Hollywood Free Clinic Fund Raiser

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. may have found something better than rehab to keep him off drugs — a new girlfriend. For a couple of months, Downey has been dating Kristy Bauer-Jordan, a former fashion PR lady. His friends couldn't be happier.

Next week, Downey will be the host at his own benefit for the Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic. On tap to perform is his buddy Elton John (who did a terrific hour-long set at the China Club the other day for 100 WPLJ listeners).

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Had company for dinner, so missed a big chunk o'TV.

Tonight, Monday, we're pretty much back to all fresh TV. (!)

The CBS 2 hour block of sitcoms ('King Of Queens', 'The Ellen Show' [apparently replacing 'Yes, Dear'], 'Raymond', and 'Becker') are all new, followed by a fresh 'Family Law'.

NBC has 'Weakest Link', 'Third Watch', and 'Crossing Jordan', all fresh.

MNF on ABC is the Colts visiting the Dolphins, and, depending where you live, a fresh 'Regis' (more 'celebrities'), either before or after MNF.

The WB has new episodes of '7th Heaven' & 'Angel'.

Over on Faux, both 'Boston Public' and 'Ally McBeal' are fresh, too.

On AMC, the Alfred Hitchcock classic 'The Birds' airs. (Look for Alfred toward the beginning of the film, as Tippi leaves the bird store).

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

The Snarky Gossip Is Beginning

Liza, With A ''Z''

Liza Minnelli's friends are worried. After her hip, voice, drug and weight problems, all of them want Liza to be happy at last. But privately, they wonder if her proposed fourth marriage to a man she's known for about three months will do it.

Minnelli, 55, is due to wed David Gest, 48, in February. Gest was the producer who engineered Michael Jackson's September extravaganza at Madison Square Garden, where he and Minnelli met.

"The whole situation is a complete joke," one who truly loves the singer tells us. "When you have Liz Taylor as your maid of honor and Michael Jackson giving you away and Whitney Houston singing, you have to ask, 'What planet are we on?' The wedding seems to be more about Liza needing to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael and Liz and Whitney. She wants a comeback."

Some of Minnelli's friends have their doubts. The National Enquirer quotes one who claims that, though Gest is obsessed with looking young, he "has a history of attaching himself to older women. He's forever courting old-time actresses like Jane Russell, Debbie Reynolds, Ann Blyth, Patricia Neal, Esther Williams and Janet Leigh."

In fairness, he worked with those actresses on an event that paid tribute to Hollywood legends.

A rep for Liza didn't return a call. Neither did Gest, who, by the way, owns a collection of Shirley Temple memorabilia.

From The Producers Of ''Law & Order''

3 Dramas For CBS

In a major coup, CBS is working with the top producers of NBC's three ``Law & Order'' series to create a trio of drama series for its 2002-03 lineup.

Should all three projects from Neal Baer, Rene Balcer and Barry Schindel end up on CBS' fall schedule, ``Law & Order'' producer Studios USA and creator Dick Wolf would have to find new showrunners. However, since networks usually end up ordering only 10% to 20% of their pilots to series, it's unlikely such a scenario will play out.

With all these projects in the works, Studios USA and Wolf have already begun lining up backup producers. What's more, the ``Law & Order'' franchise has survived a slew of cast and producer changes over the years, yet is currently more successful than ever. And Wolf recently inked a new long-term deal with USA.

Studios USA president David Kissinger said it's not surprising all three of Wolf's showrunners would end up with development in the same season.

``Each one of these producers has done an extraordinary job on their 'Law & Order' show,'' he said. ``We are fiercely protective of the ongoing need to preserve the quality of the 'Law & Order' franchise. However, we also recognize that talented writers have unquenchable ambitions of their own, and each of these projects represents an exciting opportunity not only for them, but for the studio.''

'Playing For Peace'

Paul McCartney

Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney said on Sunday he would ``play for peace'' in Oslo this week at a concert to mark the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize.

McCartney has been mourning the death of fellow Beatle George Harrison who died on November 30 at the age of 58 after battling cancer.

McCartney will perform songs from his new album, ``Driving Rain,'' at the concert in Oslo on Tuesday to honor this year's Peace Prize recipients and celebrate the prize's centenary.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the United Nations -- joint winners of the 2001 Peace Prize -- were due to receive the award at a ceremony in Oslo on Monday.

Other artists performing at the concert will be Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean, R&B singer Anastacia, Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia, U.S. band Destiny's Child, UK opera singer Russell Watson and a choir of 50 children from around the world.

Uh-Oh....Another Bit Of Snarky Gossip

Liza Minnelli

Liza Minnelli is brushing up on Catholicism just in time for her marriage to music promoter David Gest. The stage and screen legend has been taking catechism classes every Wednesday at St. Patrick's Cathedral with Fr. Gregory Mustaciulo, an aide to John Cardinal Egan.

