Steeleye Span: Part II

By Dave Romm

Steeleye Span
Part II: Slowly Going Electric

Celtic Folk/Rock is my favorite type of music and Steeleye Span is my favorite group, and has been for more than 25 years, but I'll try to keep it short. I won't link to all the albums, but you can get many of them from Amazon here or here and find the lyrics to almost all their songs here. I love the net.

Below the Salt, Steeleye Span's fourth album, is often considered their best, and it's my favorite. The album jacket (though not the CD jewel case insert) folds out to show a dinner table with the lords of the manner above the salt (a dish of the expensive spice in the middle of the feast) and the servants below the salt. As is often the case, the use of symbols and terminology is offered without explanation; it's a lot of fun to delve into the Child's Ballads to read the original lyrics to the songs (and compare SSpan's version with other versions). But I digress.

Below the Salt starts out with the weakest cut on the album, Spotted Cow, one of their interminable cow songs. A pleasant ditty, I suppose, with the woman winning the battle of the sexes. Still, one of the great advantages of CDs is how easy it is to skip the first cut and go to one my favorite SSpan songs, Rosebud In June, an a cappella fertility song where the all the musicians join Maddy Prior in the chorus. Some nice jigs are followed by Sheep-Crook and Black Dog, a song notable for being two tunes that crossfade from one to the other as Maddy expresses her anger at an unfaithful lover and you find out why she's mad. Royal Forester, a song about a rape and aftermath, uses electric instruments; not the first time this is done in the celtic folk/rock pantheon, but used quite effectively. King Henry can be inadequately described as a ghost story, and in this long song, 7:10, they shine in their use of music to enhance the narrative. Gaudete hit the British pop charts as an a cappella chant; Latin with an English accent. John Barlycorn, about the development of beer, has been done by many other groups, notably Traffic, but I prefer this one. And one of the great ending songs of all time is Saucy Sailor, with Maddy taking all the parts including the sailor just back from sea, proclaiming his independence. One of the promises I made to myself was that my first radio show would end with Saucy Sailor. It was great.

As Maddy Prior puts it, "Parcel of Rogues saw the use of drums reappear." It's their most electric album to this point. One Misty Moisty Morning is one of their few upbeat songs, followed by a Alison Gross, about a witch, that uses the electric guitar to great effect. The Bold Poachers get caught and a girl looses her maidenhead to a boy who works at The Ups and Downs tavern. Robbery With Violins is a terrific instrumental duet between violin and electric bass. The Wee Wee Man is a magical creature while class differences are explored yet again with The Weaver and the Factory Maid. Rogues In A Nation is about the attempts to put Bonny Prince Charlie back on the thrown of England in the 1700s, solemnly sung nearly a cappella. Charlie was fighting George I, who is ridiculed with the ribald Cam Ye O'er Frae France, an amazing intersection of folk and rock; heavy use of electric instruments even though it's not in modern English and you need a glossary to understand it. Hares on the Mountain is a pleasant tune of an old man urging young men to go after women while they have the chance.

By Now We Are Six (refering to the number of the album and the children's song on it), SSpan was a rock group. Seven Hundred Elves is pure rock, and they got David Bowie to play the sax on the Phil Spector hit, To Know Him Is To Love Him. But they never forgot their folk origins. Thomas the Rhymer (which had different cuts on the British and US releases) is about the Queen of Elfland taking Thomas with her. My favorite cut is Two Magicians, a wizard's duel (as in Disney's Sword In The Stone) that's similar in structure to the Q&A in False Knight On The Road but is a very old song of seduction where the maiden will lose her virginity if she can't counter his magical gambits. Nice fiddle work here as well.

These are three of my favorite albums with Below the Salt and Parcel of Rogues belonging in any serious British folk library and Now We Are Six not far behind. Maddy Prior's voice is strong and expressive and ranges into unlikely keys; the band is musically strong with great choice of songs, instruments and arrangements.

Next up: The Goon Show and Womble connections.

Dave Romm is a conceptual artist with a radio show and a web site and a very weird CD collection. He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here.

Thanks, Dave!

Re: Jon Stewart & SNL

I tape SNL religiously and love Jon Stewart-but when was he on SNL? The last few weeks were a rerun during the Olympics, then one hosted by some snow-boarder, and this week is Ian McKellan. I guess it's possible I screwed up, but I am a major Vidiot, and rarely screw up.

