Peoria Finally Honors Native Son
'Richard Pryor Place'
It took eight months of struggle and a new city council, but Peoria's leaders
have agreed to rename a street for Richard Pryor, the native son whose childhood
on the wrong side of the tracks shaped his comedy.
The 6-5 vote on Tuesday changes seven blocks of a street on the city's south
side to ``Richard Pryor Place.'' It followed months of arguments about whether
it's appropriate to honor the comedian considering the often-raunchy nature of
his material and his history of drug abuse and domestic violence.
Councilman Clyde Gulley Jr., who voted for the measure, said the city should
make the most of Pryor's fame.
``I'm not focusing on all the bad - all the negative aspects - but the good
things that Richard Pryor has done for the city of Peoria,'' he said.
In the early 1970s, Pryor began mixing anger, humor and foul language to make
fun of mainstream society and racial issues in Grammy award-winning albums,
concert films and as an actor.
The 60-year-old suffered near-fatal burns in a 1980 fire linked to cocaine
free-basing. In 1991, he announced that he has the degenerative nerve disease
multiple sclerosis and now spends most of his time at home in California.

'Concert For NY'
The greatest concert extravaganza ever to be staged is music's answer to the
most dastardly act of terrorism ever committed.
On Saturday at Madison Square Garden, the elite of American and British
rock 'n' roll will gather for a show expected to rival all three Woodstock
festivals combined.
The one-night fund-raising event to benefit the victims of the Sept. 11
attack - and to honor the heroic efforts of the rescue workers in the
aftermath - was conceived by Paul McCartney.
Sir Paul is the headliner at this mega-concert, whose warm-up acts include Janet
Jackson, Mick Jagger, Billy Joel, Elton John, John Mellencamp, The Who, Eric
Clapton, James Taylor and Jon Bon Jovi, among others.
Everyone's donating their services, from the ushers and lighting crews at the
Garden to the stars themselves.
Although this star-studded concert is sold out, there are 250 pairs of tickets
on sale at the online auction house eBay, on its Auction for America page.
Opening bids for these gold-circle seats are $1,500.
The event starts at 8 p.m. Those who are lucky enough to have tickets need to
arrive early to clear the Garden's security checks. The show will be broadcast
live on VH1 and local radio stations.
All cash raised at this event will go directly to aid WTC victims and their
families, and will be distributed by the Robin Hood Foundation.

The Emmy Awards
The Emmy Awards, the television honors twice postponed since the Sept. 11
attacks on America, will now be held on Nov. 4, sources close to the production
said on Tuesday.
The show was postponed from its original date of Sept. 16 out of respect for the
victims of the Sept. 11 hijacking assaults on the World Trade Center and
Pentagon. The ceremony was reset for Oct. 7, then canceled again when the United
States began air attacks on Afghanistan that day.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said after the second postponement
that they were determined to go on with the show at a later date -- possibly at
a military base or hotel ballroom.

Jerry Springer
Talk show host Jerry Springer will replace talk show host Dick Cavett in the
retooled production of ``The Rocky Horror Show,'' set to reopen on Broadway
Oct. 30 for a limited 10-week engagement.
After the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, thetransgender tuner
revival closed Sept. 23 along with four other Broadway shows as their box office
sales plummeted.
Undeterred, producer Jordan Roth worked to put his first Broadway show back on
the boards. One new selling point appears to be a rotation of celebrities in the
role of the narrator, played by Cavett for more than 350 performances since the
show opened Nov. 15. Springer is set to take over the role for one week in late
November. Others mentioned for the part are Robin Leach, Penn & Teller and Cindy Adams.
Springer said he played the narrator 20 years ago in a Cincinnati Playhouse
production of ``Rocky Horror.'' The role is no stretch, he commented: ``There's
not much difference between the characters in the show and the characters on my
show,'' referring to ``The Jerry Springer Show.''

LA TV Stations Promote 1 'Special'
"Together: A Call for Unity"
In an unprecedented display of cooperation, 10 Los Angeles television stations
have produced a half-hour news special titled ``Together: A Call for Unity,'' which they will
air at various times between Friday and Monday.
The project features segments contributed by each station on the topic of
prejudice and intolerance in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. The stations on
board are KABC (channel 7), KCAL (channel 9 - independent), KCBS (channel 2), KCET (channel 28 - PBS),
KCOP (channel 13 - UPN), KMEX (channel 34 - Spanish), KNBC (channel 4), KTLA (channel 5 - the WB), KTTV (channel 11 - Faux) and KVEA (channel 52 - Spanish).
The special includes interviews with Japanese-Americans who were interned during
World War II, a profile of a southern California minister who wore the traditional
Afghan woman's garb for a week and a segment on Muslim schoolchildren in Los Angeles.
Executive producer Michael Linder said the project's genesis was an Oct. 5
meeting at the Museum of Tolerance called by Los Angeles County Sherrif Lee Baca
to discuss the community's reaction to the attacks and strategies the media
might employ to encourage racial tolerance.
The stations are footing the bill for the special, which will have commercial breaks.

