Eric Clapton In AZ

by Lori

Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton
John Villani of the 'Arizona Republic' titled his review of last night's Eric
Clapton concert "Clapton Lost Power In More Ways Than One", and he didn't give
this concert very high marks. I have to disagree with him on a number of points.

Steve and I loved the concert. Clapton did start the concert relatively low key
sitting down and switching different acoustic guitars to suit the range of tunes
he played - moving from folk/blues on nylon string acoustic guitar to a Les Paul
type jazz guitar to a steel string acoustic guitar for several more very bluesy
turnes and a mellow arrangement of If I Saw you in Heaven. I thought the
virtuousity was masterful and a welcome shift from what I considered a very noisy
and heavy bass electric guitar opening act by Doyle Dramhall II and Smokestack
(who the AZ Republic reviewer seemed to love - yuck).

After these first five or six acoustic guitar tunes sitting down, Clapton stood
up and strapped on his plugged in electric Fender Stratocaster and intensified
the music selections and arrangements. Yes, the crowd loved the intensity which
was accompanied by a masterful light show and very interesting visual backdrop.
(I could spend some time talking about the visual effects of that backdrop - but
will just say now that I loved it).

The rest of the solid two hour show was filled with a variety of musical numbers
that spanned several generations of music and included songs from his time with
earlier groups like Cream. There was of course a heavy emphasis on blues of
various styles including a wonderful rendition of Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Koochie
Man" (this was one of the few instances where I agreed with Villani's review).

The audience was a mixture of many generations of people (just as the music
spanned a number of generations of style). This seemed to me to be a testament
to Clapton's adaptibility, virtuousity, and longevity by changing with the times
but always remaining one of the best, if not the best guitarist on the music
scene in the last 30+ years.

The encore numbers went from a rip-roaring performance by Billy Preston, to
Clapton again sitting down to play some very beautiful acoustic jazz. I was
struck by the 40's feel of the jazz when he started in on a very cool rendition
of Somewhere over the Rainbow. While it seemed an unusual number, it was
beautifully done and seemed a fitting conclusion to the show.

I could say more, but suffice to say I loved the show.

More Musings From The ShadowCatcher

The ShadowCatcher
United We Stand Divided We Fall

This morning I got to thinking and that usually gets me into trouble, thinking
about 'Individuation', and how we strive to be different from the rest, to think
different, to act different, to look different, after all we are different,
aren't we? And to be a leader, now who wants to be a simple-minded follower, just
another sheep in the flock?.

But in the aftermath of "self-will run riot", gives pause,~~have I painted myself
into a corner, am I looking down my nose at others? What makes me think that I am
so unique? There is nothing so 'belittling', as personality, nothing will
diminish my soul in its strength than too much concentration on my own selfish
personal affairs and just forgetting the welfare of others.~~~~

Nature will not tolerate for long, persistent self-perferment to the detriment
of others; for the very fabric and structure of the universe is cooperation,
spiritual union; and the human being who seeks self-perferment unremittingly,
without any surcrease, ends up in that far-distant country of the 'isolated',
the land of tired forgotten hopes, the land of spiritual decay; for Nature will
have none of me for long, for I have set my puny undeveloped will against the
mighty currents of the cosmos, and sooner or later will be washed up onto some
sandbank of the river of life, and there decay.~~~~~

Nature will-not tolerate persistent and inverterate selfishness. But how noble it
is, how grand it is, for men & women to feel our common kinship with each other,
to feel love stirring in the heart, to sense the feeling of our common
Brother/Sister-hood, and live to the benifit of all mankind.~~~~

Now these lofty thoughts can be translated into everyday life, how good it feels
to lift a few beers with my peers, but how bad it feels to wake up with a hangover
in a small dingy hotel room all alone.~~~~~ah shit!

				Regards

From 'Bucky'

The Further Adventures of Shrubius

"The Taking of the Empire, One...."

"The Taking of the Empire, One...."

When we last met Shrubius, the emperor, he had managed a minor triumph, no
thanks to himself.

