The Irish Postal Commission
Bono Stamps
Bono may soon arrive at your house by mail. The U2 rocker is among a group of musicians who will appear on
commemorative stamps in Ireland, starting next year.
The Irish postal service confirmed yesterday that the stamps, which also will feature Belfast-born singer Van
Morrison and guitarist Rory Gallagher, will celebrate the impact of Irish music on the world. And rock stars
are not the only faces that will appear. Soccer standouts like Manchester United captain Roy Keane will also be featured.

Interesting Quotes From
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
Hillary on New York: "I feel an overwhelming responsibility in representing New York. This city is viewed
as something that has everything and, thus, to much of the rest of the nation it's a place that can take care of itself."
On human cloning: "I'm afraid they'll clone Strom Thurmond and he'll be around forever."
On her own looks: "With my schedule, I needed a way that worked for me. It meant easy-does-it-hair and that
omnipresent black pants suit uniform which cut down on decisions and accessories, got me in and out of SUVs
gracefully, and went from breakfast meetings to dinner functions without dirtying, wrinkling or changing.
But I must say I miss color and texture. And I miss doing something different with my hair. But I now need
the time to do that."
Bill the Husband on our war: "We must win it because bin Laden is the worst symbol in the world today.
Secondly, we must establish defenses. Thirdly, we have to build back New York. The quicker New York
rebounds, the quicker America rebounds.
"There wasn't a sicker person than I on September 11. I was on the telephone when it happened. The instant
that second plane hit, I said to the person with whom I was speaking, 'Bin Laden did this.' I knew immediately.
I know what this network can do.
"But our country may be of good cheer. Nothing like this has ever defeated civilization. Terrorism never won
before and won't now."

''Saturday Night Live''
Ellen & Rudy
Rudy Giuliani makes his last appearance in his role of mayor on this week's ``Saturday Night Live.'' Ellen DeGeneres

Lorne Michaels will launch ``SNL's'' Colin Quinn as host of his own series from New York, starting March 4. And on
May 4, Michaels will executive produce a giant, live, three-hour NBC special celebrating the network's 75th anniversary.
The show ``will pay respects to entertainment, news and sports.'' It will emanate from Studio 8H, home to ``SNL.''
The studio has been a TV landmark since 1937 when a live premiere concert by the NBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by
Arturo Toscanini was broadcast from the studio.

There's a story below on how popular 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' has become -
it's generating phenomenal numbers - but, it's still not my cup of tea. Reminds me
of my college years and almost anything by 'Quinn Martin' productions.
Would have watched 'Harold & Maude' on AMC, but the TV in the kitchen is
'over-the-air-only'. Ruth Gordon wrote several books, all of them imteresting.
At one time, Bud Cort lived at Groucho's house.
Watching Liv Tyler on 'Dave'....she seems rather large for an elven maiden.
Tonight, Friday, CBS has a TV-movie 'The Christmas Secret', and then
'48 Hours'.
NBC has fresh episodes of 'Providence', 'Jane Pauley' & 'Law &
Order: Special Victims Unit', where a group of horny women supposedly sexually assault
a male stripper. (Bet it was written by a man...LOL)
And, 'Conan' has Al Franken scheduled.
ABC throws away the first hour with a repeat 'Funniest Videos', then a 'filler',
'Before They Were Stars!', and then a fresh 'Once & Again'.
The WB starts the night with the old Boris Karloff narrated 'Dr. Seuss' How
The Grinch Stole Christmas', then fresh episodes of 'Maybe It's Me', 'Reba',
and 'Raising Dad'.
Over at Faux, there is a fresh 'Dark Angel', and then the weekly repeat of '24'.
A & E devotes 2 hours to 'The Rat Pack'.
HBO 2 has the ever-campy 'Mommy Dearest'.
TCM (Turner Classic Movies) has 'Casablanca' on early, and for night owls/east coast early-
risers, there's the original Marlene Dietrich film, 'The Blue Angel'.

