In The Chaos Household

Saturday Night's TV

Started out watching ''The Bride Of Frankenstein'', on AMC - then watched an old episode of the 'Ed Sullivan Show' on the Orange County PBS station, KOCE - it had Sam Cooke.

Looks like 'SNL' is a rerun (already).

Was pretty stoked about Joe Paterno - back where I was raised he's damn near a demi-god. Having been a band-geek, one of our perks was to partake in 'Band Day' at Penn State. The high school bands of PSU (music department) alumni were invited once a year to perform the half-time show. We had a lot of fun, and most of it was legal...

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

The Agassi Baby

'Jaden Gil'

Mr. & Mrs. Agassi

Steffi Graf gave birth to a healthy son three weeks early, and father Andre Agassi attended the birth.

The baby, Jaden Gil, was born at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas on Friday and weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces, Graf's marketing firm said Saturday.

Mother and son were doing well and were able to leave the hospital the day after the birth, the statement said.

Graf and Agassi married in a private ceremony Monday. They had previously announced their son was expected in early December. It is the first child for both.

Agassi, 31, and Graf, 32, began dating after each won the French Open in 1999. Graf, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, retired in 1999.

Agassi was previously married to actress Brooke Shields. It is Graf's first marriage.

The couple recently bought a $23 million home in the San Francisco Bay area. They announced in July they were expecting a baby.

Air Rage Trial For R.E.M. Member

Peter Buck

R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck has been ordered to stand trial Nov. 12 accused in an alleged air rage incident.

Buck, 44, is charged with being drunk on an aircraft, criminal damage, using threatening words and assaulting two crew members on a British Airways flight.

``The incidents were alleged to have taken place on a BA flight from Seattle to Heathrow on April 21, 2001,'' the Lord Chancellor's Department said in a statement on Friday. Buck has denied the charges.

His trial will be heard by judge John Crocker at Isleworth Crown Court in west London and is expected to last five days.

The incident is alleged to have happened as the rock star flew to London for the South Africa Freedom Day concert in Trafalgar Square, before beginning a world tour with R.E.M.

The band -- Michael Stipe, Mike Mills and Buck -- has sold an estimated 40 million albums since they played their first concert in Athens, Georgia in 1980.

Among their biggest British singles were ``Losing my Religion,'' ``Shiny Happy People,'' ``Man on the Moon'' and ``It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).''

Darwin Manuscripts Destroyed

Glasgow University

Scientific books written by Charles Darwin were destroyed in a fire that gutted a building at Glasgow University, authorities said Thursday.

The blaze broke out Wednesday at the 100-year-old Bower building. No one was injured, and the cause remained under investigation, police said.

A collection of 19th-century botany volumes valued at nearly $3 million was destroyed. Among the lost manuscripts were works by Darwin, the scientist who developed the theory of evolution. It wasn't immediately clear exactly what works were destroyed.

Damage to the three-story building was estimated at $11.4 million.

McGowan On Manson

Rose McGowan

Rose McGowan says several factors led to her breakup with shock rocker Marilyn Manson, including a conflict in their design sensibilities.

``I collect Depression-era Moderne,'' she tells Details magazine in its November issue. ``It doesn't work well with devil's heads.''

McGowan, who's joined the cast of television's ``Charmed,'' also told the magazine that Manson's lifestyle isn't her lifestyle.

``I have never been a rock chick,'' the 27-year-old said.

McGowan says she gets along ``fabulously'' with her ``Charmed'' co-stars Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs. She recently wrapped two films: a comedy with Kip Pardue called ``Vacuums'' and a comedy-drama, also with Pardue, called ``Rat in the Can.''

The Winner Of Last November's Popular Vote

Al Gore

The Popularly Elected, Not Selected, President

As America wages its war on terrorism, history will judge the nation by how it defends equality at home and human rights abroad, former Vice President Al Gore said Saturday.

"Political, religious and economic freedom represent the way we as human beings are intended to live our lives together," Gore told a New Hampshire Democratic Party fund-raiser. "We will never turn our backs on those values."

Gore, paying a visit to the state that hosts the nation's first presidential primary, did not say if he would run again in 2004, despite the prodding of 500 guests, some of whom chanted "Gore in four."

"I'm not gonna respond to that, but I appreciate the encouragement," said Gore, who lost to President Bush in last year's election (sic). "I have not decided what I am going to do in the future."

The terrorist attacks underscore the need for America to promote its values of freedom and peace throughout the world, he said.

"It's been a long time since we've faced a situation where we've been under attack from a group that just wants to kill Americans," he said. "It really challenges our traditional way of thinking about these things.

Gore said the message of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban party is one of terror and injustice and discrimination, a society in which women must hide their faces and are not allowed to go to the doctor.

"It's not really about religion," Gore said. "My religious tradition says that by their fruits, you shall know them. Well, we've seen their fruits, a devastated land where people are suffering from violence and discrimination of all kinds."

Gore praised the dedication of firefighters and police officers who continue to risk their lives despite losing hundreds of colleagues in the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington.