Shrubius enjoyed the laurels tossed to him by his lapdog scribes. The scribes
went to the public forum each Sunday morning and said, "Our Fearless Leader,
Shrubius, is not to be underestimated!"

"It would be impossible," whispered the lackadaisical public, while worrying
that their aqueducts were going dry, and their sundials ceased to work.

In the halls of the Senate and of the plebeian assembly, it seemed that
Shrubius and his cohorts had won the day.

Minions worked diligently to transfer gold from some people to others...it
would be called "welfare," except the transfer was from the poor to the wealthy,
and therefore it was called "justice."

    This is soon to end.....

One Senator, a man of deep roots in a far northern province, and an ally of
Shrubius, began to feel uneasy.

He met with the emperor's henchmen. They chastised him for his unease, and
threatened to remove all the bread and circuses from his province.

And the Senator, Jefordus, cried, "But what of your promises? What of all the
things you said when trying to woo the people?"

At this, they laughed. Everyone knew the difference between a promise and a
promise! It all depended on what you promised to whom!

Jefordus, despite his allegiances, and his roots, grew more concerned.

And then Shrubius announced a plan...he would place a canopy over the entire
empire, through which no catapulted missile could penetrate!

It would take food from the mouths of babes, and medicines from the sick, but
the empire would be safe from rogue catapults, and the projectiles thereof.

And in the pristine waters of the life-giving river, they would dump sewage.
And in the pristine air above the empire, they would pump smoke. And in the
pristine forests, they would fell trees. And the aqueducts would be full, and the
sundials would run on time.

Jefordus could take it nor more.

He went to Shrubius and yanked up his toga...a wedgie of epic proportions!

And then he gave the Senate to the enemies of Shrubius...and the people
cheered.

 The End.

Hendrix's Boyhood Home for Sale on eBay

Jimi 1
Jimi Hendrix

A piece of the Jimi Hendrix experience was drawing brisk bidding on Thursday at
eBay Inc.'s auction Web site, eBay, where one
of the late rock legend's boyhood homes went on sale this week.

The top bid for the 900-square-foot, two-bedroom house on Thursday reached
$26,100, which would be a steal in Seattle's red-hot real estate market, except
that the buyer will have to move it to make way for condominiums, the eBay
listing said.

The musician's father, Al Hendrix, bought the house in 1953, where Jimi was 10
years old, and the future rock star lived there, along with his brother Leon, for
a few years, the seller says, citing Al Hendrix's book, ``My Son Jimi,'' and a
copy of the original deed.

VCR ALERT!

Nightline - Friday, 17 August, 2001

mr. armstrong
"Nightline" will air shocking, never-before-heard tapes of jazz great Louis
Armstrong expressing his anger over racism - and much, much more - on tomorrow's
show (11:35 p.m.).

The tapes, uncovered by Chicago Tribune arts critic Howard Reich, are more of an
audio diary Armstrong kept from the 1940s until his death in 1971. In the tapes,
which include conversations with friends, Armstrong plays against his upbeat,
smiling public image - revealing a man who felt angry over the way he was treated
by the music and film industry.

Dave Marash interviews Reich, George Avakian (Armstrong's former record producer),
Michael Cogswell (director of the Armstrong archives) and Armstrong friend Selma
Herlado.

Simpson's Update

simpsons
Executive Producer Al Jean told the Cinescape Web site that "The Simpsons,"
coming up on its 13th season, will definitely allow Homer and Bart to let their
hair down.

"In one episode, Jane Kaczmarek of 'Malcolm in the Middle' plays a judge who
punishes Bart by shackling him to Homer," Jean said.

"In another, Homer gets his jaw wired shut and it makes him into a really decent,
wonderful human being.

Then "there's a show where Homer gets addicted to medicinal marijuana, and one
where Bart creates an Internet cartoon based on Homer, who becomes a laughingstock
all over the world.

"And we have a show where Marge finds out that the sugar producers are trying to
illegally pump sugar into all the Springfield food, and it's like 'Erin
Brockovich.'"

