Molly Ivins: 'Blessed stubbornness' (smirkingchimp.com)
I am writing about the most extraordinary book by the most extraordinary woman, and I would have interviewed her at length, except she's going to be arrested if she ever sets foot back in our home state.
Andrew Weil: Age successfully, and gracefully (usatoday.com)
Q: Your book is full of recommendations on how to age successfully. If you had 30 seconds in an elevator to give someone advice on what to do to age successfully, what would you tell them?
A: Learn the principles of healthy eating, increase physical activity, learn to breathe properly, try to learn another language, spend more time in the company of people who have lifestyle habits you want to develop, and think about the rewards that aging can bring.
"So, does anybody remember how President Bush survived the Valerie Wilson scandal?"
"Oh! Oh! Mr. Kotter! Mr. Kotter! I know, Mr. Kotter. President Bush nominated Patrick Fitzgerald to the Supreme Court, thereby bolloxing the investigation into his aides."
"Arnold, you doofus, President Bush didn't have AIDS."
"Not AIDS, Vinnie. Aides. It's spelled with an E."
"Huh, huh. Mr. Kotter. AIDS is spelled with an A. You ain't foolin' me."
"Sheesh! Anyway, Arnold. President Bush didn't nominate Patrick Fitzgerald, although he probably should have. That would have been a brilliant stroke. You ought to consider politics Arnold. You'd be good at it."
"Gee, tanks Mr. Kotter. My mother says I should be so lucky."
"What about me, Mr. Kotter? You think I'd make a good president?"
"Vinnie, you'd have made an admirable president. Only you ended up becoming a Scientologist."
"What's wrong wid dat?"
"Nothing, if you plan to become president of Alpha Centauri."
"Really? So, is that, like, in the United States or what?"
"You should have run in 2000, Vinnie. You'd have been a shoe-in."

B-list Hollywood celebrities from "it" girl Paris Hilton to actor Tom Sizemore are finding that, far from being a kiss of death, the release of their home-made sex videos can be a big career boost.
While "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson and her rocker husband Tommy Lee fought tooth and nail to keep their sex romps private, they inadvertently launched a new trend that some lesser stars are now happy to feed as celebrity nookie becomes a growing niche in the X-rated movie industry.
Gone are the days when actors feared that photographs in flagrante delicto could ruin their careers, as did screen heartthrob Rob Lowe when he was filmed cavorting with an underage girl in 1988.

Everyone knows about the Somme and Verdun. But the eastern front of World War I was deadly as well. Now, a blogger in Estonia has placed over 120 photos, most of them previously unpublished, on the Web.
The famous, bloody battlefields of World War I were in "the West" -- meaning west of Germany -- but not everyone died in the trenches of Belgium and France. German soldiers marched east, too, through land that now lies in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Russia. A German blogger in Estonia named Jens-Olaf Walter has posted a Flickr series of remarkable and mostly unpublished photographs from this "forgotten front" of the Great War, once the property of a single (unnamed) German officer. Trenches, corpses, gunfire, peasants, mosques and farm villages all rise like fading ghosts from the photos.
George Takei is recognized around the world as Mr. Hikaru Sulu, a character he played on three seasons of the TV show Star Trek and in six subsequent films. Takei's portrayal of Sulu is a watershed moment in television history-never had an Asian-American actor played such a prominent role in the national media, certainly not without a marginalizing accent or stereotypical job as a chef or servant or cook. In fact, Takei's clear, booming voice and perfectly enunciated English as he helmed the U.S.S. Enterprise, flew in the face of traditional Asian male stereotypes prevalent even up to that time on TV and in film.
What many may not know is that Takei, 68, has been a passionate activist for civil-rights and a community leader for many years. He is chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of the Japanese American National Museum, is on the advisory committee of the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, and even ran for L.A. City Council in 1973, losing by only a small margin. An L.A. native, he was appointed to the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District by former L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley, and to the board of the Japan-United States Friendship Commission by President Bill Clinton.

Although both marijuana and tobacco smoke are packed with cancer-causing chemicals, other qualities of marijuana seem to keep it from promoting lung cancer, according to a new report.
The difference rests in the often opposing actions of the nicotine in tobacco and the active ingredient, THC, in marijuana, says Dr. Robert Melamede of the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
Whereas nicotine has several effects that promote lung and other types of cancer, THC acts in ways that counter the cancer-causing chemicals in marijuana smoke, Melamede explained in an interview with Reuters Health.
