Dubai Ports World

By Baron Dave Romm

Dubai Ports World

Cronyism -- not ties to arab terrorism -- is the reason to look twice at the deal

March 3-5, Baron Dave will be at Marscon 2006 in Bloomington, MN which also features many of the musicians recommended here.

George W. Bush might get to cast his first veto, six years into occupying the White House. Will it be to reduce pork-laden tax bills? Raise taxes to pay for the War In Iraq? Reject Congress' attempt to slash funding for schools and mthe military? No, it might be to defend a decision he didn't even realize he'd made until he heard about it on the news.

As Joe conason says in this Salon.com premium report Business As Usual:

What seems worrisome even to some who might ultimately accept the Dubai ports deal is the "casual attitude" of the Bush administration in vetting the company, as Sen. Carl Levin put it. Considering the history of Bush entanglement with the oil despots of the Gulf, that lax indulgence was bad policy and worse politics.

For the president, his administration's lenience toward the Emirates recalls the unpleasant history of Harken Energy, the loser oil exploration firm that provided him with a handsome profit when he unloaded his shares during the summer of 1990. Years earlier, Harken had been rescued from bankruptcy by timely investments of millions of dollars from the scandal-ridden Bank of Credit and Commerce International, also known as the "bank of crooks and criminals." Although dominated by Saudi friends of Dubya's dad, BCCI was headquartered in the Emirates, specifically in Abu Dhabi.

That may seem like old history, but the first family's intimate connection with the UAE royals has continued without rupture over the past two decades.

The Bush administration is combination of incompetent fools and corrupt businessmen who value the dollar more than the flag. The prime suspect and major beneficiary in this venture seems to be the friends of Treasury Secretary John Snow. From the commondreams.org archive of the New York Daily News report Dubai Company Set to Run U.S. Ports Has Ties to Administration:

The Dubai firm that won Bush administration backing to run six U.S. ports has at least two ties to the White House.

One is Treasury Secretary John Snow, whose department heads the federal panel that signed off on the $6.8 billion sale of an English company to government-owned Dubai Ports World - giving it control of Manhattan's cruise ship terminal and Newark's container port.

Snow was chairman of the CSX rail firm that sold its own international port operations to DP World for $1.15 billion in 2004, the year after Snow left for President Bush's cabinet.

The other connection is David Sanborn, who runs DP World's European and Latin American operations and who was tapped by Bush last month to head the U.S. Maritime Administration.

Over on Daily Kos, Anacher Forester files this report, Baker Key to Dubai Ports Mess

According to Baker Botts, on April 15, 2005: "the firm expanded its presence in the region by opening a Middle East regional office in Dubai to complement our existing office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia." Why? "Baker Botts' Dubai office provides service to clients in a number of sectors in the energy industry, including oil and gas exploration and development, oil field services, electric power, LNG, petrochemicals, pipelines, and gas-to-liquids." I bet they do. Clearly Baker Botts has a vested interest in the Bush Administration's push toward a "free" trade agreement with the UAE. I'll return to the Dubai office later.

We've only just glimpsed the tip of the proverbial Bakerberg. James A. Baker also serves as Senior Counsel to the secretive Carlyle Group where The Guardian has reported his equity stake at an estimated $180 million US. The Carlyle Group has made hundreds of millions of dollars in the "war on terror" as owner or part owner of defense contractors: The Aerostructures Corporation, Combined Tactical Systems, Inc., DHS Technologies, Landmark Aviation, Stellex Aerostructures, Inc., Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc., Canada's Standard Aero Holdings, Inc., Italy's Avio SpA, US/Brit split Firth Rixson Limited and Britain's NP Aerospace & recently privatized QinetiQ. Due to increased scrutiny of their war profiteering (brought on primarily due to Baker's role as Iraq debt envoy), Carlyle has within the past two years "exited" their long-time investments in United Defense (CG's very first defense contractor acquisition in 1997) as well as United States Marine Repair, Aviall and Indigo Systems.

The Carlyle Group's sway over US policies both foreign and domestic doesn't end with the military-industrial complex. They have their grubby fingers in a whole lotta pies. A good primer on Carlyle including how they gave GWB a job in 1991 and how they influence U.S.-Korean policy can be found here: Carlyle's Way. Suffice to say that when Baker and Daddy both say "frog", W jumps.

