Offered Film Role
Jenna
A Beijing film director has asked Jenna Bush, daughter of US President George W. Bush, to star in an anti-terrorism movie, a Hong Kong newspaper reported.
Director Long Zanxu has sent Jenna a letter offering her the part of heroine Nancy Lee in a 100-million-yuan (12.06-million-dollar) production called "Hero Defending Country", the South China Morning Post reported.
In the movie, Lee battles with terrorists on planes and trains in a bid to beat the bad guys and improve Sino-US relations.
Long said the small budget restricted him from hiring Hollywood stars like action movie hero Harrison Ford.
However, he believed the political nature of the film would suit Jenna Bush and hoped that she would accept a low-paid contract as she was not a movie star.
"I intend to console the victims of this terrorist accident with my film," the Post quoted the letter to Bush as reading in English.
"And if you, Jenna, the daughter of the USA President, could play the role in this film developed by China and America, how much would it set the hearts of the people aflame.
"In the near future, billions of film fans will praise you for your excellent playing in our film after they speak highly of your father's heroic struggle," the letter added.
Filming was due to begin in the spring of 2002 and would be done mainly in China, the report said.
This is Long's second invitation for Jenna to star in one of his productions. Last year, he invited her to take part in a love drama.
Long has made 10 television programmes but the terrorism piece would be his first film.

Last Night
Didn't see much TV tonight...went to Pasadena instead. Got to put some faces to screennames.
Had a great time.
Tonight, Monday, CBS is all fresh - 'King Of Queens', 'Ellen',
'Raymond', 'Yes, Dear', and 'The Practice'.
NBC has a fresh 'Weakest Link', where the humiliation factor is cranked up a
bit by making the contestants wear holiday costumes. It is followed by part 2 of 'Titanic'.
ABC's MNF' has St. Louis visiting the Saints in New Orleans, and, depending on your time
zone, an episode of 'Regis' with some more celebrities.
TheWB has reruns of '7th Heaven' and 'Angel'.
Faux has 'Santa Baby!', holiday froth about a songwriter, followed by a repeat of 'Ally McBeal'.
TCM has 2 of the earlier Marx Brothers films, 'Animal Crackers' and 'Monkey Business'.
Anyone have any opinions?
Or reviews?

Her 'Touchstone'
rosie o'donnell
Catastrophic events, such as those of Sept. 11, can change people's perceptions. Before terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center and attacked the Pentagon, Rosie O'Donnell would regularly blast President Bush and his conservative agenda.
But these days, the talk-show host is admitting just how much she likes the President. "This man, whom I did not vote for, who six months ago annoyed me on a daily basis, has become my touchstone," O'Donnell writes in the January issue of her magazine, Rosie. "What is happening to me? He has made me feel a little bit safer, a little less worried, with one overused saying, 'Make no mistake, we will prevail.'"

Advertising Difficulties
''Puppetry of the Penis''
The theatrical duo of ''Puppetry of the Penis'' are up against formidable obstacles when it comes to advertising and publicizing their Off-Broadway show, just granted an indefinite run.
The Yellow Pages and Modern Bride magazine refuse to run the ad unless the word "penis" is removed, while "Today" - which featured a segment on nakednews.com and an entire show devoted to Katie Couric's colonoscopy - turned them down over "content." "The View" also passed on the pair, although it featured Ron Jeremy discussing his sordid career as a porn star.

They may call him the disappearing vice president, but Dick Cheney was much in evidence at home in the Naval Observatory last week. He and his wife, Lynne, tossed a private Christmas party for those near and dear to them.
To the strains of a Marine band, guests circulated in the newly decorated quarters assigned to America's No. 2 couple. On hand were Ken Starr, late of the Clinton investigations; Bruce Cole, the new chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities (this is a pet project of Lynne Cheney's); Anne Radice, the former NEA head under Bush the Elder and now director of Rabbi Schneier's Appeal of Conscience Foundation; Mort Kondracke of Roll Call; Brit Hume of Fox News Channel; the controversial Christian journalist Cal Thomas of the L.A. Times and WOCA NewsTalk radio; Ben Wattenberg of the Jewish World Review; Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and archaeologist Iris Love, who shares a love of dachshunds with Mrs. Cheney. Although a helicopter whisked away the Veep, the hostess remained with her guests for the entire party. There was a Christmas tree, a menorah, great food, many ornaments, cookies in the shape of the official residence. The latter recently appeared in all its glory in Architectural Digest.

Not Re-Signing With Virgin Records
David Bowie
David Bowie has taken the unorthodox step of refusing to re-sign with his record company, Virgin.
The London-born singer, considered to be one of the most influential musicians in popular music, has decided
instead to create his own small, independent label.
The announcement was made on David Bowie's website.
All future recordings, including a new album he is recording with long-time collaborator Tony Visconti,
will be released on ISO, his new label.
Bowie said he had tired of the bureaucracy and management structure of large record companies.
His decision to part company with Virgin will not surprise many fans, given his penchant for changing direction.

Conte Candoli
Trumpet player Conte Candoli, a staple of "The Tonight Show" band during Johnny Carson's era, has died. He was 74.
He died Friday of cancer at Monterey Palms Convalescent Home.
Candoli became recognized for developing a musical style based on Dizzy Gillespie's bebop playing, with a touch of Miles Davis and Clifford Brown.
The Indiana-born Candoli, grew up surrounded by musical instruments and influences. His father, a factory worker, played the trumpet and wanted Candoli and his brother Pete, also a trumpeter, to become musicians.
At 16, he worked in Woody Herman's orchestra during summer vacations.
While playing in California, Candoli began his association with the then New York-based "Tonight Show." In 1972, when Carson moved the show to Burbank, Candoli joined the band. He left when Carson retired in 1992. Candoli is survived by his brother.

Bianca Halstead
Bianca Halstead, the lead singer of the rock band Betty Blowtorch, died Saturday while riding in a speeding Corvette that went out of control on Interstate 10 near New Orleans.
The 36-year-old singer died about 5:30 a.m., hours after her Los Angeles-based band finished a show at a downtown music club.
The band has had national exposure, including an appearance in the film Bubble Boy last summer.
State police identified the driver of the Corvette as William McAllister, 33, of Burbank, Ill.
Witnesses estimated McAllister's speed at more than 100 mph, and he apparently had been drinking, said Trooper Todd Marchand.
The wreck occurred after McAllister changed lanes and sideswiped another car. McAllister's car then went out of control, skipping across a grassy median and into oncoming traffic. A car driven by Robert Fenkel, 50, of Colorado Springs, Colo., broadsided the Corvette, nearly shearing it in half, police said.
Fenkel had to be hospitalized but his injuries were not described as life threatening. Jacquelyn Hampton, 35, of Kenner, was driving the first car McAllister hit, but was not injured.
Charges against McAllister were pending as police continued their investigation, Marchand said.
