Emmy Awards CANCELLED
The Emmy Awards telecast, delayed three weeks by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks,
was canceled Sunday after United States and Britain launched a military attack
in Afghanistan.
It was the first cancellation in the 53 years of the Emmy Awards.
CBS spokeswoman Susan Marks did not elaborate on the network's decision.
The ceremony had been scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. EDT.
The television industry had grappled in the weeks following the attack with the
propriety of holding a celebration such as the Emmys.
The Recording Academy had already canceled its 2nd Annual Latin Grammys show.

Workers dismantle decorations at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles after
executives decided to cancel the Emmy Awards show and broadcast following US-led
military attacks on Afghanistan, October 7, 2001.
This is the first time in 53 years the awards show has been cancelled.

Emmy Awards
"It's a fine line you walk," said Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
President Jim Chabin. "We're in the business of entertaining people and making
people smile and feel emotion at a time when people's emotions are raw."
He said the show will have to "hit the tone just right not only in the U.S. but
about 90 countries around the world."
The Shrine Auditorium ceremony, which will air 8 p.m. EDT Sunday on CBS, will
include a New York studio broadcast for presenters and nominees who want to
avoid traveling to Los Angeles.
"The 'West Wing' cast is coming. The 'Sopranos' cast is coming in New York," he
said, naming the leading nominated shows. "In the final hours, people are really
beginning to rally."
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the
academy heard a variety of opinions about whether the ceremony should be
rescheduled or not. It originally was set for Sept. 16.
Instead of canceling, organizers decided to strip away much of the glitz.
Fan-filled bleachers outside the Shrine have been banished and the red carpet
area has been scaled back.
Celebrities may choose to avoid the media entirely, entering through a Shrine
back door. Some industry publicists said their clients are likely to choose the
low-key approach.
Emmy participants were asked to trade their formal tuxedoes and typically
lavish, sometimes revealing gowns for dressy business attire, including suits
for men and cocktail gowns or pantsuits for women.
Although comedian Ellen De Generes is the master of ceremonies, veteran newsman
Walter Cronkite will set the tone with opening remarks. Tribute will be paid to
the attacks' heroes and victims, including "Frasier" producer David Angell, who
was killed in one of the hijacked planes.
The awards presentation order itself is different, with the first trophy going
to best supporting actress in a drama series, not a comedy series as is traditional.
The changes, and time, apparently helped overcome resistance. All but one of the
presenters and nominees who had agreed to attend the original ceremony were back
on board, the academy said.
On Friday, Martin Sheen, Melina Kanakaredes, Alan Alda, Edie Falco and Ben
Kingsley were among those announced as participants. They join Andre Braugher,
Calista Flockhart, Ray Romano and others previously listed.

Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
October 6 - 14
Cool temperatures and a light wind provided perfect conditions for flying
Saturday as some 700 hot air balloons took to the skies for the opening of the
city's annual balloon fiesta.
The event draws hundreds of balloonists and tens of thousands of spectators to
Albuquerque each October.
There had been concerns that a light aircraft ban in the wake of the Sept. 11
attacks would delay or cause officials to cancel this year's fiesta. Once the
ban was lifted, preparations for the fiesta continued as planned.
Security was increased. About 50 percent more law enforcement officers mingled
with the crowd, and large bags and coolers were checked at entrance gates.

