Purple Gene Reviews
'Rear Window'
Purple Gene's review of the movie "Rear Window" (1954) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock:
I just dragged my Nikon digital D2H camera into my office and I was getting ready to download the images from my 1Gb card onto the computer… when I noticed that someone at TCM (Turner Classic Movies) decided to make it "Shutterbug Night" …a "Voyeur's delight"…alright….this kind of programming is really hilarious…catch this line-up:
"Picture Snatcher" (1933) ..Jimmy Cagney as a snappy newspaper PHOTOGRAPHER !
"I Love Melvin" (1953)..Donald O'Connor as a Look magazine PHOTOGRAPHER !
"Blowup" (1966)..David Hemmings as a London fashion PHOTOGRAPHER !
"Live a Little, Love a Little" (1968)..Elvis Presley as a Press PHOTOGRAPHER !
And Finally………………….
"Rear Window" (1954)..Jimmy Stewart as a Freelance PHOTOGRAPHER !
Being a PHOTOGRAPHER and a VOYEUR…..I decided to stick with "Rear Window"
L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries (James Stewart - "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" - "It's a Wonderful Life" - "Broken Arrow") is a professional PHOTOGRAPHER who breaks his leg getting an "action" shot at an auto race! So he gets stuck in his New York apartment, confined to wheel-chair. He starts to spend his time staring out his rear window into all the other apartments…..and there is a lot to look at. Besides the wanna be piano player (yes, of 'The Chipmunks' fame) and the lonely cat lover and the shapely dancer and the newly weds and the couple who sleep on the fire escape with their yapping dog …..there is the strange salesman with the nagging wheel-chair bound wife…..who disappears in the middle of the night…..
Jeff calls his high society model girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly - "High Noon" - "High Society" - "Princess Grace of Monaco") and his nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter - "Titanic" - "Pillow Talk" - "The Misfits") to come over and stare out the window with him…with a telephoto lens……
Things get stranger and stranger and Jeff gets more and more suspicious and then one night he sees the salesman dragging something out in a trunk (could it be the body).
This movie builds and builds at a beautiful pace as all the "apartment people" get caught up in the suspicion and intrigue…..
I often find myself peeking out my window at neighbors or passer bys and sometimes I feel a little dirty for secretly sneaking a look at people when I know they can't see me. I love to photograph subjects in action without them suspecting I am watching. "Rear Window" was a fitting Dénouement to "Shutterbug Night" ….
Purple Gene gives "Rear Window" 10 seedy clicks of the camera out of 10 for bringing out the Voyeur in me!

Corporation for (Re)Public(can) Broadcasting
Patricia S. Harrison
The Corporation for (Re)Public(an) Broadcasting, already embroiled in controversy over allegations of a liberal-leaning bias in PBS programming, chose a former Republican Party co-chairman Thursday as its president and chief executive.
Patricia S. Harrison, the assistant secretary of state for educational and cultural affairs, was selected following three days of closed-door meetings by the corporation's board of directors.
Democratic lawmakers last week urged the CPB to put off choosing a new president, citing concerns about political interference by the corporation's chairman, Kenneth Y. Tomlinson. A Republican, Tomlinson, has been critical of public affairs programming at PBS, alleging that it's too liberal.
The corporation, which was set up by Congress in 1967 to shield public broadcasting from political influence, funnels federal dollars to PBS, National Public Radio and hundreds of public radio and television stations.

Shed Light On Patriot Act
Librarians
The Bush administration says officials have not demanded records from libraries or bookstores, but the American Library Association says that's not the case
US law enforcement officials have made at least 200 formal and informal inquiries to libraries for information on reading material and other internal matters since October 2001, according to a new study that adds grist to the growing debate in Congress over the government's counterterrorism powers.
In some cases, agents used subpoenas or other formal demands to obtain information like lists of users checking out a book on Osama bin Laden. Other requests were informal -- and were sometimes turned down by librarians who chafed at the notion of turning over such material, said the American Library Association (ALA), which commissioned the study.
The association, which is pushing to scale back the government's powers to gain information from libraries, said its US$300,000 study was the first to examine a question that was central to a House of Representatives vote last week on the USA Patriot Act: how frequently federal, state and local agents are demanding records from libraries.

Reprieve For Big Bird
Public Broadcasting
Big Bird and National Public Radio won a reprieve Thursday as the House restored $100 million that had been proposed as a budget cut for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The 284-140 vote demonstrated the enduring political strength of public broadcasting, whose supporters rallied behind popular programs such as "Sesame Street," "Postcards From Buster" and "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer."

