Chilling Effects

"The forces of chastity are amassing once again," says sex researcher Alfred Kinsey in the film biography, Kinsey.
As if to prove that statement still applies, a couple of days before the movie opened, conservative groups announced plans to protest the glorification of a man they blame for the sexual revolution and, consequently, AIDS. The director of Concerned Women for America's Culture and Family Institute even compared Kinsey to Nazi madman Dr. Josef Mengele.
Which is all fine with me. That's the risk of free speech. Let them picket theaters and hand out leaflets until pigs fly, the cows come home and Hell freezes over, as long as the government isn't involved. Or, for that matter, the fear of government interference.
How chilling the effect must be when the latest fine by the FCC against a TV network--a record $1.2 million against Fox for its "sexually suggestive" Married By America - resulted from letters of complaint by only three individuals.
Jack Thompson, an attorney in Coral Gables with a reputation as an obsessive crusader against indecency, has filed a dozen complaints with the FCC about the Howard Stern Show, most recently concerning "The Howard Stern Amputee Beauty Contest." (I'd give my right arm to see that.) Thompson says that "this was so far over the line that the content constitutes not just 'indecency' but also 'profanity' as that legal term of art is used in such regulatory matters."
And now lawyer Thompson is indulging in quasi-extortion. In a letter to Sumner Redstone, chairman of Viacom, he states that he intends "to bring a civil action arising from the negligent supervision of the Viacom board in its failure to assure that the Howard Stern Show not libel people, not incite death threats against people and, most importantly, not air indecent material." But then comes his demand:
"I have only one requirement, and it must be done quickly. Fire Howard Stern. Terminate him now, and I go away. You know you can terminate him right now for his ongoing promotion, on the air, of his upcoming Sirius program. What he did in that regard yesterday on your air is beyond belief. You can dump him right now for that alone. Everyone knows he's been warned not to do that. Pull the trigger. Fire him. That gives you a 2-for-1 deal. You get rid of Stern and you get rid of Jack Thompson. I'll be much more of a pain than Howard Stern ever was. It's my job."
Meanwhile, Daily Variety reported, "Here are some late election returns: Local stations are running scared on program content....The scheduled preemptions [of Saving Private Ryan] come even though most, if not all, of the stations now balking at running Ryan have aired it in the past. Pic, which contains more than three dozen utterances of the word 'fuck' must air in its unedited form, as per ABC's license agreement with DreamWorks."
In 2002, responding to a complaint from censorship advocate Donald Wildmon, the FCC ruled that Saving Private Ryan was not indecent. But that was before the religious fanatics committed the worst of sins - pride - false pride in thinking that they've taken over the country.
Heathens of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your faith! Oops, never mind...

'The Christmas Song' Tops Survey

Nat 'King' Cole

Although it's been played many times, many ways, Nat "King" Cole's "The Christmas Song" rates as the most popular Christmas song in a survey of women ages 30-49.

Following Cole is Burl Ives' "A Holly Jolly Christmas," Celine Dion's "O Holy Night," Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" and John Lennon's "Happy X-mas (War Is Over)."

Charting as the most hated Christmas song? The rephrasing of "O Holy Night" by "South Park" character Eric Cartman.

Networks Bar Ads

United Church of Christ

Two leading U.S. television networks angered gay rights groups on Thursday by refusing to carry an ad by a church welcoming gays to their congregations, a message the networks found too controversial.

The United Church of Christ, a Protestant denomination which has about 1.3 million members, said the 30-second commercial was aimed at making gays feel included and they were disappointed by CBS and NBC's decision to reject it. Cable networks have accepted the ad.

In a written statement to the church, CBS, a unit of Viacom, said the fact that the Bush administration had proposed a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman made the advertisement "unacceptable for broadcast."

NBC said the ad violated a long-standing policy of the network not to allow commercials that dealt with issues of public controversy. NBC is part of NBC Universal, which is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co, with the rest owned by Vivendi Universal .

Alleged Stalker/Prayer Partner to Stand Trial

Mel Gibson

A 34-year-old drifter was ordered to stand trial for allegedly stalking Mel Gibson. Superior Court Judge Leland Harris ruled Thursday that there was enough evidence to try Zack Sinclair on a felony count of stalking. The defendant remained jailed on $500,000 bail pending a Dec. 16 arraignment.

Sinclair was arrested in September for investigation of stalking the actor-director. He allegedly went to the gate of Gibson's Malibu estate repeatedly that month after evading neighborhood security and asked to pray with the actor.

Sinclair was rearrested Oct. 7 after allegedly violating a court order to stay away from Gibson and his family.

In a court filing, Gibson said the man also interrupted his worship on Sept. 19 at a chapel and "demanded that I pray with him" before the filmmaker's bodyguard escorted him out.