LOL, Daniel. I can identify with that statement. : )

Early last week, some of the NY tabs were saying that Ian McKellen was hosting 'SNL', but, as it turned out, Jon Stewart hosted last Saturday (9 March).

Here are a couple of fairly lame links provided by NBC...

Re: 'Network'

Thanks for the reminder of one of my all time favorite movies. "Network" now looks like a documentary, doesn't it?

I've often wished that if those alleged psychics were real, they should channel Paddy to write a sequel.

But, on the bright side, wouldn't you love to hear Tom Brokaw say "Sybil the Soothsayer"?

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

March Madness ruled overall (too much March Madness around here...although, was delighted to see Creighton take out Florida...long story, but once worked with a shit among shits, who lived & breathed his alma mater - this one's for you, Kenny!).

Managed to watch most of NOW With Bill Moyers on PBS, and followed it with 'Down From The Mountain', also on PBS, which featured the sounds of 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'

Saw some of Barbara Walters in her modified abayeh, or was that a burqa without a front panel?

Also saw some of '8 1/2'. Damn. That movie is nearly 40 years old - 1963! Fellini sure could tell a story!

Tonight, Saturday, March Madness intrudes on CBS and primetime, so look for a couple of hours of local filler, and then a rerun of 'The District'.

NBC is fresh, with the first hour shilling the re-edited version of the soon to be re-released 'E.T'. Spielberg had guns held by federal agents digitally altered into cell phones, among other things. It is followed by the made-for-TV movie 'The Matthew Shepard Story'. SNL is fresh, and Sir Ian McKellen hosts.

On ABC it's the James Bond movie of the week, 'The Man With The Golden Gun', Roger Moore's 2nd James Bond, with some great car stunts, and Herve Villechaize. The TRT is 125 minutes, so expect some editing.

The WB is airing 'Miami Rhapsody', a movie, from 1995.

Faux has a fresh episode of 'Cops', followed by a rerun of 'Cops'. Then, it's a fresh 'America's Most Wanted'.

UPN has the movie 'Dead Ahead', and it's not about Jerry Garcia. Stephanie Zimbalist stars.

2 of the local PBS stations have 'A Tribute To Victor Borge'. I loved Victor Borge.
Long, long time ago, my pal Erin set me up on a blind date with a Raygun speech-writer. Talk about a night with mixed emotions, and random nightmare potential...

AMC has 'The Abominable Dr. Phibes', where Vincent Price is at his campiest best.

TCM continues through the Oscar movies...today, they include 'Sergeant York', 'Casablanca', and 'All Quiet On The Western Front'. War movies with a message. : )

And, please, look into joining us tonight at www.710kiro.com OR www.kiro710.com (it's a browser thing), when Erin Hart interviews Greg Palast, at 10pm (pst). There're phone lines available & a chatroom, too! (Scroll down for more info)

To Perform At Isle Of Wight Music Festival

Robert Plant

Robert Plant, former frontman of iconic rock band Led Zeppelin, is to perform at Britain's Isle of Wight music festival in June, festival organizers announced on Friday.

Making a comeback after a 32-year absence from Britain's summer music festival scene, the Isle of Wight was host to some of the greatest names in 70s rock, including the last live performance of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix.

Plant's performance on the island off Britain's south coast with his current band Strange Sensations is the former Zeppelin vocalist's only UK appearance this year, booking agents Solo said in a statement.

"It's great that we have managed to secure this exclusive date and they've even agreed to play at least five of the original Led Zeppelin tracks," said John Giddings, Managing Director of Solo.

Giddings said Plant had recorded a version of Hendrix's "Hey Joe" for his forthcoming album and would perform it at the festival as a tribute to the guitarist. Hendrix died in London 18 days after his Isle of Wight appearance in 1970.

Eager to open up a space tourism market, a Russian aerospace company presented a mock-up Thursday of a "space plane" that would give an adventurer willing to pay nearly $100,000 the chance to experience three minutes in zero gravity on the edge of space.

About 100 people have already booked seats to fly on the Cosmopolis-XXI (C-21) suborbital plane, said Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures, an Arlington, Va.-based company working with Russia's private Suborbital Corporation on the project.

Space Adventures helped the first space tourist, Dennis Tito, broker his flight last year to the International Space Station atop a Russian Soyuz rocket — an eight-day trip for which Tito reportedly paid the Russian space agency $20 million.