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Class Of 2001
New Inductees
The Ramones and the Talking Heads, two bands that helped define the punk sound, are among the artists inducted
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2002.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Isaac Hayes, Brenda Lee and Gene Pitney were also inducted. The announcement
was made Thursday by Suzan Evans, executive director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
The induction ceremony, scheduled for March 18, will take place almost a year after Joey Ramone, the Ramones'
lanky, leather-jacketed lead singer, died of lymphoma at age 49.
It's the first time the hall has honored members of the first punk rock generation, and voters pointedly snubbed
Britain's Sex Pistols in favor of two New York bands.
Guitarist Chet Atkins, who died in June, is this year's sideman inductee. Atkins' unusual finger-picking style
influenced generations of other guitarists.
The non-performer inductee is Jim Stewart, co-founder of Stax records. Sam and Dave and Otis Redding are among the
artists who performed on the independent music label.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is based in Cleveland.

''Sex Tips With Heidi Fleiss & Victoria Sellers''
New DVD
Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss will use a movie premiere to launch her DVD next Tuesday.
Fleiss has a reserved seat for director Ridley Scott's new war movie, "Black Hawk Down." Her live-in
boyfriend, actor Tom Sizemore, is one of the film's stars.
But you can bet she'll be talking about her unrated DVD, "Sex Tips With Heidi Fleiss and Victoria
Sellers." In the video, Fleiss and Sellers (daughter of the deceased comic legend
Peter Sellers) share advice on how to please a man. There's also a section titled "How to Be a First-Class Madam."

''The Girls In The Van''
Barry Kemp
Producer Barry Kemp ("Newhart," "Coach"), who's over at Paramount, has just inked a deal to option
"The Girls in the Van: Covering Hillary," for a possible series.
The show, based on the book by AP reporter Beth Harpaz, would be a sitcom encompassing a female
reporter chasing a generic female candidate. Harpaz's book, published by St. Martin's, chronicles
the life of reporters (including The Post's Gregg Birnbaum, Maggie Haberman and Bob Hardt) covering
Sen. Hillary Clinton's (ultimately successful) 2000 New York senatorial campaign. Harpaz's agent,
Jane Dystel, brokered the deal with Paramount.

Mann's Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood
''The Sound Is Ghastly''
Frank Darabont, director of ``The Majestic,'' came through loud and clear after his picture premiered at
Mann's Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood Tuesday.
``It never dawned on me the sound would be so tragically awful here,'' Darabont said. ``It's hollow, bass-y,
there's no high end. It sounds like you're playing it back in a concrete bunker. It's terrible. And I know we
have a fantastic mix. I love the theater, but the sound is ghastly.''
Darabont's remarks come in the wake of last week's ``Ocean's Eleven'' premiere being moved to Westwood's
Village theater, with a number of sources confirming a key reason for the switch was director Steven
Soderbergh's unhappiness with the Chinese sound system.
``The Majestic,'' a 1950s drama starring Jim Carrey, opens Dec. 21.

MAC's New Viva Glam IV Models
Elton & Shirley & Mary J.
He's hardly cover model material, but flamboyant pop legend Elton John will pucker up for charity
as the face of a new lipstick.
The British singer, never one to shy away from outrageous behavior, will help promote cosmetic
company MAC's new Viva Glam IV, the latest in a line of lipsticks sold to raise money for the
firm's AIDS fund, the company said Thursday.
John will be joined in the ad campaign by soul singer Mary J. Blige and Shirley Manson, lead
singer of the rock band Garbage, MAC said.
The fund-raising drive will launch in February with the launch of a ``closely guarded'' advertising
campaign by celebrity photographer David LaChapelle, it said.
The ``frosted rose and gold shimmer'' lipstick will hit British stores in April, with 100 percent
of its $16 retail price going directly to the MAC AIDS fund.

Just How Popular Is ``CSI: Crime Scene Investigation''?
Joins The 25 Million-Viewer Club
The 25 million-viewer club recently welcomed its newest member, but the induction ceremony for ``CSI: Crime
Scene Investigation'' may have been one of the quietest ever.
The second-year CBS drama is mounting the most serious challenge yet to NBC's long-running ``ER'' as the
country's No. 1 drama. And Thursday night, the two dramas butt heads with original episodes for the first time.
It's a confrontation that CBS execs are downplaying, but whatever happens, it's clear that ``CSI'' has
become one of primetime's big boys. Even NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker acknowledged it as a ``bona fide hit.''
The biggest scripted Thursday hit for CBS since ``Magnum, P.I.'' and ``Simon and Simon'' in the early 1980s,
``CSI'' has teamed with ``Survivor'' to make the network a player on a night that NBC had owned for years.
How big has ``CSI'' become after just 33 episodes?
Twice in the November sweep it drew more than 25 million viewers -- a level that ``Law & Order'' and ``The
Practice'' have never attained in their combined 18 seasons and that ``NYPD Blue '' hasn't seen in six years.
In fact, since 1996, only a handful of dramas have drawn 25 million viewers with regularly scheduled
episodes: ``ER,'' of course, has done it more than 100 times, but the only others are ``Touched by an
Angel'' (three times), ``The West Wing'' and ``The X-Files'' (once apiece).

