Broadway & 'God Bless America'
"God Bless America" wasn't written by Irving Berlin for Broadway, but on
Thursday night — when the theaters reopened after the devastating attack
on the World Trade Center — it became an onstage anthem.
Practically every musical — from "The Producers" to "The Rocky Horror
Show" — brought down the curtains with rousing renditions of the song, and
audiences heartily joined in.
Attendance at most houses was down on Thursday, the first night the industry
resumed its shows, with tourists and stranded travelers making up a good part of
the audience.
Not at "The Producers," however. Although that show had about 150 ticket
cancellations, more than 200 hopefuls snapped them up at $100 per.
"Kiss Me, Kate's" leading man, Burke Moses, told the audience, "We are all in
mourning, but hopefully for the next few hours the musical will help the
audience take your minds off what had happened."
British actor David Warner, in "Major Barbara," said, "Thank you for coming
tonight. We would like to dedicate this evening's performance and the rest of
our performances to the families and victims of the tragedy on Tuesday. God
bless America."
At "The Full Monty," producer Lindsay Law spoke before the performance to the
hit show's smallest audience ever — 410 people in a theater with over 1,000 seats.
"I thanked them for coming," said Law. "The cast was eager to perform. They
wanted to take people away from their troubles for a time, and they were
gratified that the audience was laughing and giggling. Maybe later the memories
of the tragedy set in again, but for a while we brought them joy."

Kids, TV & Televised Tragedy
Following a week of disturbing images of the terror attacks on the World Trade
Center and Pentagon, television turned some of its attention Saturday to trying
to explain the unexplainable to children.
Linda Ellerbee's Lucky Duck Productions has made about 30 specials trying to explain
world events to children ages 8 to 13 over the past decade. This one was
different: Ellerbee and her staff wore surgical masks while doing
post-production work because their lower Manhattan office was affected by the
soot from the blast site.
The special, ``Nick News: Kids, Terrorism and the American Spirit,'' premieres
at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and will be repeated several times over the next week.
Ellerbee said she and about a dozen staffers all wore some version of the flag
Saturday, usually in a bandanna. ``It looks like a Grateful Dead concert,''
she joked.
Experts said not to shield youngsters from what's happening and talk about it,
no matter how difficult it seems.
Said Ellerbee: ``Once again, kids have lost their sense of safety, had it taken
from them. We want to protect kids from this kind of knowledge, this kind of
thing. We want to keep them safe. This is the sort of thing that throws it in
our faces.''
``I say at the end of the show that it might be a good time to turn the set off
for awhile,'' Ellerbee said. ``For all of us.''