"They were the ones going up the stairs when the rest of the people were trying to escape," Gore said. "What tremendous courage."

Gore also said it is important for Americans to stand behind Bush during this time of crisis, and for Democrats to continue the debate at home over the economy and social reform.

Saturday's $75-a-plate Jefferson-Jackson Dinner was expected to raise more than $20,000 for the party, officials said.

Gore kept a low-profile in the days leading up to the event as he toured the state and met with party members.

He said that if he runs for president again, there's at least one thing he'll change: "If I had it to do over again I would have kissed Tipper longer at the convention."

Trouble On The Set

'Max Bickford'

Amid serious creative differences with CBS, the two creators of ailing Richard Dreyfuss drama ''The Education of Max Bickford,'' are no longer running the big-budget show.

Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin are still coming to work, but ``Max'' supervising producer Joe Cacaci has assumed day-to-day control of the rookie series.

After a strong start, ratings for ``Bickford'' have steadily dwindled downward. CBS hasn't said whether it'll pick up additional episodes of the costly hour, in which Dreyfuss plays a college history professor. However the promotion of Cacaci could give the show some breathing room.

Executives at 20th Century Fox TV, one of the producers of the show, were also said to agree that changes needed to be made in the show's direction, although the studio believed Prestwich and Yorkin should have been given a chance to make those changes, insiders said.

Representatives for CBS and 20th declined comment.

The 'New' Anakin

Hayden Christensen

The 'New' Anakin

Winning the lead role of Anakin Skywalker in the next two ``Star War'' prequels has left newcomer Hayden Christensen humbled.

``I still live with my folks, who make me mow the grass and take the garbage out,'' he tells People magazine in its Nov. 5 issue.

The first prequel, ``Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones,'' is due out next year.

Christensen says every nuance on the set was surreal.

``The outfit and the cloak? Mind-boggling. Meeting R2-D2? An out-of-body experience. The light saber? A thrill,'' he said.

Christensen also plays Kevin Kline's son in the new film ``Life as a House.''

What's With This?

TV Helicopters

TV journalists on Thursday urged top White House officials to lift a post-Sept. 11 ban on news helicopters in skies above the country's top markets, including New York and Los Angeles.

In a letter addressed to new Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge, Radio-Television News Directors Assn. (RTNDA) president Barbara Cochran said the grounding robs the viewing public of critical information.

Cochran pointed out that similar types of aircraft also grounded after the attacks have been cleared for takeoff, and news choppers should be no different.

``News and traffic helicopters are among the most valuable tools used by television and radio stations to inform their audiences,'' Cochran said. ``The public has been deprived of speedily receiving accurate information about their immediate communities.''

The Federal Aviation Administration has told RTNDA that the ban continues for national security reasons, a position Cochran said she doesn't understand.

In addition to writing Ridge, Cochran also sent letters to National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, White House chief of staff Andrew Card and presidential adviser Karen Hughes. Earlier this week, Cochran made a similar pitch to the FAA.

Media and entertainment lobbyists have been paying close attention to the helicopter issue as well, saying the ban is of serious concern.

Mass Firings At Disney World Orlando

Disney World Orlando has fired about 100 full-time actors who perform in the Florida theme park's live shows.

The Walt Disney Company announced the layoffs last week, effective immediately. The company said the firings come because of a steep decline in tourism which followed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

The shows include "Festival of the Lion King," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Hoop-De-Doo Revue" and the "Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Theatre" at the park's various sites. The actors have been working under a four-year collective bargaining contract which Equity and Disney agreed to in the fall of 2000. Under the pact, laid-off performers receive "no less than two weeks contractual salary, plus unused vacation and sick pay," according to Equity.

Additional severance pay goes to some performers, depending on length of employment, Equity said. According to the contract, the two weeks salary will go to performers with 3-5 years continuous service, three weeks pay for 6-9 years, and four weeks for 10 or more years. The pact also requires that actors receive an appropriate notice period. Since the layoffs became immediately effective without the normal two weeks notice, the actors were paid the salaries that would cover the two-week period, according to Zalina Hoosein, an Equity business representative who spoke to Back Stage on Monday.

"Equity is dismayed by the large number of performers affected by this lay-off," said Carol Waaser, Equity's Eastern regional director. "We're just glad that our collective bargaining agreement provides for severance payments in this unfortunate situation. The Equity office in Orlando is working with individual performers to ensure they receive all the benefits to which they're entitled."

According to the Associated Press, Disney spokesman Bill Warren said that workers affected by the cuts have been offered other non-entertainment jobs. Those who don't accept the offer will receive severance packages.

At press time, AP reported that Disney World had asked other of its Orlando employees to voluntarily cut back 20% of their hours and salaries. Disney spokeswoman Marilyn Walters said Disney has encouraged 7,400 full-time workers to reduce their workweek to 32 hours in order to help preserve some jobs and benefits. The company also released an unspecified number of its highly paid high-tech employees on Monday. Work schedules for 40,000 of Disney's hourly employees were reduced following the immediate downturn in tourism following the Sept. 11 attacks, AP said.
