors started to fly.
"I'm definitely stressed out," said Chappelle, who took off last month to South Africa for a "spiritual retreat," leaving his fans - and even his agent and publicist - wondering where he went.
"You hear so many voices jockeying for position in your mind that you want to make sure that you hear your own voice," he said. "So I figured, let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone - stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes."
"I'm not in a mental facility," said Chappelle, who also said he did not have a drug problem but had consulted a psychiatrist for one 40-minute visit.
Chappelle, whose wife and two children live in Ohio, said he hopes to start up the show again, but did not indicate when he would return.

Plans To Clone?
Thylacine
Australian researchers are reviving a project to bring an extinct animal known as the Tasmanian tiger back from the dead through cloning.
Three months after the Australian Museum shelved plans to clone the tiger -- also known as a thylacine -- a group of universities and a research institute are planning to revive the project, the Sun-Herald newspaper reported.
The Tasmanian tiger, a dog-like creature christened for its striped pelt, was hunted into extinction because it was seen as a threat to livestock.
The last known specimen died in Hobart zoo in 1936 but there have been thousands of unconfirmed sightings since then.

Sex-Mad Demon In Zanzibar
Popo Bawa
Mohammed Juma starts to sweat and fidget as he recalls his rape by Popo Bawa, the most feared spirit-monster of the Zanzibar spice islands.
"We believe reading the Koran is our only defence, nothing else," says the 41-year-old driver and father of four. "But Popo Bawa is real, and well prepared."
Holidaymakers on the Indian Ocean islands tend to smile dismissively at accounts in guidebooks of the bat-like ogre said to prey on men, women and children. But for superstitious Zanzibaris a visit from the sodomising gremlin is no joke.
Although no one ever has seen it, belief in the monster and his unnatural lust is so strong that entire villages will sleep out of doors for protection: Popo Bawa (Swahili for Bat's Wing) prefers to attack behind closed doors at night.
For a lot more, Popo Bawa

Wins Award
Hero Dog
A border collie and golden retriever mix from Missouri has won the National Hero Dog award for alerting her owner that her husband was pinned underneath a tractor.
Eight-year-old Shannon, who lives on an 80-acre farm in Washington, Mo., accepted the 23rd annual National Hero Dog award Friday with her owners Ted and Peggy Mandry.
The award does not honor trained rescue dogs but "a companion animal that's well-treated and has bonded with the family, so they somehow know what to do and step up to the plate when there's trouble," said Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles.
For her heroic act, Shannon was treated to an airplane flight to Los Angeles (she got to sit in the cabin instead of being stowed in cargo) and a stay at a beachside hotel.
She also received a plaque from the SPCA, a year's supply of dog food and a "goodie bag" filled with treats.