Forester cites The Nation's article James Baker's Double Life: A Special Investigation

Until now, there has been no concrete evidence that Baker's loyalties are split, or that his power as Special Presidential Envoy--an unpaid position--has been used to benefit any of his corporate clients or employers. But according to documents obtained by The Nation, that is precisely what has happened. Carlyle has sought to secure an extraordinary $1 billion investment from the Kuwaiti government, with Baker's influence as debt envoy being used as a crucial lever.

The secret deal involves a complex transaction to transfer ownership of as much as $57 billion in unpaid Iraqi debts. The debts, now owed to the government of Kuwait, would be assigned to a foundation created and controlled by a consortium in which the key players are the Carlyle Group, the Albright Group (headed by another former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright) and several other well-connected firms. Under the deal, the government of Kuwait would also give the consortium $2 billion up front to invest in a private equity fund devised by the consortium, with half of it going to Carlyle.

I could go on.

None of this, I point out, is particularly illegal. At least, no one's been convicted of any crimes as yet. But you can't help feel the slime. It feels... oily. Once again the Bush administration's sleaze factor comes to the forefront, and once again the conservative news media doesn't lead with the real story. Initially, Homeland Security Objected to Ports Deal. How were they persuaded to change their mind? The right-wing media asked Clinton what kind of underwear he had on, but they don't have the journalistic integrity to follow the money to real scandals. John Kerry has guts, following the money all the way to the BCCI Bank, peripherally involved in the Dubai Ports scandal.

No one on the right has guts or integrity. Once again, Republicans are soft on crime... when it's theirs.

Much like the no-bid contracts awarded to Deadeye Dick's friends at Halliburton, The Dubai Ports deal tried to slide under the radar. Failing that, they'll simply bull through and take the money. The election of Hamas in Gaza, the continuing nuclear threat from Iran and the deadly radical protests against free speech demonstrate that the Republican's claim to be spreading democracy in the Middle East is just so much hot air. Can we trust a nominal ally, the United Arab Emirites, to be involved with even a little bit of our security? I don't know; I would like to think so, but the administration would have to make a better case than this one. Far more troubling, to me, is the cronyism and potential misuse of tax dollars. The corrupt and uncaring conservatives are going to get away with this. I ask the question Bob Dole asked in 1996: Where is the outrage?

I simply don't trust George W. Bush. Would you let him play with your kids?

"I am extremely angry at what they have done with that video footage. I plan on suing them..."
-Sean Hannity on THIS DIVIDED STATE

Starting today (Thursday, Feb 23rd), Minority Films is offering, for free, the horrendous speech Sean Hannity gave at Utah Valley State College in the documentary film THIS DIVIDED STATE .

It is 10 minutes of pure infuriating numb-skullery and is completely upsetting to anyone who has a sense of civility.

Everyone should see this footage! It is unbelievable that Sean Hannity can get on Fox News every night and claim "balance" and "civil discourse".

The footage is now streaming at  THIS DIVIDED STATE

TOMMY LEE KICK SERIOUS BUTT... ACROSS BROAD AND BEAUTIFUL VISTAS IN "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada"

WHEN I DIE I WANT TOMMY TO TAKE CARE OF MY FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS. HAVEN'T HAD THIS MUCH FUN SINCE "The Professionals" BARRY PEPPER WAS THE PERFECT ROAD MOVIE COMPANION FOR THIS 2006 HORSE OPERA. THIS GUY DESERVES AN OSCAR FOR PUTTING UP WITH THIS KIND OF SHIT AND STILL STAYING IN CHARACTER. TOMMY IS RELENTLESS AS GUANTANAMO.

I AM WORRIED ABOUT TOMMY LEE. WHY DOES HE HAVE A THING FOR DRAGGING DEAD BODIES ALL OVER THE LANDSCAPE? ("Lonesome Dove"). WELL, IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE EVERY TIME HE DRAGS A DEAD BODY AROUND IT MAKES FOR GREAT CINEMA

37th Annual

NAACP Image Awards

Jamie Foxx's quest for musical stardom got a boost Saturday at the 37th Annual NAACP Image Awards, where the Oscar-winning actor was picked as best male musical artist.

"The Bernie Mac Show" took top honors in three categories. Mac was picked as comedy series best actor, while co-star Camille Winbush took home best supporting actress and director Millicent Shelton got the top television directing nod.

On his heels was comedian Chris Rock, whose life-story-based "Everybody Hates Chris" won best television series.

