Re: Marx Brothers

A quick ratings system for Marx Friday on TCM:

  1. Monkey Business - As one writer put it. In this movie the Brothers run nothing but amok

  2. Duck Soup - Better than the horror show we have in Washington now

  3. Horsefeathers - Chico shines in this one.

  4. A Night at the Opera - High class Marx. An oxymoron.

  5. Animal Crackers - Live on film.

  6. A Day at the Races - Their last great one.

  7. The Cocoanuts - Excellent job but the production quality was pretty bad in this one. Look for the camera to begin panning before Groucho moves when he says "Here front"

  8. Room Service - The Marxs as straight actors.

  9. At the Circus - Buster Keaton was a $50 a week gag man on this. No wonder he drank.

 10. Go West - Tune in for the last five minutes for the best sequence.

 11. The Big Store - Should have been called "The Bargin Basement" (Okay, I stole that line. So sue me.)

Thanks, Mr. Hawk!
Don't forget to watch for the 'All God's Children Got War' sequence in 'Duck Soup'.

Purple Gene Reviews

'Sin City'

Purple Gene's review of the movie "Sin City" (2005) directed by Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino:

What's Black and White…..and Red all over?????? The new graphic novel/comic book/gangster noir/gritty novella/great narrative amazing MOVIE…."SIN CITY". Of course the old punch line to this question was "A nun being run over by a truck"!!!! This film was like all my sensibilities and niceties being mangled by a MACK! This is groundbreaking and thrilling cinema…..for those with the stomach for sexy whores, grimy cigarette smoking super heroes and a 1957 Chevy Nomad station wagon on steroids!

Detective Hartigan (Bruce Willis - "Die Hard" - "Pulp Fiction" - "Unbreakable") is a good cop with a bad "ticker" at the end of his career and at the end of a pier trying to save a little 11 year old girl from the sadistic molesting clutches of the sick senators son, Junior Rourk (Nick Stahl - "Bully" - "Taboo" - "Wasted" - "Carnivale")…but Hartigan helps the girl get away by removing Juniors DICK! but he pays the price and goes to prison for a long time….

Marv (Mickey Rourke - "Wild Orchid" - "Body Heat" - "Nine ½ Weeks") is a big ugly bruiser who gets lucky with a dame….Goldie (Jaime King - "Blow" - "White Chicks" - "Slackers") and takes her home to a RED heart shaped bed and makes graphic LOVE to her….trouble is…it's a set-up….Goldie's dead, Marv is drunk and the COPS are on their way…..who's after Marv? Well the narrative is right out of Mickey Spillane and Raymond Chandler and Marv heads down to "Old Towne"…to the "Gin Joints" and starts "Killing his way to the Truth"……..

Dwight (Clive Owen - "Bad Boy Blues" - "Bent" - "The Hire: Ambush") is a loser on the LAM and his bar maid girl friend Shelley (Brittany Murphy - "Clueless" - "Freeway" - "8 Mile") is being harassed by a dirty cop named Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro - "Fearless" - "Traffic" - "21 Grams") and his gang….well Dwight is tough and takes Jackie Boy down after an amazing car chase by cutting his head off…..with the help of the Old Towne gang of pugilistic prostitutes….but the cops keep coming to get Dwight and Shelley………

8 Years later Hartigan gets out of prison and finds out that little Nancy has been growing up and she is 19 year old Nancy (Jessica Alba - "Flipper" - "Venus Rising" - "Dark Angel) and a dancer down at the club. She is in love with Hartigan and things get complicated because the Senator's son who wanted to molest little Nancy has morphed into the "Yellow Bastard" and wants to make Nancy scream as he tortures and kills her but the good cop with the bad ticker is going to stop him and STOMP him……

Marv finds out that Goldie had a twin sister and together they crash a smash their way to getting even with the evil mob that killed Goldie…

Dwight gets pulled out of the Tar Pits and saves Shelley….

This is Stunning Visual Cinema and 2 plus hours of voyeurism, violence and vicious justice is not enough time…I could have taken 2 more hours of this fantastic filming….

Purple Gene gives "Sin City" 10 beautiful black and white ass cheeks out of 10 to a movie that holds nothing back…great fucking FLICK!!!!!

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Overcast, cool & windy.

