"Kevin Smith and GLAAD"

Cory
GLAAD is angry with Kevin Smith because of the many gay jokes in his new movie,
'Jay and Slient Bob Strike Back'. On his website, Smith defended the film,
saying that the jokes were used simply as a way of making fun of people who were
anti-gay, noting that the character of Jay who makes most of the anti-gay remarks
is a complete moron who may be a closeted homosexual.

Smith goes on to say that he had a meeting with the president of GLAAD, in which
Smith agreed to donate $10,000 to the Matthew Shepard foundation. It seems like
after the conversation between the two of them, the rift is patched up. For the
full story and Smith's post relating to it, go to View Askew, Smith's website.

Randy Newman

Randy Newman

Nancy Maynard
Big Hat - No Cattle - Randy Newman

I am 44 years old. When I was in junior and high school, and 11-14, I studied
piano. I loved classical music and semi-classical music. I also loved rock, pop,
folk rock and enjoyed guitar guys like Stephen Stills, James Taylor - of course
but, one artist really made an impact on my life.

He was dark, pensive and intelligent - and he played the piano. Randy Newman is
such a great musical genius that most everyone has heard his music (via movies
and such) and didn't know it. This guy recently put out an album called "Bad
Love" . The lady that runs the website bighatnocattle,
knows this album as it is one of the songs. The chorus goes, "and I lied -
lied - lied!." Hey if there is any anthem that describes our Failure in Thief - it
is this song.

Randy Newman also wrote many songs about "God". His "That's Why I Love Mankind" is
a dark parody of all the religious, 'Oh, God loves me and spares me because . . ."
his dark "God" loves man because "he really needs me" shows contempt that a real
God might feel for all the slobering and praying we do, etc.

So many of Newman's songs, such as the popular "Short People" were studies in
irony. There is so little irony these days in our culture, I hope you get my
drift. He wrote "Good Ole' Boys" and one of the refrains was "keeping the niggers
down". His satire was on the ignorant racists of our culture. Obviously, this
type of commentary was not "top forty".

Last year a compilation of his forty years of recording was released as "Guilty -
Forty Years of Randy Newman". This included his classics, 'Sail Away' (about
slaves going to Charleston) and 'Good Old Boys' (his theme album about the South).
Both ingenious studies in irony using American musical themes, among other
caustic themes and beautiful songs.

Hey, if you are intelligent enough to look at this site, don't pass up listening
to Randy Newman.

"Team Rodent -- How Disney Devours the World"

Btw 72
At a breezy 83 pages, Smirk could get through Team Rodent, by Carl Hiaasen.
Although a good book, Team Rodent "could" have drawn a parallel between the
Peeping Tom who was caught secretly videotaping dancers in the dressing room at
Disney World and Peep Land, the Times Square porno shop. The monkey spanking
wardrobe assistant in Cinderella's Castle could have been turned over to law
enforcement earlier, but Disney "investigated" the matter for three months and
let it go on without informing the women. A lawsuit filed by the women after
Disney caught and turned the peeper over to the law was settled out of court.

There are a lot of good, informative parts in the book. At a press party/seminar
sponsored by Disney, a Mickey Mouse character tried to get a cheesy photo-op with
a journalist recently released from a Soviet jail. The journalist sidestepped
the mouse/man/woman when it/he/she tried to give him a hug onstage. This isn't
Disney/ABC warm body Diane Sawyer getting serenaded by a sock-puppet, this is a
"real" journalist. Another good part is Disney ignoring the Bible-loving
protesters who tried to keep tourists from visiting Disney World.

"One marcher held a sign that read "If You Love Jesus, Turn Around." Of course,
the tourists kept coming. Nothing short of flamethrowers would have stopped them.
If anything is more irresistible than Jesus, it's Mickey."

"Team Rodent knows the tolerance level of its audience because it raised its
audience. The fundamentalists' "boycott" of Disney is doomed to flop because
Middle America isn't participating and doesn't, if you'll pardon the expression,
give a rat's ass."

READ THIS BOOK!!

BTW, Btw...

I spent most of the Reagan years in the employ of the above named rodent, and will
also vouch for this book.

The Further Adventures of Shrubius

"The Story Of Captain Ody And The Evil Enchantress"

The story of Captain Ody and the evil enchantress, Su See.

Captain Ody was sent on a great adventure by his sovereign, Shrubius....

Capt. Ody was to sail above the seven seas, and collect information that could
help Shrubius maintain control of both his city-state and the known world...

Ody took with him 23 of the best sailors he knew...his vessel required much
maintenance, and he wanted many eyes to view the wonders of the ancient world.
Especially the wonders of Quian, a mystical land of tall bamboo mountains and
hidden temples...

But to the south of the land of Quian lay the isle of Su See, the giant
enchantress. She was jealous of her privacy, but lonely too, for few visited her
willingly.

Captain Ody was anxious to return home. But he so wanted to visit the land of
Quian that he flew too close to Su See's island. She sent up a magical hawk to
turn the vessel away.

The hawk was young and foolish. He crashed into the ocean. Su See, angered by
the loss, took Ody and his crew onto her island. There, she fed them lotus
leaves... and they forgot time as we know it.

But, while she appreciated the company of Ody and his companions, she was angry
with Shrubius!

She demanded an apology...Shrubius could not offer one, for to do so would leave
his own rule open to challenge.