for the real Clinton Show — on TV!
The week before Thanksgiving, Clinton was spotted at the most elegant restaurant in his current digs,
Chappaqua, N.Y., talking with Disney chief Michael Eisner about doing his own TV talk show, possibly as early as next year.
"Clinton was joined by Hillary, Eisner by his wife, and the group first had drinks in the tap room of
Crabtree's Kittle House Restaurant & Inn," said an eyewitness. "They then moved into a quiet back room for a gourmet dinner."
Another source disclosed: "Bill's been chomping at the bit to get back into the arena. He's very disappointed
that President Bush hasn't offered him some kind of role as an envoy.

NBC Breaking Longtime TV Taboo
Hard Liquor Ads
NBC is breaking a longtime television taboo by becoming the first broadcast network to run hard liquor commercials.
The first hint of the policy change will come this weekend, when a public service message promoting designated driving
sponsored by Smirnoff's vodka brand will appear during ``Saturday Night Live''
NBC agreed on a multimillion-dollar contract with Guinness UDV, maker of such brands as Baileys Irish Cream, Smirnoff's
vodka, Johnny Walker scotch, Jose Cuervo tequila and Tanqueray gin. Guinness UDV is the U.S. subsidiary of the London-based
Diageo, the world's largest liquor distributor.
NBC's decision to run liquor commercials comes in the midst of an economic downturn that has depressed the television advertising market.
NBC is requiring any hard liquor advertiser to run four months of public service messages about drinking before any product-plugging
gets on the air. After that, NBC said that for every four commercials it runs, a company must air one public service message.
The hard liquor spots are designed for programs that air after 9 p.m., but NBC said it will consider the commercials for other shows
that have an audience demographic of 85 percent aged 21 and older.
No active professional athletes may be used in the ads, nor any entertainment figure who appeals primarily to under-age fans, NBC said.
NBC To Sell Hard Liquor
The last 2 nights KNBC (Los Angeles) has been airing Trojan condom ads very late at night. Tuesday (OK, technically
Wednesday morning), it was during 'SCTV' which airs after 'Conan' Last night, it was during the 'Jay Leno'
week-old repeat that airs after 'SCTV'. Viewers were wished a 'Happy and Healthy New Year'.
Busted At Saks In Beverly Hills
Winona Ryder
Oscar-nominated actress Winona Ryder was arrested at Saks Fifth Avenue's Beverly Hills store when clerks
saw her cram nearly $5,000 worth of clothes and accessories into a bag after ripping off their security
tags, police said on Thursday.
When authorities were summoned they found Ryder with $4,760 worth of allegedly pilfered items and an unmarked
bottle with prescription drugs inside, he said. Gilmond said Ryder was described by arresting officers as
"very courteous, polite, friendly ... a true lady," Gilmond said.
Ryder's attorney, Mark Geragos, said during a press conference that the actress' arrest stemmed from a
"misunderstanding" and predicted that the charges against her would ultimately be dismissed.
Born in Winona, Minnesota, to hippie parents, Ryder's godfather was Timothy Leary. She spent her early years
living on a commune without electricity in the company of Leary and Beat poet Allen Ginsburg, also a family friend.
Her mother ran a makeshift movie theater in a nearby barn and would allow Ryder to skip school to watch movies.
She moved with her parents to San Francisco at age 10 where two years later she enrolled in acting classes.
She made her film debut in the David Seltzer high school coming of age flick "Lucas" in 1986 and played the
teenage bride of Jerry Lee Lewis in "Great Balls of Fire" in 1989.
Last August, Ryder checked into a hospital after suffering from severe stomach pains in her hotel room in London
where she was filming "Lily and the Secret Planting."
She was later diagnosed with a severe gastroenterological disorder and actress Kate Winslet was cast in her place. She
was said to have been heartbroken to leave the film.
Winona Ryder
Timothy Leary was also Uma Thurman's godfather.