Embargo On Reviews
'War of the Worlds'
German film critics are up in arms over Paramount's worldwide embargo on reviews of Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" until the film's day-and-date release next Wednesday.
In an open letter, the German association of film critics called on its members to protest the "War of the Worlds" embargo by publicizing details of the studio's demands and criticizing the distributor's no-review policy. The association also called on its members to violate any future embargoes or to refuse to review films where an embargo is imposed.
Consumer press review embargoes are standard policy for all Paramount films in the U.S. (Trade reviews occasionally run earlier when the studio chooses to run so-called "quote ads" in its advertising.) The studio has extended that policy for "War of the Worlds," which is its largest ever worldwide day-and-date release.
'War of the Worlds'
No advance press, and the largest ever worldwide day-and-date release?
Sounds more like code for 'big stinker' - as in maximize profits on opening weekend because there ain't gonna be much demand in the following weeks.
Could it be the next 'Howard The Duck' or 'Battlefield Earth'?

More EIB - Excrement In Broadcasting
WLTO-102.5 FM
A Lexington woman who says she was jilted by a WLTO-102.5 FM contest filed a lawsuit yesterday against Cumulus Media Inc., which owns Hot 102 and four other local stations.
The complaint, filed in Fayette Circuit Court, says the radio station and its Atlanta-based parent company breached a contract to pay $100,000 after a radio contest prize was revealed to be a caramel-filled candy bar, Nestle's 100 Grand, instead of cash.
On May 25, night host DJ Slick said he wanted to thank people who listened throughout the American Idol finale by sponsoring a contest to "win 100 grand." "No joke," the host's Web blog said of the contest.
FCC regulations say contest descriptions can't be false, misleading or deceptive and that stations must conduct the contests as advertised. Stations in El Paso, Texas, and Shreveport, La., have been fined for contests that told listeners they'd won cash prizes without specifying they were in Italian or Turkish lira, not U.S. dollars.

Filming Fee Hike
Hawaii
Hawaii's popularity as a film location is still growing. The hit ABC series "Lost" is boosting the profile of the state, which already has served as a location for Fox's "North Shore," NBC's "Hawaii" and the WB pilot "Rocky Point." Last year proved a record year for the islands, which attracted $161 million in direct production expenditures.
But a new move by the Honolulu City Council could threaten continued growth of this robust film scene.
The council has just unveiled a budget that levies a commercial filming fee of $300 a day (up from a nominal $10 a day) for major national and nonlocal film and TV filming in city parks or recreational facilities. (Honolulu's jurisdiction extends to the island of Oahu, where most of Hawaii's filming takes place.)

Admits 'Poor Judgment'
Randy "Duke" Cunningham
Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R - Dietician) said Thursday he showed poor judgment in selling his house to a defense contractor who later took a big loss on it. But the California Republican said he acted honestly and predicted an investigation would prove that.
It was his first public accounting of his relationship with defense contractor Mitchell Wade since news of the real estate deal surfaced nearly two weeks ago.
Wade paid $1.7 million in November 2003 for the 3,826-square-foot house in wealthy, seaside Del Mar, just north of San Diego. He put it back on the market soon after and eventually took a $700,000 loss when he resold it in October 2004. During that span, home prices in San Diego County rose an average of nearly 25 percent.
Meanwhile, Wade's little-known company, Washington, D.C.-based MZM Inc., was increasing its federal contracting business. In 2004, MZM tripled its revenue and nearly quadrupled its staff, according to the company's Web site.
Cunningham also contended he acted properly in living part time on Wade's boat, which is docked on the Potomac River in Washington.

Shuts Chat Rooms
Yahoo
Yahoo Inc, the most-used Internet site, has shut down all its user-created Internet chat rooms amid concerns that adults were using the sites to try to have sex with minors.
The giant Internet media company closed down those chat rooms and the ability to create new ones "in the past week," said Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako.
Chat rooms created and sponsored by Yahoo itself remain open, Osako said. The number of user-created chat rooms is variable at any given time and Yahoo does not track that figure, she said.

A one-month-old Siberian lynx looks out from foliage at the San Diego Zoo June 22, 2005. Born on exhibit, the kitten had not been visible until this week, when it has become more mobile. The mother, Skyy, has been very protective of the kitten, not allowing zookeepers to examine its gender or even allowing the kitten to get far from her as it begins to explore its surroundings. Siberian lynx can weigh 40 to 80 pounds when full grown. Also known as the Eurasian lynx, this species can be found in Asia, Europe and former USSR.