The local TV stations are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for pope-related stories. Tonight, the ABC/Disney affiliate billboarded 'the woman who hugged the pope,' then compounded the crappy coverage by sending a child-reporter to Rome. A child-reporter who not only seems to think he coined the phrase "This'll gonna blow your mind", but drops it in every 'report'. Gag.

Anybody catch Patricia Heaton (R-Delusional Catholic) on Leno last night? She explained that she wasn't prodding her boys toward college - that college educations are highly over-rated.

Guess rich, uneducated kids can't be cannon-fodder like poor kids (regardless of education).

Speaking of a California education - there are close to 250 kids in the 6th grade at the kid's middle school. Guess how many math books there are for all of the 6th grade?

40.

The kids get workbooks, but the textbooks must remain in the classroom.

The workbooks don't contain examples, only problems to be solved. The examples are in the textbooks that can't leave the classroom.

Luckily I'm pretty good with numbers, but I'm not the typical parent at this school.

And unlike Patty Heaton, I expect my son to go to college.

A 25-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology student has invented a revolutionary alarm clock 'clocky,' in this undated photo, that falls to the floor and rolls away on the first push of the snooze button. To turn it off, a person must get out of bed and find it. The clock features two rubber wheels and is covered in thick, 1970s-style shag carpet and other material to cushion it when it tumbles to the floor.

CBS, Jon Stewart Win

Peabody Awards

CBS News won a Peabody Award on Thursday for its report on abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, a story anchored by Dan Rather and produced by Mary Mapes, who was later fired by CBS for her role in the story about resident Bush's military service.

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart won his second Peabody Award, for his satiric take on the 2004 election campaign, while HBO's Western "Deadwood" also won.

The George Foster Peabody awards, for broadcasting excellence in both news and entertainment, are given by the University of Georgia. Thirty-two awards will be handed out at the ceremony May 16.

CNBC won its first-ever Peabody for an insider's look at Wal-Mart, and the networks Trio, Link TV and Univision were also first-time winners.

HBO won three awards. Besides "Deadwood," the pay cable outlet was honored for "Beah: A Black Woman Speaks," a biography of actress Beah Richards, and "Something the Lord Made," a documentary about two men who fight racial prejudice doing pioneering work on heart surgery in the South in 1944.

Protesting War Again

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda was on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" Wednesday night and Letterman asked how she feels about the war in Iraq. Fonda got a big hand from Letterman's audience when she said, "I think the war is wrong. I think it's a mistake and I think we that should get out."

Letterman had just held up the infamous photo of Fonda sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. Fonda, who is promoting her autobiography, "My Life So Far," said she is the "lightning rod" for the still open wounds of the Vietnam war and she feels "sad about that."

Fonda told Letterman her image as Hanoi Jane is a creation of ideologues to "promulgate their right wing, narrow world view. It really doesn't have anything to do with me and it's kind of sick."

Celebrities Invited

Charles' Wedding

Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles plan to celebrate their wedding with friends and family. In their case, that includes movie and TV stars, kings, queens, princes - and an actress who has played two British monarchs on stage and screen.

Entertainers include ribald comedian Joan Rivers, a friend of the couple, as well as Joanna Lumley, best known for playing gin-soaked aging model Patsy on "Absolutely Fabulous." Also invited are actors Kenneth Branagh and Richard E. Grant, "Rumpole of the Bailey" author John Mortimer and veteran broadcaster David Frost.

Figures from the music world include Jools Holland, former keyboard player in 1980s band Squeeze, and actress Trudi Styler, wife of superstar Sting. Both Styler and Holland are supporters of Charles' Princes Trust charity.

Shakespearean actor Timothy West will read verses from Wordsworth at the blessing.

Also on the guest list is his wife, Prunella Scales. Although she's best known to comedy fans as Sybil Fawlty in 1970s sitcom "Fawlty Towers," Scales also has made a specialty of royal roles.

Mormon Practice Upsets Jewish Leaders

Posthumous Baptisms

Jewish leaders claim Mormons continue to posthumously baptize Jews and Holocaust victims, and will confront church leaders with a decade of frustration over what they call broken promises.

The Mormon church has long collected names from government documents and other records worldwide for posthumous baptisms. Church members stand in for the deceased non-Mormons, a ritual the church says is required for the dead to reach heaven. The church believes individuals' ability to choose a religion continues beyond the grave.

A 1995 agreement signed by Jewish leaders and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called for an immediate halt to unwanted proxy baptisms. After evidence was found in the church's massive International Genealogical Index that the baptisms for many Jews - including Anne Frank - continued, the two faiths reaffirmed the agreement in 2002.