To Perform For Queen Elizabeth II's 50th Jubilee
Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin will perform for Queen Elizabeth II at the British monarch's 50th Jubilee, it was announced Thursday.
Franklin, 60, a Detroit native, will perform four or five songs for 15,000 invited guests in the gardens
of Buckingham Palace on June 3, 2002, the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's ascension to the throne.
The event will be aired on BBC television and radio, and will be broadcast in the United States at a later date.
Franklin, the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has won 15 Grammy Awards, the
Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
She performed at former President Clinton's inauguration in 1993, and has given at least one Royal Command
Performance for Elizabeth II. Her voice has been designated a natural resource of the State of Michigan.

Film About ''The Red Elvis''
Dean Reed
Tom Hanks is in negotiations with DreamWorks to topline and produce the studio's project "Comrade Rockstar,"
based on the life of the late rocker Dean Reed.
Born in Denver in 1938, Reed moved to Hollywood at a young age and landed a recording contract with Capitol
Records by the time he was 20. However, he never rose to the kind of fame in the United States that he found
in other countries, prompting him to move to South America, where he became known as "the Red Elvis."
After several albums, movies and television appearances, Reed moved on to Rome and in 1966 toured the Soviet
Union, where he became a megastar. But he remained relatively obscure in his homeland. Along with his music
and acting career, Reed -- who starred in more than 20 films and TV shows -- was heavily involved in leftist
politics and became an active protester of the Vietnam War, which continually got him into trouble with the U.S. State Department.
His body was found in an East Berlin lake in 1986; it's not known whether his death was suicide or homicide.

De Niro To Produce ABC Sitcom
``Fully Committed''
Robert De Niro will help turn scribe Becky Mode's hit play ``Fully Committed'' into an ABC sitcom.
The project will be a sort of ``Upstairs, Downstairs'' behind-the-scenes look at a hip-and-happening Gotham
restaurant. The story will be told through the eyes of a struggling actor who gets a job at the establishment.
De Niro will serve as an executive producer, along with his Tribeca Films production partner Jane Rosenthal.
ABC has ordered a script, and is targeting the project for next fall.
Jay Roach, who directed De Niro in ``Meet the Parents,'' is attached to shoot the pilot, assuming he can find
time while shooting the latest ``Austin Powers'' picture. Mode will write the script. Both will also executive produce.

Poignant Farewell
George & Paul
Paul McCartney told on Thursday of his poignant farewell to George Harrison when he laughed, joked and held
the hand of his fellow Beatle.
``The best thing for me was seeing him for a couple of hours and laughing and joking and holding his hand,''
he said of their last meeting just two weeks before Harrison's death from cancer at the age of 58.
``Afterwards I realized I'd never, ever held his hand. We'd been to school together and got on buses together
and we didn't hold each other's hands,'' McCartney told BBC Radio.
``It was like a compensation. He was rubbing his thumb up and down my hand and it was very nice,'' he added.

Divorce News
Kate Winslet
The short-lived marriage of ``Titanic'' superstar Kate Winslet and her film director husband Jim Threapleton
ended Thursday with a ``quickie'' divorce in a British court.
The divorce petition brought by Winslet was uncontested and neither she nor Threapleton attended the brief
hearing. The pair, whose split shocked the show-business world, married in 1998 at a church near where
Winslet's family live in Reading, west of London.
Since the split, archetypal ``English Rose'' Winslet has been linked to ``American Beauty'' director Sam
Mendes -- with their affair plastered across British tabloids, who are asking gleefully if the couple could
be the next Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.

A&E's Remake of Orson Welles' ''The Magnificent Ambersons''
''12 Weeks Of Agony''
Actress Madeleine Stowe is slamming A&E's upcoming remake of Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons" -
describing the shoot as "12 weeks of agony."
"It was the best screenplay I have ever read. I was so thrilled to be part of this great project," Stowe
told a Canadian newspaper this week.
She blames director Alfonso Arau - who directed "Like Water for Chocolate" - for botching the much-anticipated TV movie.
"Arau didn't want to discuss his vision with the actors, nor did he want any input from any of us about our characters," Stowe said.
"All he wanted to talk about was incest. It was 12 weeks of agony. We had a chance to make cinema history
and, because of Arau, we botched it," the actress said.
A&E's "The Magnificent Ambersons," which premieres Jan. 12, is adapted from Welles' original screenplay for the movie, which was
released in 1942 and was his followup to "Citizen Kane."