Chicago Exhibit Features Tribal Artifacts

New Art Institute

A translucent, larger-than-life hand with long, tapering fingers lends an air of mystery to a new exhibit of ancient and little-known tribal art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The image of the open hand suggests communication between the human community and a world of spirits beyond, says exhibit curator Richard Townsend. But it's the ancient carving's origins that tell a less well-known story of how early North Americans lived, providing evidence of what once must have been an extensive trade network.

Although the hand was found in Ohio and is believed to have been made there some 2,000 years ago, it was cut from sheet mica that probably originated in North Carolina, Townsend said. Other artifacts in the exhibit - titled Hero, Hawk, and Open Hand: American Indian Art of the Ancient Midwest and South - were cut from seashells, hammered from Lake Superior copper, or chipped out of obsidian from the mountain West.

Hit Record Prices at London Sales

Russian Artwork

Prices for Russian works of art set a series of new records at auctions in London this week as rich Russians flexed their financial muscles.

Christie's and Sotheby's both reported hectic bidding dominated by Russian collectors seeking their own national heirlooms at sales on Tuesday and Wednesday, and new house MacDougall's expressed satisfaction at its own sale.

Top price of the sales went to Ivan Aivazovsky's "St Isaac's on a Frosty Day" which was knocked down for 1.12 million pounds -- a new auction record not only for the artist but for any 19th century Russian painting.

It was closely followed by Ilya Repin's "Study of a Family Portrait" which fetched 1.01 million pounds as time and again competitive bidding set new record prices for Russian paintings.

Shun 'Phil the Sore' Syphilis Ad

L.A. TV Stations

The group behind an anti-syphilis commercial starring an irascible chancre named "Phil the Sore" says it will file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission after Los Angeles broadcasters balked at airing the government-funded ad.

A spokesman for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which was rejected when it tried to run the ads during NBC's prime-time hit comedy "Will and Grace," and late-night programs, said the organization believes that affiliates were afraid to run afoul of the U.S. broadcast regulator.

In the commercial two shirtless men meet at a bar and go home together. They part the following morning, one clad only in underwear and an open bathrobe, as the blob-like pustule character "Phil" moves in -- bringing several friends toting boxes that read "brain damage," "rash" and "HIV pusher."

The commercials, which were funded by Los Angeles County's health agency, aired on cable channels during the summer.

Nearly Half Unaware of Auschwitz

Britons

Nearly half of Britons in a poll said they had never heard of Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp in southern Poland that became a symbol of the Holocaust and the attempted genocide of the Jews.

The results of the survey conducted by the BBC were released on Thursday as Britain's public broadcaster announced it will show a new series next January to mark the 60th anniversary of the concentration camp's liberation.

The survey found that 45 percent of those surveyed had not heard of Auschwitz. Historians estimate that anywhere from one million to three million people, about 90 percent of them Jews, were killed there.

Mona Van Duyn

America's first female poet laureate Mona Van Duyn, once described as a pioneer of the poetry of the suburbs, has died in St. Louis at the age of 83, her publisher Alfred A. Knopf said on Thursday.

Born May 9, 1921 in Waterloo, Iowa, Van Duyn started writing poetry secretly in notebooks while she was at grade school and was a voracious reader. Recalling her small town childhood, Van Duyn said in a 1991 interview: "One was made to stay after school and learn a poem."

In 1970 her collection of poems "To See, To Take" won the National Book Award and in 1991 she was awarded the Pulitzer for "Near Changes." She was poet laureate from 1992 to 1993.

Her most recent book "Selected Poems" was published in 2002, a collection of work from three decades including verses dealing with apparently mundane subjects such as renewing a driving license or a puppy.

Van Duyn was co-founder and editor of the literary magazine Perspective, and published her first book "Valentines to the Wide World" in 1959.

Kevin Coyne

British singer-songwriter, painter, writer, and rock 'n' roller extraordinaire Kevin Coyne passed away today (December 2) at his home in Nuremberg, Germany. He was 60 years old.

While Coyne remained a cult figure in the U.S., throughout Europe he was a revered, legendary, and--with more than 40 releases--wildly prolific artist. Coyne's music was rooted in the blues, but he used it as a jumping-off point to venture into nearly every genre imaginable, from sentimental love songs and full-on rockers to catchy pop songs and twisted ballads. His lyrics--always improvised on the spot--were full of vivid and wild imagery, and his voice was one of the most powerful and distinctive in all of rock. Coyne was "discovered" by the late John Peel and, in 1971, when Doors frontman Jim Morrison died, Coyne was asked to fill his shoes.

Although Coyne was diagnosed with lung fibrosis two years ago, he continued to tour, record, paint. and write. His most recent record, Donut City, his best in years, was the first release on his own Turpentine Records.