Mackenzie Phillips, daughter of "Papa" John, was 18 when Mick Jagger had sex
with her while her father banged on the door begging his pal Jagger to be gentle.
Phillips recalls the incident in a story on the offspring of '60s rock stars in
the November issue of Vanity Fair. Phillips recalls that one day she and her dad
were at Mick's house when Papa John went to the store.
"Mick turned around and locked the door and looked at me, and said, 'I've been
waiting to do this since you were 10 years old,' " Phillips tells Vanity Fair.
"My dad is banging on the door, 'Mick, be nice to her! Don't hurt her.' And I'm
going, 'Dad, leave us alone. It's fine.' And we slept together."
The same year, Papa John introduced Mackenzie to intravenous cocaine, and even
shot her up himself the first time, over Jagger's protests. Her younger sister
Bijou started doing drugs in her teens as well.
Among the other stories recounted by the children of rock legends:
Justin Kreutzmann, son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, recalls being
backstage with his dad's band at NBC's TV studios at the age of 9 when the
network demanded they provide urine samples before performing on "Saturday Night
Live." "My dad said, 'Go in the bathroom,' " Kreutzmann, now 31, tells the mag.
"And there were six little cups lined up. I'm like, 'Get me some water.' "
Justin also recalls that when he was on tour with his dad, he often ended up in
a bed full of hot groupies.
While all the rock kids have engaged in their share of promiscuous behavior,
Rufus Wainwright, the openly gay pop star son of folk singer Loudon
Wainwright III, hasn't stopped partying. In a recent interview with Nerve
magazine, Wainwright revealed, "I'm basically a slut, but I'm also really,
really shy. I'm a real prude but once the prudishness is gone, I'll have sex
with 20 guys."
A self-described "sicko," Wainwright's first homosexual encounter occurred in
London's Hyde Park when he was 14 and "bordered on rape." The next summer, "I
went out for sex, and boy, did I get it. It was insane, and basically I ended up
thinking I had AIDS for the next seven to 10 years." And although he did later
have one girlfriend, Wainwright made out with the male Nerve writer during
the interview.

Where's Senator Clinton?
Human Rights Campaign
The surviving partners of gay and lesbian victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks should get the same assistance and benefits that the families of other
victims get, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., said Saturday night.
Clinton, addressing an audience of gay and lesbian activists, said that in the
aftermath of the attacks, "we have to make clear that what we're fighting for
is our values."
And that includes ending "discrimination against gays and lesbians once and for
all," she said.
Clinton was the keynote speaker at the annual dinner of the Human Rights
Campaign, the largest gay and lesbian political advocacy group in the country
with some 250,000 members.
Recently, the Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman and founder of the Traditional Values
Coalition, said public and private relief agencies providing assistance to
survivors of the terror attacks should not give aid to surviving members of
gay partnerships.
Clinton made no mention of Sheldon by name, but she declared that "domestic
partners should enjoy the same benefits afforded other couples."
That includes the same health insurance, inheritance, property taxes and other
assistance, she said.
The terrorist attacks hung over the dinner and were alluded to repeatedly. "The
attacks on our country were the extreme examples of a hate crime," Clinton said.
The domestic partners of three of the victims were recognized at the gathering:
Tom Hay, the partner of David Charlebois, the co-pilot of the airliner that
crashed into the Pentagon; Nancy Walsh, the partner of Carol Flyzik, a passenger
aboard one of the jetliners that crashed into the World Trade Center; and Mike
Lyons, the partner of Jack Keohane, who worked near the World Trade Center in
New York and was killed as the buildings collapsed.

Support Bill Maher
Ever since he spoke out about America's probable response to the Sept. 11
attacks, ABC's Bill Maher, host of "Politically Incorrect," has been an object
of criticism. Several network affiliates have dropped the late-night show, and
FedEx and Sears stopped their sponsorships.
Now comes word of a grassroots "Support Bill Maher" campaign on the Internet.
During his first show after the tragedy, Maher said, "We have been the cowards,
lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the
airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, [is] not
cowardly." He later apologized for the remarks.
The Campaign Has Been organized by John Hlinko at MillionFlagMarch.com/bill/.
More than 6,000 people have signed an online petition condemning the "unfair"
attacks against Maher.
"There's a belief among some that Maher was somehow praising the terrorists,"
said Hlinko, "but anyone who's actually seen the episode or read the transcript
quickly sees how absurd that belief is."