The craft, accommodating a pilot and two passengers, will be piggybacked on top of a carrier airplane to an altitude of 56,100 feet. Once released from the carrier, the ship's own solid-fuel rocket engine will propel it to an altitude of just over 60 miles for three minutes in weightlessness.

Then the C-21 will slide back into the atmosphere and land like a conventional plane. The entire mission from takeoff to landing will take about an hour.

For the rest, Cosmopolis-XXI (C-21) suborbital plane

Banned From Air Canada

Salman Rushdie

Air Canada has banned author Salman Rushdie from its flights because the extra security required for him to fly could mean long delays for other passengers, airline officials said Friday.

According to Air Canada, a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration directive requires special security measures if Rushdie is on an airplane entering the United States.

Air Canada spokeswoman Laura Cooke said the airline concluded the same measures would be required on flights within Canada. It chose to keep Rushdie off its planes instead.

FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown confirmed Friday night that such special security directives exist, but she refused to confirm or deny that Rushdie was the subject of a directive.

A spokeswoman for WestJet, a smaller Canadian airline that only operates domestic flights, said Friday that it knew of no reason to keep Rushdie off its planes.

Air Transat, which operates flights to foreign destinations, was unaware of any security issue involving Rushdie, a spokesman said.

Complaint Filed

'Beyond Borders'

Ethiopian officials have complained that a movie starring Angelina Jolie being filmed in Namibia gives a biased portrayal of their country.

Ethiopia lodged a complaint with the Namibian government, saying "Beyond Borders" only shows the 1984 drought and starvation in the country and none of the progress made since then.

In the film, Jolie falls in love with a doctor who travels to Cambodia, Chechnya and Ethiopia to help war victims.

Scenes for the movie are being shot in Namibia instead of Ethiopia — both countries have similar terrain — because at the time filming was being considered in Ethiopia, the country was at war with neighboring Eritrea.

Theater To Be Named In His Honor

Steve Allen

Steve Allen, who made his mark on Broadway, television, in concert halls and book stores, will be honored with a 99-seat theater in the heart of Hollywood.

When the theater opens this summer, it will be used for debates, concerts, plays, poetry readings, and other social events, Jim Underwood, executive director of the Center for Inquiry-West, said at a news conference Friday.

Allen, who was 78 when he died two years ago, was a longtime member of the group, which promotes scientific thought and supports "a nonreligious way to live a rich, fulfilled life."

"He was a great believer in rational thought," Underwood said. The King of Swing in the 1956 movie "The Benny Goodman Story," Allen also acted in soap operas, wrote newspaper columns, commented on wrestling broadcasts, made 40 record albums and wrote plays and a TV series featuring historical figures in round-table discussions.

Newest Addition - 'Walt Disney Studios'

Euro Disney

You can watch stunt drivers race through a mock-up of a French Riviera village, or sit down at an easel for a class on animation. And when your tram gets hit by an earthquake, flood and fire, it's a lesson in special effects.

Walt Disney Studios, the newest addition to Euro Disney's resort outside Paris, opens Saturday, giving visitors a peek behind the scenes of cinema, television and animation.

With palm trees and a miniature 1940s Hollywood Boulevard where starlets in veiled hats pose for the cameras and "producers" recruit visitors as actors, the new park draws on the Tinsel Town theme that has drawn crowds to Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World in Florida.

The idea for adding a cinema-themed park dates back from even before crews began digging up wheat fields east of Paris to build the first park, now called Disneyland Resort Paris, which opened 10 years ago. The park got off to a rocky start but has become one of Europe's top tourist destinations, with more than 12 million visitors a year.

Daryl Hannah has come on board and Lucy Liu is in final talks to join a high-wattage ensemble cast for Quentin Tarantino's long-anticipated next directorial effort, "Kill Bill."

The Miramax Films project stars Uma Thurman as a woman who is shot by her husband, the title character, played by Warren Beatty. She emerges from a coma several years later to get her revenge, which puts her on a collision with murderous associates. His second-in-command, played by Hannah, is Thurman's nemesis. Liu plays Oren Ishi, queen of the Tokyo Yakuza.

Tarantino, the picture's writer and director, and producer Lawrence Bender, also have cast Michael Madsen as Bill's brother.