Even Tiger Woods Needs ID
In morning darkness at Disney, Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara were headed to the
first tee at the Magnolia Course when two security guards asked for identification.
Woods, perhaps the most recognizable athlete in the world, held out his driver's
license, but that wasn't enough. They wanted to see his PGA Tour badge.
``I don't have it,'' Woods said Wednesday after a brief search through his pockets.
The guards looked at each other, unsure what to do next, and decided to let
him through the checkpoint.
``I think he's won this tournament a couple of times,'' O'Meara assured them.
``He's a pretty good player.''

George Harrison
Former Beatle George Harrison has recorded his first single since being treated
for cancer earlier this year, a music industry source said Wednesday.
Harrison, 58, co-wrote ``A Horse to Water'' with his son Dhani and recorded it
with British musician Jools Holland.
Harrison recorded the song at home on Oct. 1, less than six months after
undergoing radiotherapy for a brain tumor. He was treated for throat cancer in
1997.
A spokesman for Holland described the new song as a cross between 1960s Bob
Dylan and early 1970s John Lennon. ``It is not a ballad and it is not rock -- I
think George Harrison fans will be intrigued,'' the spokesman added.
His single will appear on Holland's album ``Small World, Big Friends,'' to be
released in Britain on Nov. 19, in which Holland plays duets with some of the
biggest names in music, including Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler, Van Morrison and
Eric Clapton.
Harrison was unavailable for comment.

$360,200 Bid Wins
Jay Leno's celebrity-autographed Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a matching truck
drew a top bid of $360,200 on eBay, with proceeds going to the Twin Towers Fund
for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The talk-show host will announce the name of the winning bidder on NBC's ``The

began Oct. 7 and ended Wednesday.
Leno asked celebrities from movies, television, music and sports who visited his
show to sign the limited edition Harley-Davidson FXDL Dyna Low Rider, which he
bought in July. The motorcycle, which has only 200 miles on it, features a
custom black-leather seat and custom paint.
Among the stars who signed it: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nicole Kidman, Pamela
Anderson, Mira Sorvino, Martina McBride, Earvin ``Magic'' Johnson, Nicolas Cage,
Cuba Gooding Jr., John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone, Denzel Washington, Samuel
L. Jackson, Tom Cruise, Michael Douglas, Ricky Martin, Billy Bob Thornton,
Angelina Jolie, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Terry Bradshaw,
James Woods, Ozzy Osbourne and Heather Locklear.
Also included in the deal is a 2001 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 SuperCrew, one of
a series of trucks the two companies created together.

"Smallville" Kicked Butt, Ratings-Wise
Tuesday Night's Ratings
The young Superman tale ``Smallville'' proved to be more powerful than a
locomotive Tuesday, premiering to some of the best ratings in the WB network's
seven-year history.
Tuesday also saw continued boffo ratings for the CBS dramas, more good news for
rookie comedies ``Undeclared'' (Fox) and ``Scrubs'' (NBC), and slight
improvement for a beleaguered ABC.
According to Nielsen Media Research, the 68-minute premiere of the critically
acclaimed ``Smallville'' (9:00-10:08 p.m.) attracted the largest audience ever
for a series premiere on the WB (8.35 million viewers) -- outdrawing ABC's
comedies and Fox's ``Love Cruise'' to finish third for the hour.
``Smallville'' won its hour in demos such as persons 12-34 (4.4/12), men 18-34
(5.0/14) and teens (4.1/15), growing through its broadcast.
Fox received strong ratings for its Tuesday comedies ``That '70s Show'' (10.27
million, 5.5/15 in 18-49) and ``Undeclared'' (8.49 million, 4.8/12), both of
which won their slots in 18-49 and 18-34. ``Undeclared'' has held onto 90% or
more of its lead-in every week.
Fox clinched the night in 18-49 -- its first Tuesday victory of the
season -- when reality series ``Love Cruise'' wrapped with the best numbers of
its seven-episode run (7.26 million, 4.1/10 in 18-49).
NBC's ``Emeril'' fell to new lows in its fourth outing (6.70 million, 2.6/7 in
18-49), dropping 8 shares behind Fox's ``'70s Show'' in 18-49.