'The Simpsons DVD
Alex
Yesterday I joined the exciting world of DVDs and purchased a DVD player. As I was walking through
the isles of Best Buy, I decided I needed a DVD to watch in my new player, so I picked up "The
Simpsons - The Complete First Season". Below is a review I put together after watching the DVD yesterday.
America's first dysfunctional family (no, not the Bushes), the Simpsons, comes to DVD in all their glory.
The 3-disc set contains all 13 episodes from the first season of the show. It starts of with "Simpsons
Roasting on an Open Fire", the December 1989 Christmas Special which launched the hugely popular
show. Throughout the 13 episodes we are introduced to most of the residents of Springfield: Mr. Burns,
Smithers, Patty and Thelma, and others. The show's animation is much different than now, the quality is not
that great of course. But as for the show's content it is as funny and as interesting to watch as any episodes.
The set is also full of extras, most of which are on the 3rd disc. One of those is the original sketch from the
Tracey Ullman Show, "Goodnight Simpsons", and it's a must watch for the diehard fans of the show. It also
includes Matt Groening's commentary as he discusses an unaired version of "Some Enchanted Evening".
Some other extras are "The Making of The Simpsons" and foreign language clips.
The 13 episodes on The Simpsons - The Complete First Season are: "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bart
the Genius," "Homer's Odyssey," "There's No Disgrace Like Home," "Bart the General," "Moaning Lisa,"
"The Telltale Head," "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," "Call of the Simpsons," "Homer's Night Out,"
"Life in the Fast Lane," "Krusty Gets Busted," and "The Crepes of Wrath."

American Oceans Campaign
Hollywood may be setting aside politics and lining up behind President George
W. Bush in the wake of the World Trade Center attacks, but the entertainment
industry elite showed they hadn't forgotten their old friend Bill Clinton when
they turned out to honor the former president for his work for environmental
causes at the eighth annual American Oceans Campaign.
"He's the most amazing man," said AOC Founding President Ted Danson (Becker)
about the former chief executive, who received the group's prestigious Partners
Award designed by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. Danson confessed that
three days after the Sept. 11 attacks he had been tempted to cancel the gala
awards ceremony, fearing it may have been inappropriate, but Clinton's
willingness to go on with the event convinced the actor that going on with
business as usual was the right thing to do.
"Obviously he was asked six months ago to do this," Danson told me.
"Coincidentally, I can't think of another human being I want to be in a room
with tonight who has the ability to embrace and to commiserate and to empathize
as much as he does. I'm honored and tickled that he's here."
"People wanted to see an old friend in Bill Clinton," agreed Danson's wife,
actress Mary Steenburgen, who said the tickets to the event, underwritten by the
upscale and environmentally conscious Italian men's clothier Ermengildo Zegna,
were a near-instant sell-out.
The Dansons were planning on skipping another high-profile event, the Emmys--but
only because the day was also their sixth wedding anniversary.
The now-silver-haired Danson (who also revealed that a young fan recently said
to him, "You must be Ted Danson's father") praised Clinton for his many efforts
to protect the oceans and coastlines during his two terms in office, including
extending the moratorium on offshore oil drilling, signing the BEACH Act and
ordering the creation of a network of marine protected areas.
"He also signed the Oceans Act, which will create a commission to look at the
ocean as an ecosystem," said Danson. "You have to look at it as a whole before
you can attack the problem."
In light of national security concerns, the former president bypassed the red
carpet arrivals line outside the Los Angeles Room of the Century Plaza Hotel
(perhaps also to avoid questions about the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to bar
him from practicing law before it), as did outspoken emcee Bill Maher, who
nearly got himself fired after his recent comments regarding American military
policies on his TV show Politically Incorrect rankled audiences and caused
several sponsors and stations to pull their support.
But there was plenty of star power to spare, with appearances by a wide array of
celebrities including Danny DeVito (whose wife Rhea Perlman, who just appeared
with her old Cheers co-star on the season premiere of Danson's Becker), Sex In
the City sweetheart Kristin Davis, West Wing stars Janel Maloney and Dule Hill,
JAG leading man David James Elliott, Jeff Goldblum (who invited everyone to
catch him playing the piano at the Lounge in West Hollywood next Tuesday), Lea
Thompson, Victoria Tennant, political pundit Ariana Huffington, Malcolm McDowell
(whose 18-year-old son Charlie introduced the prez), Maria Conchita Alonso, Gary
Busey, Sports Illustrated and Cosmopolitan model Josie Moran, actor Brad
Rowe (Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss) and still-fine 1980s TV blonde bombshell
Heather Thomas.
Also joining Danson were his Becker co-stars, including Hattie Winston, Alex
Desert, Saverio Guerra and the leggy and charmingly loquacious Terry Farrell,
who REALLY knows her Ralph Lauren.
Even more stars and Hollywood power brokers were inside the exclusive pre-event
cocktail party, including Sylvester Stallone and his expectant wife Jennifer
Flavin, Dennis Quaid, All In the Family creator Norman Lear, Variety senior
columnist Army Archerd, Seinfeld co-creator Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
and CBS head honcho Leslie Moonves, who co-chaired the event with his wife Nancy
and media mogul Ted Turner. Many stars--including longtime Clinton booster
Barbra Streisand and her hubby James Brolin, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey
Maguire--hung out in a private V.I.P. lounge where the former president regaled
them with his saxophone stylings.
Later that night, inside the tightly guarded ceremony, Clinton knocked everyone
out with a sobering and inspiring speech about the current state of affairs in
America, solemnly predicting the while the United States should indeed expect
another serious terrorist attack, the nation's unity will be its ultimate key to
victory. "This country is going to be fine," he told the crowd in his note-less
45-minute address. "Terror has not and will not persevere. They cannot win
unless we give them permission." Clinton was also saluted by singer Ray Charles,
who provided the evening's musical entertainment. The event raised more than
$600,000 for the American Oceans Campaign.
Earlier that same day, Clinton made a stop at the Ermengildo Zegna men's
boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, waving to tourists as he got in and
out of his car (shoppers said the sight of the ex-chief exec boosted their
spirits tremendously). The previous day, Clinton received the Lew Wasserman
Spirit of Democracy Award from John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO, and the
ex-prez was the keynote speaker at the Online Learning 2001 Conference and
Exposition at the L.A. Convention Center.