Not only is Liza walking down the aisle, but her good friend Michael Jackson will be Gest's best man (Jackson was also best man at Liz Taylor's doomed marriage to Larry Fortensky).

Skeletal songbird Whitney Houston - who, according to Star magazine, was recently attacked by her drug dealer - will belt out "Here Comes the Bride."

Gest, 48, is a pretty quirky character himself. An entire section of his Upper West Side condo is devoted to his extensive Shirley Temple memorabilia collection, reports the Enquirer.

Elsewhere in the story, which seems to do everything but wink and nudge regarding Gest's manliness, the tab quotes a source as saying, "He's forever courting old-time actresses like Jane Russell, Debbie Reynolds, Ann Blyth, Patricia Neal, Esther Williams and Janet Leigh."

But whatever his previous preferences in women, our sources say he's all man when it comes to his lust for Liza.

Gest apparently spends so much time in bed with Minnelli, 55, that he often doesn't bother getting dressed. As The Post's Braden Keil reported in May, Gest likes to walk around his Upper West Side building in a bathrobe and hospital slippers, and has been described by neighbors as a "germaphobe." Howard Stern, Regis Philbin and Liam Neeson also live in Gest's condo tower on West 67th Street.

Hitting It On The Head, Perfectly

Re: Walt Disney's Centennial

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

What ironic timing for .... appreciation of Walt Disney, just as the company that visionary founded is sinking deeper into creative oblivion....

Sure, Walt would be delighted to know that today's Disney has lots of money. But it has none of his passion--it lost the last vestiges of that when Frank Wells died and Jeffrey Katzenberg was fired. It bears no resemblance to anything Walt created. Imagine Michael Eisner or another Disney executive taking a pay cut or holding off on a check or two in order to maintain high standards.

Instead, Disney's theme parks have cut back on staff; reduced hours; installed shoddy, off-the-rack rides; and cut costs at every corner to ensure that the company's executives make their bonuses. (They've all but forgotten about actual customers.)

Today's Disney produces "Out Cold," "Meet the Deedles" and the extravagantly overpriced and underimagined "Pearl Harbor" instead of creating truly innovative family entertainment. To top it all off, it pays $130 million for the rights for its network to air "Harry Potter"--a classically Disneyesque family film made by a rival.

Earlier this year, the Walt Disney Co. laid off thousands of workers to keep profits up. If Walt were 100, he wouldn't be proud of the company he created; he'd be embarrassed. If only his ideals, dreams and ethics survived along with the memory his own company so sadly exploits.

XXXXX XXXXXXX
Studio City

It's within my working career that Disney was a great place to work. Sadly, it's far from that now. At one time, it was possible to support a family while working at Disneyland! Seriously, and still be able to have kids and buy a house. Seems pathetically laughable by today's standards.

Not that many years ago, Disneyland employed hundreds of live (union) musicians....they employ fewer than a dozen now.

Hell, when Walt was alive, the streets of Disneyland were literally steam-cleaned every night, and every light bulb on Main Street was changed.

Having spent the better part of a decade at the Disney Channel, I know it wasn't a perfect place, but, damn - it's sad to watch a Cadillac become something that looks up to a Yugo.

Uh-Oh....Sides Are Being Taken

'Bing' Laden & 'The Bitch'

Liz Hurley & Steve Bing

The image-conscious folk at Estée Lauder are very happy with their decision earlier this year to reduce the role of Elizabeth Hurley as company role model, now that she's embroiled in a paternity scandal.

Bing, meanwhile, has been telling Hollywood chums that he always felt uneasy about Hurley's ongoing relationship with Grant. He maybe thinks the zany couple conceived the baby and decided he was the ideal fellow to name as the father.

Bing, whose L.A. home is now under siege from reporters and TV crews, has just hired himself a p.r. firm to combat what he sees as the Hurley publicity assault on him. (Her friends are referring to him as "Bing Laden," while he calls her "The Bitch.")

This affair has all the trappings of a great scandal, and the supermarket tabloids, plus the Fleet Street rags, are in full cry. This is not the kind of publicity a wholesome company like Estée Lauder is looking for.

Breaking His Silence

Christopher Tolkien's Statement

Breaking his silence over the film ``The Lord Of The Rings,'' the son of fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien says he is not critical of the way film has interpreted his father's classic books.

In a statement issued Friday, Tolkien said while he had doubts about the viability of the projects, these were personal opinions.

Tolkien said his position is that ``The Lord Of The Rings'' is unsuitable for transformation into visual dramatic form.

``On the other hand, I recognize that this is a debatable and complex question of art, and the suggestions that have been made that I `disapprove' of the films, whatever their cinematic quality, even to the extent of thinking ill of those with whom I may differ, are wholly without foundation,'' he said.

J.R.R. Tolkien sold the film rights to his fantasy books in 1969, leaving his family and those in charge of his estate with no control over the movies.