Attending The Oscars

Tom Cruise

It seems that Tom Cruise is indeed going to attend the Oscars. The august Times of London got it wrong, according to Tom's rep Pat Kingsley. "Even The Times doesn't bother checking with us," she sighed. "He'll be up on stage, and he'll be cheering for Nicole [Kidman] to win the Best Actress Oscar." Cruise will be escorting Penelope Cruz, with whom he has remained intimate even though they've finished promoting their "Vanilla Sky" flick. Someone who's seen the official Oscar program says Cruise is indeed listed near the top of the bill. He's not a presenter but occupies some kind of important spot. It's very gutsy of him because the Oscars will be crawling with Australians (10 from Down Under are nominated) and they might give Tom the Oz equivalent of a Bronx cheer because he's a bit unpopular with them for dumping Australia's sainted Nicole. The Down Under contingent is likely to be raucous because they will be fueled to the top with Victoria Bitter, starting with Thursday's party at the L.A. Australian Film & Television Association.

The Sharks Are Circling

Paxson Communications

Paxson Communications Corp. stock popped higher Thursday on a new round of takeover speculation as the Florida-based TV company seeks to extricate its increasingly valuable broadcast assets from a binding long-term deal with NBC.

The shares rose 11% to $11.79 on the American Stock Exchange. The company and many other broadcasters have seen their stock surge as investors anticipate a stream of mergers in the sector. Last month, a federal appeals court issued two critical rulings: it struck down a ban on owning TV stations and cable systems in one market; and it ordered the FCC to rethink the 35% national cap on station ownership.

NBC, which holds a minority stake in Paxson and has an option to buy the rest, is the likeliest acquirer, although insiders say nothing is imminent. MGM, which just raised $174 million in a debt offering, has expressed interest. Most big media companies, Walt Disney Co. in particular, and large stations groups would covet duopolies Paxson can bring.

Paxson shares have had a nice run, up 72% from their 52-week low in October. Other broadcasters have done equally well and are among the strongest performers in the media space during a rocky period for the market.

Journalists Credentials Suspended Over Clinton Poll

State-Controlled Media

Vietnam has suspended credentials of three senior journalists after their state-run paper published a survey last year showing that then U.S. President Bill Clinton was more popular than the prime minister.

Thursday's official Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper said the Ministry of Culture and Information's Press Department had decided to temporarily suspend the press cards of the editor-in-chief of the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Le Van Nuoi, and two deputies.

A source at Tuoi Tre said the story at issue had been a survey in which young people were asked who their idols were.

While late revolutionary hero Ho Chi Minh came out top and Vietnam War General Vo Nguyen Giap second, Bill Clinton -- who had just paid a landmark visit to Vietnam the previous November -- rated better than Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

All Vietnam's domestic media are under the control of the state and are seen by the ruling Communist Party as a vehicle for propaganda.

In Memory

Marc Moreland

Marc Moreland, lead guitarist in the 1980s punk band Wall of Voodoo, has died due to liver transplant complications. He was 44.

Moreland, who grew up in West Covina, died Wednesday in France, his brother and Voodoo bassist/keyboardist Bruce Moreland said.

The "Mexican Radio" video was an MTV staple during the cable network's first days. Band members included Stan Ridgway, Marc Noland, Chas Gray, Joe Nanni and the Moreland brothers. The band's first hit album was "Wall of the West."

The brothers' music aspirations were born when they went to a Jimi Hendrix concert as youngsters. They later copied Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop and wore spiked hair and clothes that looked like dresses.

"We did anything that would shock people," Bruce Moreland said.

Their mother, Bonnie Hart, now lives in El Monte and works at Santa Anita Park racetrack. "People would come up to me all the time at Santa Anita and ask me about Marc," Hart said. "Everyone around here loved him."

The Moreland brothers formed Wall of Voodoo in 1978. Bruce left the band in 1983, a year before release of the band's hit "Mexican Radio." Wall of Voodoo disbanded in 1989.

Moreland was hospitalized while visiting his wife, Frederique, in France. After four months in the hospital, he returned to the Los Angeles area, then returned to France because he didn't have health insurance.

Moreland received a liver transplant, but after five weeks, his body rejected the liver and he died. His body will be cremated and the ashes will be returned to his family. Bruce Moreland said his brother wanted his ashes spread in the ocean off Ensenada, Mexico.