"Crash," about racial tensions in Los Angeles, took the top movie award. The hometown film led movie contenders with six nominations, including best picture, four of the five supporting-actor slots - for Terrence Howard, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Don Cheadle and Larenz Tate - and for Thandie Newton as supporting actress.

Port Security Concerns

Lou Dobbs

Since first reading in a British newspaper about a company from the United Arab Emirates taking over operations at six U.S. ports, CNN anchor Lou Dobbs has been on the story relentlessly - and making no secret how he feels about it.

"I see it, frankly, as an outrage against the national interest of the United States and I won't sugarcoat that at all," Dobbs said on his Tuesday newscast.

No one expected him to. One of television's best-known business journalists and the last CNN anchor who dates back to the network's formation in 1980, Dobbs has become a crusader on issues like free trade, immigration, national security and corporate greed.

A lifelong Republican, Dobbs has been at constant odds with the Bush administration, particularly for what he calls "contradictory and halfhearted efforts" on national security.

Human Rights Award in Chile

U2

Irish rock band U2 received Amnesty International's annual Ambassadors of Conscience award on Sunday in Chile's national stadium, which was once a notorious detention center for political prisoners.

Chilean President-elect Michelle Bachelet, herself a political prisoner in the 1970s, presented the award to U2 at a backstage ceremony prior to the band playing a concert.

Amnesty said it was recognizing band members Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, as well as their manager, Paul McGuinness, for using their music and celebrity to champion human rights causes for more than two decades.

Arrested in Drugs Probe

George Michael

British singer George Michael was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of possessing drugs after he was found slumped in a car in central London, a police source said.

Michael, 42, who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide during a 25-year career, was arrested in the Hyde Park area of the capital early on Sunday, the source said.

A London police spokesman issued a statement saying a 42-year-old man had been held on suspicion of possessing Class C drugs, a group in British law that includes cannabis, tranquilizers and some painkillers.

Likely Moving

Museum of Medical Oddities

On one shelf rests a giant hair ball that filled the stomach of a 12-year-old girl who compulsively chewed her hair. Floating in a nearby glass container is a young man's leg that ballooned in size because of elephantiasis.

This isn't a carnival freak show. The specimens are among thousands of medical oddities - many ghoulish - collected by the National Museum of Health and Medicine, which is dedicated to tracing the history and practice of medicine over the centuries.

But the museum, located on the 113-acre campus of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, likely will have to find a new home. Last summer, the Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to close the hospital and move many of its medical services to suburban Bethesda, Md., by 2011.

The commission does not indicate what will happen to the museum, other than to say it will not be "disestablished." Museum officials are also uncertain, though it's expected to move with the hospital to Bethesda.

150 Vie for Calling Title

Wild Turkey

Gobbles, clucks and coos spill out of the grand ballrooms, but there are no live turkeys on the floor of the Opryland Convention Center. Instead, about 150 men, women and children are doing their best imitations at the championship of turkey calling, the annual Grand National Wild Turkey Calling championships.

The National Wild Turkey Federation Convention that began this week brings some 40,000 hunters and exhibitors from across the nation to Nashville, but the spotlight is on the turkey callers.

This year's championships feature a new category - friction calling - for callers who produce the turkey sounds by rubbing objects together, typically a slate or a metal box that is scraped with a stick.

Then she saw smoke in the bedroom, got up and saw smoke coming from the basement.

Joey had found a home with the McDowalls after he was dumped off at a nearby mailbox awhile back. On Friday, he "really came in and sent the alarm," Bernice said.

In Memory

Rickie Layne

Rickie Layne, a ventriloquist who frequently appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" with his Yiddish-accented dummy Velvel, has died at the age of 81.

Singer Nat "King" Cole discovered Layne in 1955 at Ciro's nightclub on the Sunset Strip and urged Sullivan to put the act on his popular Sunday night variety show.

Cole even made an unusual guarantee: if Layne bombed, Cole would appear on the show for free.

Layne made his Sullivan debut on Jan. 1, 1956, and returned several dozen times. Sullivan was such a fan that he often got into the act himself, serving as straight man for the dummy that called the typically stone-faced host "Ed Solomon."

He was born Richard Israel Cohen, the son of Russian immigrants. His mother was a popular vaudeville comic billed as Gypsy Sonya. Layne began entertaining at age 9 and toured as a ventriloquist in his teens.

His wife of 56 years, LaRue, died in 2002. Layne is survived by three daughters and four granddaughters.

Welcome !

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.

(In other words, submissions are welcome.)