Another Multiyear Contract
Sally Jessy Raphael
Sally Jessy Raphael has signed a multiyear deal to continue hosting her long-running
talk show ``Sally,'' currently in its 19th season in broadcast syndication.
Although the show, like so many in syndication, has struggled in the ratings
recently, it is cleared to return for the 2002-03 season on TV stations covering
more than 50% of the country. The show is sold in 10 of the top 15 markets,
including Los Angeles (on KTLA) and Chicago (WGN).
One industry analyst said that Raphael's deal indicates Studios USA, which also
distributes ``The Jerry Springer Show,'' is very serious about keeping ``Sally''
on the air.
``I think they're trying to make it come back. They've understood they had
trouble this year, changed producers, added a family of contributors to the
show,'' the station source said. ``The perception in the marketplace is that
the show is running out of gas. ... But if 10 of the top 15 are on board to
bring it back, there's at least reason to explore that possibility.''

Happy 75th Birthday
Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry still unleashes the bent-kneed duck walk and one-legged hop that
helped make him famous in the days of sock hops and soda shops.
``Sometimes I forget, and the fans remind me I can still do it. So I'll fire
back,'' says Berry, who turns 75 on Thursday. ``If they want it, they got it.''
``Rock's so good to me. Rock is my child and my grandfather,'' he said a few
days before his birthday bash Thursday night at The Pageant, a club in his
hometown of St. Louis. He was to perform, along with his friend Little Richard.
One of rock 'n' roll's most important architects, Berry pioneered a musical
revolution that began decades ago when couples bopped to his guitar-driven hits
like ``Maybellene,'' ``Roll Over Beethoven,'' ``Sweet Little Sixteen,'' ``Rock
and Roll Music'' and ``No Particular Place To Go.''
He helped inspire Elvis and the Beatles, was inducted into both the Rock and
Roll and Songwriters halls of fame and last year got one of the nation's highest
awards as a Kennedy Center Honor recipient.
``I'm glad to be anywhere,'' says Berry, who has four children and six
grandchildren. ``I'll be doing the same thing as long as it doesn't hurt
anybody, especially if it brings somebody happiness.''
``I have very little concern for sure about time and age,'' he says. ``If I feel
14, I act like it. If I feel old, I'll lay down.''
``My grandfather smoked a pipe when they found him lying deceased in his bedroom.
I'm hoping I'll have just finished a practice in my room, with a guitar in my
arms. That's the way I want to go.''

Concert Tours
The already gloomy fall musical forecast is looking a bit cloudier today as both
Britney Spears and Destiny's Child announced tour delays.
Spears is postponing the start of her North American fall tour by five days
after being felled by a flu bug.
Spears' reps say the singer caught the bug upon returning from a promotional
tour in Australia, which she cut short due to the September 11 terrorist
attacks. She was forced to push back the North American tour after doctors
ordered her to rest a week, causing the cancellation of several rehearsals.
The delay will not affect Britney's November 18 performance in Las Vegas--which
HBO plans to broadcast live. Billboards promoting the show have already gone up
featuring the popster donning Elvis' famous white jumpsuit.
Destiny's Child, meanwhile, becomes the latest act to scrap European tour plans
in the wake of the terror attacks.
The sexy R&B trio, who also just returned from a brief stint Down Under, was
supposed to kick off the Euro leg of the Survivor tour in Stockholm on October
24. But now that the State Department has issued a caution to all Americans
traveling abroad to be on guard for possible terrorism, the group decided to
push the tour start back until May.
Several major music makers--Janet Jackson, Blink-182, Weezer, Pantera, Aimee
Mann and Michael Penn, among them--have bagged overseas tours in recent weeks
citing terror fears.
They aren't the only ones who've remade concert plans. Ozzy Osbourne's Black
Christmas tour was renamed the Merry Mayhem tour and the Anthrax-Judas Priest
trek, originally supposed to launch September 14, is now on track for a January start.