Under the Mormon practice, most Catholic popes have been proxy baptized, as have historical figures like Ghengis Khan, Joan of Arc, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Buddha, according to Helen Radkey, an independent genealogical researcher in Salt Lake City.

However, the church directed its members after 1995 to not include for baptism the names of Jewish Holocaust victims, celebrities and people who aren't relatives.

British Theme Park

'Dickensworld'

A theme park based on the life and work of author Charles Dickens is to be built in Britain, one of the men behind "Dickensworld" said Thursday.

The $113 million project will recreate the Victorian era when young children worked in sweatshops, Britain ruled over a vast empire and Dickens penned classic works like "Bleak House" and "The Pickwick Papers."

The roofed attraction is part of the regeneration of old docks in the southeastern county of Kent, close to where the author lived as a child in the early 19th century.

Gay Soldier Wants to Serve Openly

Robert Stout

An Army sergeant who was wounded in Iraq wants a chance to remain in the military as an openly gay soldier, a desire that's bringing him into conflict with the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Sgt. Robert Stout, 23, says he has not encountered trouble from fellow soldiers and would like to stay if not for the policy that permits gay men and women to serve only if they keep their sexual orientation a secret.

Stout, of Utica, Ohio, was awarded the Purple Heart after a grenade sent pieces of shrapnel into his arm, face and legs while he was operating a machine gun on an armored Humvee last May.

Stout, who served in Iraq for more than a year as a combat engineer, said by acknowledging he is gay, he could be jailed and probably will be discharged before his scheduled release date of May 31.

Long-Lost Arrangements Found

Ludwig van Beethoven

Five arrangements of Scottish and Irish folk songs by Ludwig van Beethoven, including Highland Harry by Robert Burns, have emerged in a private collection.

The rare musical manuscript, in Beethoven's own hand, dates from 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo. Part of a series of tunes commissioned by an Edinburgh publisher, George Thomson, they are now up for auction and expected to sell for about £400,000.

Beethoven's score for Highland Harry - whose chorus Burns picked up "from an old woman in Dunblane" - was described by one expert yesterday as a jaunty piece that used a bass "drone" to give a folksy feel.

The 12 leaves of paper are stitched together with the original twine, said Thomas Venning, a manuscript specialist at Christie's. "It is as it left Beethoven's desk."

In Memory

Dale Messick

Dale Messick, whose long-running comic strip "Brenda Starr, Reporter" gave her entry into the male world of the funny pages, has died at age 98.

Messick, whose strip ran in 250 newspapers at its peak in the 1950s, died Tuesday, said her daughter, Starr Rohrman, who had been caring for her mother in Sonoma County.

Messick - who jettisoned her given name Dalia to further her career - once said Brenda had "everything I didn't have." But she charmed acquaintances with spunk and style worthy of her redheaded creation.

Mixing hot copy with high fashion, Brenda plunged from one thrilling adventure to another, sassing her tough-talking editor, Mr. Livwright, and sometimes filing her copy with the only person left in the newsroom, the cleaning woman.

Young women looked at Brenda and dreamed of adventure. Young men liked the strip, too, and quite a few, thinking they were dealing with one of the boys, asked "Dale" for private sketches of Brenda in sexier poses than a family newspaper could bear. Messick obliged once by sending back a saucy picture of Brenda in a barrel going over Niagara Falls. Attached was a note: "Is this daring enough?"

Born in South Bend, Ind., on April 11, 1906, Messick studied art and got a job at one greeting card company and then another, working on her strips at night.

Her break came when her work came to the attention of publisher Joseph M. Patterson. Patterson, reputed to be no fan of women cartoonists, wouldn't take the slot for daily publication but it began running in the Sunday comics in 1940.

Messick retired from the strip in 1985. It is still running, now written by Mary Schmich and drawn by June Brigman.

Messick received the National Cartoonist Society's Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. In old age, Messick moved to Northern California to be near her daughter and two grandchildren, Curt and Laura. She joked about writing her autobiography, "Still Stripping at 80" - never completed but retitled a decade later to "Still Stripping at 90." She did write a single-panel strip "Granny Glamour" until age 92.

Messick had a stroke in 1998, her daughter said. "She just went into a decline after that. She couldn't draw anymore," Rohrman said.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.

(In other words, submissions are welcome.)