Shrubius called on the man who advised his father...he called on Colinus of
Powell, a man who still commanded some respect in his city-state, even though
many thought he'd rolled over for the boy-king.

And Colinus of Powell translated the word "apology" for Shrubius.

But Shrubbius knew he could never say the word, much less spell it.

He asked for something similar...something "like" apologize....and Colinus of
Powell came up with "regret."

So Shrubbius said he regretted the loss of the silly young hawk, which did not
please Su See, who had not thought of the hawk as silly, but at least made her
think.

But Ody and his shipmates began to bore Su See. They quit eating the lotus leaves,
and once again recognized time, and Su See saw that they were not as fun as she
thought they might be.

And so, after a respectful interim, she accepted the "regret," although it tasted
like nothing, and sent Ody home to his family. He never left Mericus again!

The End.

Epilogue: Shrubbius lasted another three years, and then was shuffled off into
oblivion, escorted by several Harpies. :-)

Steven Spielberg & The Shoah Foundation

S. S.
A foundation created by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg to collect on
videotape the accounts of more than 50,000 Holocaust survivors has completed that
mission, a spokesman said on Friday.

The group called the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation will now
focus on using those accounts for education and to overcome prejudice,
intolerance and bigotry, the spokesman said. Shoah, which means calamity in
Hebrew, is another word used to describe the mass murder of Jews by Nazis in
World War II.

``The archive is their perpetual link to our expanded long-range objectives of
remembrance and education,'' he said.

The Shoah Foundation spokesman said its new mission would emphasize ``worldwide
education'' about the Holocaust, built on what officials there believe is the
largest publicly available video database in the world.

Clint Eastwood, AKA Grandpa A**hole?

Tough-guy actor Clint Eastwood apparently goes weak at the knees over the Olsen
twins, the 15-year old media moguls beloved by pubescent fans the world over.

In an interview published in the September issue of Gear magazine, Eastwood said
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were his favorite current actresses, and he named their
new album, ''Greatest Hits II,'' as his preferred driving music.

A Gear publicist confirmed the veracity of the interview, but said Eastwood was
being facetious. A spokesman for the Olsens said they realized the actor was joking
but were still thrilled to be mentioned, and were, in turn, big fans of his.

Elsewhere in the interview, which was conducted by his friend, TV talk show host
Craig Kilborn, Eastwood claimed that his grandchildren call him ``a--hole.''

Asked when first delivered his trademark menacing stare, Eastwood replied, ``At the
nurse when I was born.''

When Kilborn reminded Eastwood that his comments would end up in print, Eastwood, 71,
said: ``What do I care? I've already had a good career.''

Radio News

NPR vs. Donald Wildmon

When loyal National Public Radio listeners in Lake Charles, La., tuned to 90.5 FM on
May 29, they were dismayed to find themselves listening to Gospel music and
evangelical preaching.

FOR THE SECOND TIME in five months, a Christian network called American Family Radio
had supplanted an NPR member station that served the tranquil community of 70,000.
Today, you can't get public radio in Lake Charles at all, and NPR fans aren't happy
about it.

American Family grabbed the frequencies by deftly exploiting an obscure provision
in the federal regulations governing noncommercial radio. The NPR stations heard in
Lake Charles were weak, unmanned ones that just retransmitted signals originating
elsewhere. Federal Communications Commission rules say that a newly built full-power
station serving a community can take over such a no-frills station's spot on the
dial. American Family knocked off the two NPR stations by putting up two full-power
stations of its own, in Lafayette, La.

It is just one of the ways the Rev. Don Wildmon, the moral crusader behind American
Family Radio, has taken shrewd advantage of FCC rules to build a fast-growing
Christian broadcasting empire. By leveraging regulatory quirks in a little-noticed
corner of the airwaves, American Family has amassed 181 radio stations in 31 states.
"American Family Radio's growth strategy has overturned the status quo in the
religious broadcasting world," says the Rev. Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral
Majority. With its "very aggressive moral and social agenda," he adds, American
Family has become "a primary media outlet for American religious conservatives today."

If you listen to NPR, or just appreciate that NPR can exist in the profit driven
world, please read the whole story at NPR vs. Wildmon.

The only non-depressing part of the story is how he's pissing off the other religious
broadcasters....

In Memory

Maureen Reagan

Maureen Reagan (con't.)

Maureen Reagan, daughter of the former president, was praised Saturday by mourners at
her funeral as a warm, charming woman and a tireless crusader against Alzheimer's
disease.

Actor David Hyde Pierce of TV's ``Frasier,'' who worked with Ms. Reagan through the
Alzheimer's Association, spoke with a quivering voice of his friend's devotion to
fighting the debilitating illness.

``Maureen took care of people - took in the sense of taking charge, taking control,
taking the reins,'' he told mourners. ``And when she was given lemons, she did not
make lemonade; she took the lemons, threw them back and said 'Oh, no you don't.'''

Jane Wyman & Rita Revell

Ms. Reagan's mother, Jane Wyman, arrived an hour before the service. Stepmother
Nancy Reagan arrived later, holding hands with Ms. Reagan's half-sister, Patti
Reagan.

The former president stayed behind at his Bel-Air home. ``He would be confused. With
what he's got going on in his own life, attending would do more harm,'' son Michael
Reagan said last week.
