Just saw the new Tom Cruise flick MI-3 and it was a fun diversion for 2 hours. Lots of guns and explosions and action and the inevitable love story. I recommend it.
Ted Rall: Bush Could Ease Pain at the Pump--If He Wanted (news.yahoo.com)
When Americans went to the polls on Election Day 2004, nearly 51 percent pulled the lever, punched a chad or touched a screen for George W. Bush. Only 32 percent of the electorate would do the same today. What changed the minds of 23 million people?
Jacob Heilbrunn: The Great Conservative Crackup: What National Review wrought (washingtonmonthly.com)
In reality, though, conservatism hasn't really changed all that much. The Christian right has certainly infused it with moralism and anti-Darwin mumbo-jumbo, but what's more striking about the GOP over the past 100 years or so is its continuity. The party's main, almost sole, purpose has been to ensure that as much money as possible goes to those who need it least and that as little as possible goes to those who need it most.
Sarah Boseley: Recipe for a ripe old age: fruit and veg, exercise, no smoking (guardian.co.uk)
It's a simple recipe, but it could add 11 years to your life, possibly more. A study by Cambridge University on behalf of the Department of Health has calculated the formula for longevity. Giving up smoking means an extra five years, moderate exercise three more. Add to that another three by eating five portions of fruit and veg a day. For couch potatoes, a pear a day could make a difference too.
Study finds more serious illness despite greater U.S. spending
Middle-aged, white Americans are much sicker than their counterparts in England, startling new research shows, despite U.S. health care spending per person that's more than double what England spends.

After 24 hours and some 11,000 votes - by a long shot Gawker's most popular poll ever - the answer is clear: Stephen Colbert's White House Correspondents' Dinner performance was one of the most patriotic acts you've witnessed of any individual.
Was Stephen Colbert's White House Correspondents' Dinner performance...
"One of the most patriotic acts I've witnessed of any individual," or 87.9% (9701 votes)
Not really that funny? 12.1% (1341 votes)
11042 total votes. results as of 05/04/2006 08:52:19 pm.
Naturally, that 75 percent margin of victory proves - proves, damn it - Colbert's patriotic genius. No chance of a selection bias among Gawker readers. No chance at all.

A publicist for Barry Humphries, who has played the purple-haired Dame Edna since the 1950s, confirmed Wednesday that Humphries had hit photographer Malcolm Ladd.
"Poor Barry, desperate for publicity as usual," read an e-mail statement issued Thursday by publicist Suzie Howie in Dame Edna's name.
"Luckily I wasn't there, but I'm told he didn't deliberately hit the poor photographer but was pushing the camera away and his knuckles accidentally grazed the poor chap's cheeks," Dame Edna's statement said.
"I've never pushed a camera away. The papps (paparazzi) can invade my space whenever they like. I adore them, especially this little chap, because I've always had a weakness for ponytails. Call me old-fashioned. I'm sending Barry off for counseling. He is a rageaholic and a tragic attention seeker."

Footballers' Wives has been axed after five years of over-the-top goings-on at Earls Park FC.
ITV drama has decided not to commission a sixth series of the infamous show.
Footballers' Wives began life as a cult classic when it was launched on ITV1 in 2001. The show launched the careers of the likes of Zoe Lucker, who played the insatiable superbitch Tanya Turner, and Gary Lucy (Kyle Pascoe).
Brian Park, managing director of Shed Productions, the independent company behind the show, said "Although Footballers' Wives has come to an end in the UK, it goes from strength to strength internationally. It continues to do well on BBC America and we have just signed a deal to take the series into South America which is a natural home for Footballers' Wives."

Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars films on DVD.
Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have held out hope for DVDs of the originals.
Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy).
The individual DVDs will be taken off the market on Dec. 31, a strategy that Disney uses on many of its classic releases.
What do you say about an airline screening system that tends to mistake government employees and U.S. servicemen for foreign terrorists?
Newly released government documents show that even having a high-level security clearance won't keep you off the Transportation Security Administration's Kafkaesque terrorist watch list, where you'll suffer missed flights and bureaucratic nightmares.
According to logs from the TSA's call center from late 2004 -- which black out the names of individuals to protect their privacy -- the watch list has snagged:
A State Department diplomat who protested that "I fly 100,00 miles a year and am tired of getting hassled at Dulles airport -- and airports worldwide -- because my name apparently closely resembles that of a terrorist suspect."

A high-ranking government employee with a better-than-top-secret clearance who is also a U.S. Army Reserve major.

"Brokeback Mountain" co-star Randy Quaid has dropped a lawsuit over his compensation for the Academy Award-winning film.
Quaid had sued Focus Features and producers David Linde and James Schamus in March, claiming he was fleeced into working cheaply by the filmmakers' assertion that "Brokeback Mountain" was "a low-budget, art-house film, with no prospect of making any money."
Quaid had been seeking at least $10 million. His publicist, Susan Madore, said Thursday that Quaid decided to drop the lawsuit after his lawyers told him Focus agreed to pay him a bonus, which he wants to split with other principal cast members.
Focus Features denied making any settlement with Quaid.
A handout photo released on May 4, 2006 by the Census of Marine Life (CoML) shows an 'Atlanta peroni', a type of pteropod which was discovered by scientists trawling rarely explored tropical ocean depths. Scientists have found about 10-20 new species of tiny creatures in the depths of the Atlantic in a survey that will gauge whether global warming may harm life in the oceans, an international report said on Thursday.

Hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine website reported.
According to online magazine www.zsaru.hu, workers in Szeged in the south of Hungary tried to move the barrel after they had drained it, only to find it was surprisingly heavy and were shocked when the body of a naked man fell out.
The website said that the body of the man had been shipped back from Jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return.
According to the website, workers said the rum in the 300-liter barrel had a "special taste" so they even decanted a few bottles of the liquor to take home.

A portrait by Pablo Picasso of the woman who influenced him in the late 1930s and early 1940s sold for $95.2 million, the second-highest amount ever paid for a painting at auction, the auction house Sotheby's said.
"Dora Maar au chat," which depicts Picasso's mistress, went to an anonymous buyer in the room who was competing with telephone bidders during Wednesday's auction.
Its selling price ranked second only to another Picasso piece, "Garcon a la pipe," which sold at Sotheby's for more than $104 million in May 2004, the auction house said.