Film Maker Has A Theory
Robert Altman
Did the terrorists get their ideas for the Sept. 11 attacks from watching
American-made movies?
Director Robert Altman thinks so.
"The movies set the pattern, and these people have copied the movies," Altman
said "Nobody would have thought to commit an atrocity like that unless they'd
seen it in a movie."
The filmmaker, responsible for such movies as "M*A*S*H," "Nashville" and "The
Player," said the problem is that studios spend a lot of time and money trying
to appeal to young males.
Altman said it's as if violent action movies with huge explosions are really
training films for terrorists.
He made waves last year when he said he would leave the country if George W.
Bush were elected president.
Altman said that a Republican victory "would be a catastrophe for the whole world."
He took issue with Bush's plans to cut taxes and raise military spending.

Next Year's Grammy Awards
27 Feb., 2002
The Grammy Awards, the top honors in the music industry, will take place in Los
Angeles next year, the city's mayor said Wednesday, even as organizers wonder
how to announce the winners of the Latin Grammys, which were canceled following
the Sept. 11 attacks.
A source close to the event said the ceremony will take place Feb. 27 at the
Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, site of the last two ceremonies.
The official announcement about the 44th annual Grammys will be made at a news
conference Thursday morning at the Staples Center.
The Grammys have traditionally been held in Los Angeles, but organizers brought
them to New York, the corporate home of the music industry, in 1994, 1997 and
1998. A feud then broke out between Greene and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who
accused Greene of threatening a city official, which has helped keep the Grammys
in Los Angeles ever since.
Meanwhile, the second annual Latin Grammys were to take place in Los Angeles on
the evening of Sept. 11, but were canceled following that day's attacks on the
World Trade Center and the Pentagon. An academy spokeswoman said the
organization hoped to make an announcement about how the winners will be
revealed within several weeks.

Jay Livingston
Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Jay Livingston, who with longtime
collaborator Ray Evans penned such hits as ``Que Sera Sera,'' the Christmas
carol ''Silver Bells'' and the Nat King Cole classic ``Mona Lisa,'' died
Wednesday in Los Angeles, associates said. He was 86.
During a 64-year collaboration, Livingston and Evans won Oscars for ``Buttons
and Bows'' in 1948, which was originally sung by Bob Hope and Jane Russell;
``Mona Lisa'' in 1950 and ``Que Sera Sera,'' in 1956, sung by Doris Day in the
Alfred Hitchcock thriller ``The Man Who Knew Too Much.'' They also won the
title, 'the last of the great songwriters.'
Other hits, now standards, included ``Tammy,'' ``Dear Heart,'' ''To Each His
Own,'' ``Golden Earrings,'' and ``Silver Bells,'' originally sung by Bob Hope in
the movie ``Lemon Drop Kid'' in 1951. The pair also wrote the theme songs for
two popular television series, ``Bonanza,'' and ``Mr. Ed.''
Born in 1915 in the Pittsburgh suburbs, Livingston met Evans when both men were
students at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1930s. Livingston was a
journalism major and Evans studied banking but the two men liked to perform in a
college orchestra and after graduation began collaborating -- with Livingston
writing most of the music and Evans penning most of the lyrics.
The duo continued writing through the millennium and are credited with creating
the songs from ``Godfather: Part III'' in 1990. Their last project was ``Michael
Feinstein Sings the Livingston and Evans Song Book,'' set for release early in 2002.
Livingston was married to Lynne Gordon in 1947. Following her death he married
actress Shirley Mitchell, who survives him. He is also survived by a daughter,
granddaughter, three great grandchildren and a brother.

Etta Jones
Etta Jones, the prolific jazz vocalist whose soulful, blues-influenced
recordings over more than a half-century won her acclaim and two Grammy
nominations, died Tuesday of complications from a bout with cancer. She was 72.
Jones was known for her soulful style, described as a cross between Billie
Holiday, her idol, and Dinah Washington. She died the same day her last
recording, "Etta Jones Sings Lady Day," hit music stores.
Born in Aiken, S.C., Jones was still a teen-ager when she was discovered as she
competed in a contest at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem.
Jones collaborated with such greats as Oliver Nelson, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Kenny
Burrell and Cedar Walton, both in concert and on recordings. She recorded
prolifically for RCA, Prestige, Muse and more recently Highnote Records.
Jones earned a gold record for her 1960 recording "Don't Go to Strangers," and
received a Grammy nomination in 1981 for "Save Your Love For Me." She got a
second Grammy nomination in 1999 for a collection of songs: "My Buddy - Etta
Jones Sings the Songs of Buddy Johnson."
Jones was the recipient of many awards, including the prestigious Eubie Blake
Jazz Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Women in