Gloria Foster
Gloria Foster, the distinguished African-American actress most recently known
for her grandmotherly, spoon-bending performance as Oracle in 1999's sci-fi
blockbuster, died of complications from diabetes Saturday at her New York home.
She was 64.
Foster's career on stage and screen spanned four decades, with her film credits
including 1963's The Cool World and the 1991 TV movie Separate But Equal,
opposite Sidney Poitier. She also racked up numerous TV guest appearances on
shows such as I Spy, The Mod Squad, The Cosby Show, Law & Order and most
recently, the Showtime series Soul Food.
But to many moviegoers, Foster is best remembered for her role as the enigmatic
Oracle--a sweet, mystical Obi Wan Kenobi-type who guided Neo (Keanu Reeves) and
Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in the Warner Bros. smash.
Foster earned raves for the performance, and she was set to reprise her role in
both sequels--Matrix Reloaded and the untitled third installment, produced by
Joel Silver and written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski.
Born in Chicago on November 16, 1936, the actress studied at the city's Goodman
Theater and appeared in local theater before graduating to Broadway in 1961. One
of her first major roles was as Ruth Younger in Raisin in the Sun. She won an
Obie for the 1963 off-Broadway historical drama In White America.
Her first film role came with The Cool World, during which she met her future
husband, actor-director Clarence Williams III (better known as Linc Hayes from
TV's Mod Squad). They later divorced, and Foster never remarried.
"At a certain point, I faced a recognition that I was not going to work as much
as I wanted to," Foster told author Robert Simonson in his book Role of a
Lifetime. "What probably saved me is that I've always felt it was important to
live; to experience the day; to experience the hurt, the pain, the love. And
come your next role, you're so much more vital."