BartCop Astrology

The official BartCop Astrologer, Geneva, has provided another eye-opening set of charts!

A brief excerpt: " In January 2002, New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani will intimately know an experience and feeling that more and more of us are reluctantly facing: He'll join the ranks of the unemployed. Due to term limits Giuliani has not been able to seek re-election, after 8 years as one of New York's more popular mayors.

The question on most New Yorker's minds and lips is "What is Rudy going to do NOW?" Well, maybe The Stars can give us some clues. "

What's Up With This?

Regis

More bad news for Regis Philbin. On the heels of reports that he's in danger of losing his "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" gig, Philbin is fading in Atlantic City as well.

The hard-working charmer is doing three shows this weekend at Resorts Hotel & Casino. Usually his appearances are sellouts. But Philbin fans at Da Tommaso said when they called to make reservations for last night's show, they were told there were plenty of seats available. And when called Friday afternoon, there were plenty of tickets left for Friday night.

More ''Lord Of The Rings''

Elijah Wood

LOTR Poster, With Elijah Wood

Young American actor Elijah Wood is almost lost for words when he describes the experience of filming the three ``Lord of the Rings'' movies back to back in New Zealand.

``Madness, absolute madness,'' he said, shaking his head in disbelief, as he faced journalists in London ahead of Monday's world premiere of ``Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.''

Now 20, Wood had only just turned 18 when he landed what many would consider the role of a lifetime -- that of the hobbit Frodo Baggins in director Peter Jackson's ambitious big-screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novels set in the mythical realm of Middle Earth.

Wood's slight frame and blue-eyed, innocent looks seemed to make him a perfect candidate to play the child-like, diminutive hobbit, one of Tolkien's imaginary race of small folk who live underground.

``I was very passionate about being a part of it,'' he said.

``I decided I should do something special so I got into costume, jumped into the woods and filmed some scenes.

``There was added pressure because I knew they were looking for an English actor so I felt like if I went the extra mile it might have a bit of influence.''

His initiative and passion paid off when Jackson cast him in the leading role.

``I was basically being asked to go on an adventure, go and live in New Zealand for a year and a half at a very significant time in my life. I was very excited about that -- and nervous and scared and all those things.''

Wood said he was struck by how real the character of Frodo became for him once filming began, a feeling that has been heightened by seeing the ``incredible'' end result on screen.

``Once I had on my prosthetic ears and feet for the first time, I knew what it was to feel like a hobbit.''

President Bush has asked all radio stations to play ``The Star-Spangled Banner'' Tuesday to mark the three-month anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

National Assn. of Broadcasters president-CEO Edward Fritts relayed the message on Friday, saying the president wants the stations to play the national anthem at 8:46 a.m. EST -- the exact time when the first jet hit the north tower of the World Trade Center -- or at a time deemed appropriate.

President Bush is also asking other countries around the world to play their respective national anthems in honor of the three-month mark. He will lead the worldwide initiative with the playing of ``The Star-Spangled Banner'' at the White House.

In Memory

Pauline Moore

Pauline Moore In 1938

Actress Pauline Moore, who starred in 25 films between 1937 and 1941, has died of Lou Gehrig's disease, her daughter said. She was 87.

Moore, both Charlie Chan's sidekick and Roy Rogers' leading lady, died of the fatal neuromuscular disease on Friday, said daughter Wendy Geagan.

Moore played teacher Ella in "Heidi" in 1937, Lady Constance in "The Three Musketeers" in 1939 and the psychic Eve Cairo in "Charlie Chan at Treasure Island" in 1939.

She also had a cameo role as Ann Rutledge in the 1939 movie "Young Mr. Lincoln" and played the heroine, Miss Sally, in the twelve-episode cliffhanger 1941 serial "King of the Texas Rangers" with "Slingin' Sammy" Baugh, her daughter said.

From 1956 through 1959, after a 15-year hiatus to raise a family and pursue other interests, Moore appeared in TV shows including "Death Valley Days" and "Four-Star Playhouse."

As a young actress, Moore appeared in films starring Henry Fonda, David Niven, Loretta Young, Joel McCrea, Shirley Temple, Tyrone Power, Don Ameche and Caesar Romero.

Born in Harrisburg, Pa., she began her acting career with the Edna Preston stock company. By 1932, Moore was in New York appearing in Florenz Ziegfeld's last show, "Ha Cha."

She also worked as a model, appearing on the covers of Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan and McCall's. Moore was also in the "Hostess Girl" painting on a 1934 Coca-Cola tray now considered highly collectible, Geagan said.

Moore worked under contract at 20th Century Fox and at Republic Studios for several years.

She also was an inspirational speaker and writer known for devotional poetry, short stories and religious plays, her daughter said.

Moore spent most of her adult life in Santa Monica, Calif. She was married to artist-cartoonist Jefferson Machamer from 1934 until his death in 1960. In 1962, she married minister Dodd Watkins, who died in 1972.
