In The Chaos Household
Last Night
High 80s on the coast.
The purpose of the Orange County cousin's visit was to announce her older son has enlisted in the Air Force - he leaves in October. She was proud, angry, upset, feeling old and beyond words.
Ran out to the Valley to see Uncle Jimmy today - was just over 100°. Coulda been worse - was 114° in Palm Springs.
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (L) is joined by New York Mercantile Exchange Chairman Mitchell Steinhause as she rings the opening bell on trading in global crude oil futures, at the NYMEX August 10, 2004. Crude oil futures see-sawed early as traders weighed storm-related precautions taken by Shell in the Gulf of Mexico against news that Iraq's exports from Basra would resume by August 11. In early trading NYMEX September crude was down 16 cents at $44.68 a barrel.

Remake of 1960s Hit to Mobilize Voters
'Wake Up Everybody'
Putting a current spin on a 1960s hit, anti-Bush musicians Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott and Eve are remaking "Wake Up Everybody" to mobilize new voters.
In 1976, Democrats blasted the song by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes to court black voters to back Jimmy Carter's first White House bid. Today, the artists are recording the remake, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds announced Tuesday. An album will be available next month.
Sales of the album, which also includes songs by Yoko Ono, Marvin Gaye and Linda Rondstadt, will benefit America Coming Together, a voter mobilization group opposed to resident Bush.
In 2000, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes performed at the Republican National Convention.

New Exhibition
Jimi Hendrix
He took the world by storm in the 1960s, and now 34 years after his death guitar king Jimi Hendrix is to come blazing back in a new exhibition including unreleased music and unseen footage of his performances.
The show which opens at London's Marquee Club next month, is based on a collection of memorabilia put together by an American fan and features thousands of items worth 15 million pounds ($27.6 million).
Among the top items will be unseen footage of Hendrix at the Woodstock, Monterey and Isle of Wight festivals. The Monterey performance, with the image of Hendrix holding his burning guitar aloft, became emblematic of his wild spirit and energy.

FCC Clears 'Buffy,' 'Grace'
Charges of Indecency
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Will & Grace" passed the indecency test at the FCC on Monday as the agency rejected complaints against the popular TV shows filed by two conservative-leaning interest groups.
The complaints filed by the Parent Television Council and Americans for Decency were dismissed in a 5-0 vote because the commission found the shows didn't violate its indecency regulations. Both shows were aired in primetime.

Coming Aboard Troubled 'Graduate' Update
Rob Reiner
Rob Reiner is stepping in to replace rookie director Ted Griffin on the update of "The Graduate," which has shut down after one week of shooting.
Griffin wrote the script for the untitled Warner Bros. romantic comedy, which centers on a young woman (Jennifer Aniston) who discovers that her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) was the basis for the character of Mrs. Robinson in the 1967 film "The Graduate." The cast also includes Mark Ruffalo, Mena Suvari and Kevin Costner.
According to one source, Griffin came under criticism for spending too much time on shots with his cinematographer, Ed Lachman ("Far From Heaven"), and not enough time with the cast. Another source said lighting of the actresses was also an issue. The studio declined comment.

Showing Canceled
'Birth of a Nation'
The owner of a silent movie theater canceled a screening of the controversial 1915 D.W. Griffith film, "The Birth of a Nation," after receiving threats and complaints.
Charlie Lustman, owner of the Silent Movie Theatre, said he worried that customers and 92-year-old organist Bob Mitchell, who provides musical accompaniment for the theater's films, would have to cross picket lines to see Monday's scheduled show.
Although considered a technical masterpiece and the forerunner of modern filmmaking, it has also been denounced for its blatantly racist message.

Issued Summons
Mike Wallace
Veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent Mike Wallace was handcuffed and driven to a police station Tuesday night after arguing with city inspectors over where his driver had parked.
The dispute began at about 8:30 p.m., as Wallace was leaving a Manhattan restaurant, WCBS-TV reported. Wallace, 86, saw two inspectors interviewing his driver, who they said was double-parked.
The Taxi and Limousine Commission said Wallace became "overly assertive and disrespectful" and interfered with the inspectors, according to WCBS.
Luigi Militello, the restaurant manager, told WCBS that the inspectors "manhandled" Wallace during the dispute.