Jean said Halloween will feature a special episode in which the Simpsons get a
computer to run all of their home appliances.

"The computer develops a crush on Marge and wants to kill Homer. In the same
episode, there's a Harry Potter satire timed to the movie," he said.

UPN's 'Manhunt' - Rigged?

UPN's new "reality" series Manhunt is facing scathing new charges of manipulation-
-from one of the people who created it.

Manhunt, which debuted August 3 on UPN, sent 13 contestants on a six-day journey
through Kauai while being chased by paintball gun-wielding "hunters." But in a
new round of claims unearthed by investigative reporter Peter Lance, co-executive
producer Bob Jaffe says he quit the show after Paramount TV executives allegedly
asked him to rig two challenges, change the rules and reshoot new scenes--complete
with scripts--in a Los Angeles park.

One former contestant also claims participants were told they wouldn't receive
any cash prizes if they didn't play along and shoot the new scenes.

Jaffe, a 20-year reality show veteran and former creator of American Gladiators,
says he quit the show in March, after battling with executive producer Chris
Crowe, Paramount TV chief Kerry McCluggage and UPN chief Dean Valentine over
concerns that footage he shot in Kauai didn't have enough conflict. The reshoots
allegedly went on without him, he says, and new scenes were filmed not in Hawaii,
but in L.A.'s Griffith Park and outside an editing suite in North Hollywood.

"They brought in palm trees to make it look like they were in the jungle," Jaffe
tells E! Online. "My relationship ended in mid-March, and it had just reached a
point where they wanted me to do a number of things I didn't want to do. They wanted
to make it into a fictitious representation of what might have occurred."

Paramount vehemently denied the charges in a statement Wednesday, saying "UPN and
Paramount have not supported and would not support persons or practices designed
to manipulate the outcome of the show." One Paramount Television source contends
that Jaffe was actually fired, and that the claims were simply the byproduct of
a disgruntled employee.

BREMERTON
Keyless mystery returns
By Angela D. Smith Sun Staff

The failure of keyless entry devices is more limited this time.
Bremerton residents and businesses once again reported a mysterious failure of
vehicles' keyless entry devices for several hours Thursday afternoon.

The problem is similar to a more widespread phenomenon that occurred March 21-26.
But this time only certain types of devices were affected, and the outages lasted
just a few hours.

In March, the keyless entry failures began at the same time the aircraft carrier
USS Carl Vinson returned to Bremerton. Thursday, the outages began one day after
the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Navy officials again denied any relationship between the outage and any ships at
PSNS, and had no further explanation for the occurrence.

But in an interview two weeks ago, a government official familiar with a Federal
Communications Commission probe into the outage said it was "very possible" that
the problem could be related to military presence in the area.

Margaret Mull of East Bremerton said when she tried to open her 1992 Buick Le
Sabre shortly after noon Thursday, her remote device was not working.

"Last time, I bought an extra remote for $80, and now neither of them are working,"
Mull said. "I'm lucky to have a key for mine."

She said her remote began working again at about 3 p.m.

While some auto dealers in Bremerton reported that they had no problems with the
cars on the lots, others reported that certain vehicles were not responding or
that there was a delay in response.

Bill Shelby of Heartland Toyota said that when he went to check on new cars in
the lot, the remotes would stop working for about 30 seconds, then work for 10
seconds. He said no customers had called to complain.

Mark George of West Hills Honda said one person had called to complain, and when
he went to check cars on the lot, he found that although the remote entry devices
for Honda Civics worked fine, none of the devices for the Honda Accords or
Passports was operational. They began working again about 4:30 p.m., he said.

An official from the Federal Communications Commission declined to comment on the
matter until investigation of the March incident was complete.

The actor told TV critics this summer that he left NYPD Blue because of family

character, detective Danny Sorensen, saying he didn't want to spoil Blue
creator Steven Bochco's surprise. He says he's still waiting for the right project since leaving the show.

Schroder also is happy about President George W. Bush, for whom he campaigned.
"I got to deposit a $600 refund check today from the IRS, and I told the cashier
that's thanks to President Bush."
